A faint knock at my door woke me up. I sat up and saw my little brother Kyle slowly opening the door.
"Raerae, I can't sleep.." He trails off. I open my arms and he runs into them.
"What's keeping you up this time?" I ask.
"Mom is fighting with the landlord again." He says. I just rub his back and soon his breathing goes back to normal and he's out like a light. I slip away from my bed and throw on my slippers. I stumble out into the living room and walk over to my mom.
"Your keeping him up again." I say and shake my head.
"Shut up Rae. You just sit on you're ass all day long." She says. I don't take offense. I've learned not to.
"Please, I'm the only one who takes care of Kyle. He's only 9 mom!" I say my voice staying calm.
"You're a lousy excuse for a daughter." She says. I nod my head.
"That's it I'm done with this." I say. I start to walk away.
"I hate you." She says. I run up to my room and shake Kyle awake.
"Kyle..get up, pack your bags." I say. He sits up and rubs his eyes.
"Why?" He asks.
"We're leaving. I'll take you to aunt Tera's." I say. He nods and leaves the room. I start changing into a sweater, skinny jeans, my boots, and a scarf. I pack my bag, and everything I'll need. I zip it up and Kyle walks in.
"Okay, I'm ready." He says. I open my window, it's about an eight foot drop. I step onto the ledge and throw my bag down. I then grab the window seal and flip off the ledge. I land on the ground and then stand up.
"Jump, I'll catch you!" I say. He looks at me scared for a second then he jumps. I catch him quickly and then we grab our bags and start walking to my aunts.
"Thanks for letting us stay." I say and set my bag down.
"Anytime and as long as you like. How long was your walk?" She asks.
"It took all night." I say. She nods and takes Kyle to his new room.
"Rae I know you're probably tired, but do you think you could walk to my work and give my boss this?" She asks.
I nod knowing Kyle would be safe here alone. My aunt has a security system and a pit bull. "Yeah..what time?" I ask.
"Sometime tonight. I'll be out of the house all night." She says. I nod and walk to the couch and finally, sleep.
