The Apprenticeship

Vienna Barnes is given the opportunity of a lifetime when she is offered an apprenticeship to work for her favourite football club, Sunderland AFC. Sunderland AFC are one of the biggest clubs in the North East. After pulling off the greatest escape in Barclays Premier League history, the Black Cats are back in action, and sitting nervously towards the bottom of the table. Just as Vienna arrives at the club, a bombshell is dropped, and owner Ellis Short sells the club to a mystery new owner. This new owner is determined to keep themselves a secret from the footballing world, and the media are therefore forced to keep possibly the biggest secret and scandal in footballing history. Soon, all begins to fall apart at the club, and the new owners drive Sunderland into the ground. Thinking on her feet, Vienna steps in to offer her help in any shape or form. With problem after problem unveiling, will Sunderland AFC still remain intact by the end of the season?

5. Home Sweet Home

I roll my suitcases in and prop them up against the door as numerous lights flicker on around the room.

"Crap it's absolutely freezing!" Megan announces, roughly rubbing her arms, "Switch the heating on will you. It's by the door"

I spin around and find a black panel just by the door-knob, and press the 'on' switch.

"It'll take at least twenty minutes to heat up mind"

Megan groans in frustration as she sits down on her bean bag. I join her on mine and slowly feel my body start to relax.

My eyes scan the room as the realisation sits in. This is my new home for at least the next two or three years. Or unless this apprenticeship flops then I should be home by Christmas.

"We should really go food shopping tomorrow. Have you got any money on your card?" Megan asks, yawning loudly.

"Yeah, just about erm...four thousand" I laugh.

I don't know how I forgot to tell her about my 'little' present from the family. Guess it just slipped my mind.

"You have four fucking thousand pounds?!" She screeches, her jaw dropping in shock.

"Yeah, erm, the family kinda came together to help me out. I had aunties, uncles and all sorts working extra shifts to try and get a bit more money for me" I explain, "So with my savings, that's nearly five thousand"

"Holy shit V" Megan screams, "We are set!"

"Yeah we may be set for now, but I'm not paying for this all by myself" I joke, "You need to get looking for a job tomorrow"

"I know I know" Megan reassures me, "I looked up some places before we left and I've brought my CV with me, I'll drop them off tomorrow"

I'll be absolutely devastated if Megan doesn't pull her weight. Yes I'm incredibly lucky that I was given such a large sum of money, but that doesn't mean that I can pay for crazy nights out and for us to eat in the most expensive restaurant.

When I start getting paid officially, I will be able to pay for the rent myself, and still have a fair amount left over. But I still need Megan to help out, else I'm screwed.

I give Megan a slight groan in response and rest my head back on my bean bag. The flat looks really bare to be honest. We've not got any photo's up on the walls, and the wallpaper is very clinical in colour. We have deep red satin curtains, which I guess sort of sets the whole colour scheme for our flat.

The kitchen is still the same boring, lifeless colour. We have the basic essentials. A couple of overhead cupboards, a dishwasher, hob, oven and a sink. Oh, and a really low set fridge, which I have to keep breaking my back to look in because I have to keep bending over. I'll turn up to work on Saturday looking like the hunchback of the North East, I can guarantee you.

"I'm really tired Meg, I must just head to bed" I yawn, slowly climbing up to my feet, "Which room's yours again?"

"The one on the left, yours is by the door"

As soon as you walk in our flat you see my bedroom door, and straight in front is the living room and kitchen. As you walk further into the flat, there's a bathroom, and just along from that is Megan's room.

I pick up my suitcases and handbag, and walk into my room. There's a window right on the opposite side, which annoyingly looks out towards the start of the bridge, and Megan's looks directly out on the river.

There's a double bed in the corner of the room, with white and red cotton duvet covers. Apart from that, my room is pretty bare. There's a cute little black woollen carpet in the centre of the room, a wooden bedside table under the window, and on the other side of the room there's a built in wardrobe.

I push the suitcases up against the door, and grab my phone charger from my handbag, plugging it in against my bed. My phone is on a deadly 2%, but the thing is with iPhones, that your phone can last on 2% battery for nearly ten minutes if you do it right. But the battery can go from 100% down to 30% in less than half an hour...I will never understand technology. Apple need to get their shit together.

I've got two messages, from Mum and Henry.

Hope you got there okay darling! I'll call you in the morning. Love you, x

Hey beautiful, I just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you. I'm so proud of you and I hope you know that, call me in the morning okay?! I love you xxxxxx

I so desperately want to text Henry back, but I feel like I may burst out crying again. It's just before midnight, so he'll probably be asleep already.

Without changing, I climb into bed and wrap myself up in my duvet. I plug my headphones in and smile gently as Bang Bang, by Jessie J plays, and I feel myself gently fall asleep as the track plays out.
