11. The Last Heartbeat
They all woke early to head to the hospital. Their faces were puffy and red from crying. They rushed into Ashton's car and headed to the hospital and arrived at 7:45. They didn't even stop at reception they ran straight to the elevator and took it to the emergency floor. They ran to lukes room and a nurse informed them that he was in the middle of surgery on floor 3 room 167 and that they should wait in the surgery waiting room next to him.
We went up to floor 3, the surgery floor. Before we went to the waiting room we walked past room 167 and tried to peep through the high windows but even when I got on michaels shoulders we couldn't see in. All I could here was "can you pass me the-" and people rushing around. We sat down in the waiting room and I sat next to an old woman. "Why are you here?" She asked. "My friend is having brain surgery" I replied. "My names Belarna by the way" "what a lovely name, I am Catherine and my husband is having a heart transplant but it should be over in 10 mins" she said. It seemed we talked for hours in those 10 mins she was waiting. I didn't even pay attention to the boys. "Belarna, I need some comfort. Please when I get called in, come with me" Catherine asked. "Of course Catherine" I replied. I already felt that we were family.
A doctor came in and me and the boys looked nervous. "Catherine?" He asked and the boys sat back down. Catherine looked nervous as I held her hand. She was about 65 but her husband is 70. We walked into the room to see an old man in the bed. She sat next to him as the doctor flicked on the switch off the heart monitor. It started beating. He was alive. I was so excited and happy that he had survived and Catherine was happy too. I hoped we had the same luck with Luke. "Wait girls. We have to monitor it for 5mins because the body might react and cause him to have a heart attack. Catherine's face went from happy to the most glum worried expression I have seen. She came and sat next to me.
After 4 mins we were getting our hopes up. The heart was still beating fast and the monitor would beep every time. Soon after one minute get could safely wake him up and Catherine and her husband would be happy.
The monitor buzzed with a straight line. He had beat his last heartbeat. The doctor came in and said "I'm so sorry ma'am but it appears that- "I know" Catherine said crying. I didn't even know him but I started crying to. The feeling of watching someone die is the worst. I said goodbye to Catherine and gave her my number incase she needed support. I kissed her on the cheek and left her to say goodbye to her husband. Upset I walked back into the room. "Belarna, Luke's surgery is over but they are waiting an hour before they try to wake him up" cal said
That hour was the longest hour ever and it was horrible. I kept thinking the worst. Ashton held me close and said it would be fine but I know he was questioning himself. We got called in. I just thought back to Catherine and her husband. What if Luke's heart doesn't beat at all?
The nurse opens the door to lukes room.
Poor Catherine. But now it's time to watch Luke's heart beat. If it does. Find out next chapter. I hope you enjoy this~maddie
