24. Career Day Chapter Three

Two more people watching the announcement and seeing the speeches from the outgoing and then the incoming Fleet Admiral.

Russell sitting in the hotel he booked into, in Paris near the Federation Presidents office.

Jeffrey sat at the desk alongside Russell, annoyed with himself for not being able to find Veloru last night, he wasn't at home or in the office nor in any place he was known to socialize.

The fact he hadn't even learned Kelvins name frustrated him, Velorus' assistant stubbornly refused to give him the name.

He didn't have time to find any leverage to use against him.

Once they heard Veloru say the name, both of them reached out to their contacts and Jeffrey got hold of Kelvins personnel file.

What there was of it, with a large part of his career spent in Starfleet Intelligence portions of it were redacted.

Leaving Russell still in the dark about him, about his character and whether Kelvin would be someone he could work with.

Several hours after the original broadcast it reached Federation outpost Deep Space Nine.

Still it wasn't until several day's later the other person who had that level of interest saw it.

Back on DS9 finally reunited with Jien, David sat alone in her quarters while she was on duty.

Colonel Kira told him about it right after formally accepting his request to return to serving there.

It took him a while to put it on knowing it was shot right outside Starfleet Headquarters where his mum died.

Although when he did all he saw thanks to the camera operator keeping it tight on Veloru and then Kelvin as they spoke were the edges of burn marks, either from the fires that engulfed the building or the torpedoes strikes on the wall behind where they stood.

He had been surprised to learn Kelvin had been, or soon would be officially the top man in Starfleet, not because he wasn't ambitious he just assumed he had made too many enemies for it to happen now or probably ever.

Except it was one of those enemies who had decided to hand him the keys to the kingdom. He certainly never saw that coming, it got him thinking of his mother, wondering if Kelvin would have promoted her.

Would he have wanted her being part of his inner circle, his advisors; he guessed Kelvin would at the very least offer her some kind of role.

Would she have took it, would Kelvins wife be at all thrilled to work with her knowing how close the two of them became even after  their relationship ended shortly before graduating the academy.

David was happy for Kelvin, he deserved something going good for him, but at the same time at the back of his mind lurked the fear Kelvin might decide to interfere with his career.

As he did when he got him the promotion and transfer at the outbreak of the war.

He figured Kelvin might have seen it, might still see it as helping someone he cares about and he knows Kelvin had good intentions, wanting only the best for someone he had known most of his life.

Right now though David knew he wanted at least for now to stay on DS9, it had been one of the favourite places he'd been assigned in his career.

Not just because of Jien, even before he met her he cared that Starfleet help Bajor get back on its feet and try and make up for what he saw as them ignoring the Cardassian occupation of their world.

Signing treaties all to make peace with monsters. He hoped the entire Alpha Quadrant now saw that every single Starfleet encounter with them had been a disaster.

After getting the humiliating smackdown they deserved maybe one day they'll be ready to start learning to play nice instead of trying to conquer the entire Alpha Quadrant, but he doubted it.

Sure he regretted millions of them being killed in the last few hours of the war, but as far as he could see they brought it all on themselves.

He'd gotten sidetracked thinking about the Cardy's and how much he despised them. He needed to focus, to contact Kelvin and congratulate him on the appointment, but also subtly hint how he wanted Kelvin to leave him where he was.

Back on Earth shortly after walking away from their announcement Veloru and Kelvin were stood outside the Starfleet Command offices that had been their meeting place since their original offices at headquarters took a direct hit in the Breen attack.

"You want me to just wait out here."

"Yes, Admiral Hudson I need to talk to them first and do it alone."

"You just don't want me to hear what dirt you have that will get them to go along with your nomination."

"I do not have dirt, as you so charmingly put it. I just have persuasive opinions."

"Yeah sure, opinions that's all you've got."

Veloru didn't say anything else he simply turned and walked away pausing just long enough for the doors to slide open and let him in.

Kelvin took a seat and in that moment wished he'd brought his padd with him, with no idea how long he could be sat there waiting he could have at least had something to read.

He never did get around to reading Moby Dick, but he'd kept it on his padd all this time since Captain Picard recommended he try it the last time they met.

Admiral's Sitak, Nechayhev, Ross, Chakote, Paris, Barthas, Ceriul, Xatba, Reega, Stanais and McCarthy all twelve members of Starfleet command were waiting for him.

Each one with a look of disapproval or annoyance on their faces as they watched him enter.
