Author's note

A work longer in the making than you could imagine. Ongoing on here since 2014, the idea and the desire to write it have been with me for a few years longer than that.

23. Career Day Chapter Four

"Excuse my manners Fleet Admiral, but just what the hell do you think you're playing at."

"Quitting without telling us by itself would be bad enough, but anointing Hudson as your successor is outrageous and I for one won't be giving him my seal of approval."

"You're right, you won't none of you will and I'll tell you why."

"Article 33, Subsection 14 of the Starfleet Charter, I'm sure you're familiar with it."

He looked at them seeing the confused looks on their faces.

"No, well then I'll fill you in."

"Article 33 is all about leadership of Starfleet, Subsection 14 states the outgoing head can name a successor of their choosing."

"Ok, you get to name a successor, yet I didn't hear you mention where it says anything about us having to give our stamp of approval to your choice."

"You're right Admiral McCarthy, largely because back then their was no command advisory council like the one sitting before me."

"Too often in the past the head of Starfleet picked and chose the rules they wanted to follow and policy was written and rewritten by each successive chief, even the job title has changed over the years."

"An interesting history lesson Fleet Admiral, but I fail to see the relevance." Admiral Alynna Nechayev said her tone dripping with condescension.

"Well let me fill you in on a late amendment to the charter which addresses that."

"Although Article 41 saw the inclusion of a command council for the first time it states that the previously mentioned Article 33 still stood thus giving the council no official position to deny that selection."

"Although I will concede that because of Article 41 selection of past candidates to fill my position where made in consultation with the command council of the time."

"I am choosing to forgo that in favour of being solely responsible for this choice, for better or worse."

"You'll have someone to blame, if anything you could look at it as me doing you a service."

The looks on their faces told him they didn't see it that way.

Anyway, thank you for selecting me, even if it was due to my not having been tainted by Admiral Leyton and his attempt to overthrow the reign of President Jaresh Inyo.

Thank you for belittling me on many occasions, too many to bring up now and does little for my reputation.

"I can freely admit I don't like you, a few of you I never liked so I hope I never have see any of you again as long as I live."

Veloru turned and walked out leaving them red faced with anger and embarrassment.

He came out to find Kelvin sitting where he'd left him only now his head was tilted back and his eyes were closed.

"Catching up on some sleep Fleet Admiral, probably a good idea."

"This job can become all consuming if you let it."

"I wasn't sleeping, just resting and thinking."

"What about?"

"The past, the future, my daughter."

"Every time I think about her I see her as a child, my newborn baby girl, a toddler, as a 4 till 10 year old. None of her older than that, no teenage years, not as the young woman she was when she..."

"Just her as the young girl who needed her daddy, when she fell and hurt herself or when she made something or drew a picture."

"When she got good grades in school or won an athletic event. Maybe its because we were closer then."

"Those years after were definitely when my career kept me away from my family."

"I missed some important moments and hurt both my children, Liz too. I can't stop wondering if my children joined because of me."

"The way I joined because of my grandparents and parents, did I do enough to let them make up their own minds about whether they really wanted to sign up with Starfleet."

"You're not having second thoughts about taking the job are you?"

"No, no absolutely not, not taking it won't undo the mistakes I made, but if I could, well I don't know."

"I guess I'm just thinking, hoping to use the job to ensure every officer wants to be in Starfleet to root out anyone who doesn't feel they belong."

"It doesn't matter really, whatever the reason behind this sudden downturn in my mood."

"I need you to know it won't dampen my enthusiasm for the job for the opportunity you're giving me to lead Starfleet into the future into a bright hopeful future."

"Glad to hear it. Now let's go make it official."

"Wait, what now. You did it you got Command to authorize my appointment so quickly."

"No, I the truth under Starfleet rules I don't need their approval for this."

"Ok, I don't under understand how that works, but if you say so."

"There is one problem they are not a forgiving group, they will be angry and are likely to take that anger out on you once you're in office."

"Why do you think they wouldn't come after you."

"I can assure you they aren't going to give me any problems, and if you listen to my advice they won't present any problems for you either."

"As soon as we've signed the documents, witnessed to prove I have relinquished authority and handed it to you of my free will."

"You are going to check out Subsection 5 of Article 41 which gives you the option to choose the who and how many members are on your advisory council."

"I recommend you deselect all the current members and put in place your own choices, people you trust."

"Whose views and opinions you respect, those who will hold you accountable, but not try to push their own agendas, nor coerce you into following theirs."

"In short nobody connected to my tenure."

"Ok, I will heed your advice, thank you."

"What's the matter Kelvin, you look worried, you needn't be, everything will go as smoothly I will be gone and all this will be yours."

"I'm not worried about all of this, I believe you that this will happen."

"I'm worried about you, why are you in such a rush to get away from here?" "Why are you down on your own service record?"

"Who are you going home to, is there anyone waiting for you to look out for you to make sure you don't slip further into the spiral of depression I think you're in."

"Oh you needn't worry about me, I'll be fine."

"The last time someone said that to me in the tone of voice you're saying it, they committed suicide a couple of days later."

"I have lived with not being aware enough to see that coming, a long time. I don't want to have your death on my conscience too."

"It wouldn't be on your conscience, besides once I get home I will be out of your reach."

"Still have no fear, I don't yet know what I will do for the rest of my life, just that I intend to live to old age."

"Good, glad to hear it."

"Right if you're done worrying about me let's get this done."

"What now?"

"Yes now."

"You can wait here while I go get Lt. Practan and one other to act as witness or wait in my office."

Kelvin was about to say he'd just wait back at Velorums office until he realised he wanted to go and get Elizabeth and Oliver, plus he thought it might be a good idea to have Federation news there to mark the occasion.

Part of the reason was his ego, but he also saw it as chance for transparency to let everyone see this hand over when nothing like this had ever been filmed before.

More important than that for him personally was Liz and Ollie being there.

"Actually if you don't mind I'd like to go get my wife and son to have them there with me. Plus I think I would like to replicate a new uniform for the occasion."

"Very well, we'll meet at my office in three hours. Veloru answered as he turned and walked away."
