Classes finally started and I was beyond busy as hell. Between running from class to class to practice to trying to get all my school work done, to still trying to get some sleep in, it was difficult to even think about Bethany. Since our last conversation about trying out an actual relationship, I hadn’t seen her at all. The only time I had seen her was probably from across campus, crossing paths going to our classes.
“Hey, have you seen Bethany?” Niall asked me as we were walking into the locker room for practice.
“Nope…not since the last time I told you guys about since she showed up at our dorm.”
“Damn…when are you going to see her?”
“Who the hell knows? We’re both insanely busy.”
“Well the weekend is coming up and no one has classes on the weekend…” Niall pointed out.
“Yeah, but its Wednesday. I still have today, tomorrow, and Friday to wait until then.” Niall sighed and shook his head.
“For someone who claims to really like this girl, you don’t try and see her too often.”
“BYE DARREN!” I looked over to the sound of Bethany’s voice and saw her yell goodbye to her friend and come running towards the gym. She ran right passed Niall and I like she was in an insane rush.
After we changed into our practice clothes and walked into the gym, Bethany was there with her dad. Her dad had her over his shoulders and she was squealing, trying to get down; almost like she was a child again.
“DADDDDYYYY!” She screamed, making me smile.
“Your boyfriend is here.” Her dad said, smirking at me. He put her down and she turned and saw me. She smiled and waved at me as she walked up.
“Hey…” She said slowly as she reached Niall and I. Niall quickly said hello and walked away and I shuffled awkwardly.
“How have you been? I haven’t seen you in a few days.”
“I’ve been busy as hell.” I sighed.
“I’ve noticed. You always seem like you’re rushing somewhere at all times.” I smiled and shook my head.
“And you haven’t been rushing around?” Bethany laughed softly and shook her head.
“Nope…I guess I can manage a schedule better than you can. I mean, I’m busy but I’m in no rush to get anywhere anytime soon.”
“Well lucky you then.”
“What are you doing after practice?”
“Homework…which I doubt will get done because Niall always has Louis over and they drink so…I normally don’t get anything done until they pass out.” Bethany shook her head and laughed. “What’s so funny?”
“Which is why I do my school work in the library; want to come with me?” My eyes went wide, surprised at the fact that she invited me. “Fuck, don’t look so surprised.” I shook my head and ran my hands through my hair.
“Uh yeah…sure. I’m cool with that.”
“Alright. Then I’ll see you later.”
“See you later.” I said a she jogged passed me into the locker room, probably so she could get ready for her practice.
After practice, I took a quick shower in the locker room and made my way to the library to find Bethany. I made sure I had everything in my backpack so I wouldn’t be looking like crazy for everything later on tonight.
When I walked in, I saw Bethany in the back corner, nose buried in one of her school books. She had her hair up in a pony-tail and she had sweatpants and a white tank-top on. I smiled to myself then quickly made my way over to her and sat down across from her.
“Hey there.” She said without looking up.
“Hey…how was practice?”
“Sucked…as usual but it was all good. How was your practice?”
“Sucked…but not as bad as the practice your dad had you running.”
“That’s because I push people to their breaking point.” She still hadn’t put the book down and was still writing down notes or whatever.
“Are you even paying attention to me or are you guessing as to what I’m saying?”
“I’m multi-tasking because I’m fucking awesome like that.” She said, turning the page. I laughed and started pulling books out of my backpack. I opened my Public Speaking book and started going over the assignment for the next speech I had before I started writing the speech. “What’s that?” Bethany asked, slightly surprising me. I looked up and noticed she had put her book down and was looking at me now.
“Oh, it’s my public speaking book…I have to write a speech and this is telling me what kind of speech to write.”
“That sounds god awful actually.” She said, smirking at me. I smiled and laughed.
“Yeah, but it is what it is. I have to do it to pass…” Bethany shrugged and sighed, leaning back into her chair. “What? Are you not going to do your homework?”
“I finished it.”
“What did you have to do?”
“Answer a couple pages worth of questions and prepare a monologue for class; both of which I finished before you even got here. I was doing next week’s homework when you walked in.”
“So you have to be ahead of the game?”
“Not really…I was just bored as hell waiting for you.”
“Jeez, that makes me feel better about making you sit here with me.”
“You aren’t making me sit here with you, I’m the one who asked you to come with me, remember?” I laughed and shook my head.
“That’s very true…” I said slowly. Bethany smiled and me and reached into her bag. “So are you really going to sit here and do next week’s homework now?”
“No.” She said, pulling a book out of her bag. “I’m going to read.” I nodded and looked back down at my school work. I got through maybe half of the assignment before I glanced up and looked at Bethany. She was intently reading her book and I smiled, thinking it was cute how into her book she was.
“What are you reading?” I asked slowly.
“The Last Song.”
“Isn’t that a movie?”
“It was a book first. The author of this book is also the only author I will read. I’m very picky about my books.”
“Who’s it by?”
“Nicholas Sparks.” She said, without looking up. I smiled and looked back down at my school work to continue my school work and let her continue her reading.
I was trying really hard to concentrate on my book but it was really difficult seeing as I could feel Harry sitting across from me; it was making me insanely nervous. I slowly turned the page after reading it about seven times over trying to concentrate.
I finally was able to fully concentrate on my book and I got really into it and before I knew it, I was lost in my own mind.
“Hey…Bethany? Hello? Earth to Bethany!” I snapped my head up, looking concerned.
“Is everything okay?” I asked, slightly panicked. Harry laughed at me and shook his head.
“Yeah, everything is fine. I just finished with my work. You’re really into that book…”
“Yeah, that happens.” I said, slowly closing the book and putting it back into my bag.
“Yeah…I was trying to get your attention for like almost five minutes now.”
“Oh shit, I’m sorry!” Harry started laughing and shook his head as he grabbed his backpack.
“Don’t worry about it. So…where are you off to now?” I shrugged and looked around.
“I don’t know. I don’t have any plans. After this I normally just read until I realize that it’s almost one or two in the morning and I should go back to my dorm.” Harry laughed at me again as we made our way out of the library.
“Shit…you really do get into your reading.” I nodded and looked around once we got outside.
“So…what are your plans for the night?” I asked, looking down at my watch and realizing it was only around 8 pm.
“I don’t have any plans…so why don’t we not have any plans together?” Harry suggested, smiling. I smiled back at him and shook my head.
“I’m down.” I said, smiling still.
“Good…so where do you want to go not have plans together?”
“That’s a really good question…” I said slowly.
“How about a late night coffee and a walk down by the river?” Harry suggested. I smiled and nodded.
“That sounds perfect. But before that, I would like to drop all my shit off back at my dorm.”
“Yeah that sounds like a good idea. Do you mind if I leave my stuff at your place since I have to pass it to get back to my dorm?”
“Sure, that’s fine.” I said as we made our way to my dorm. After we dropped our stuff off in my dorm, we made our way to the campus café to get some coffees so we would be able to stay slightly warmer as we walked around. It wasn’t deathly cold, but it was slowly getting colder and colder here so…it would help seeing as I was naturally cold.
After we had gotten out coffees, we walked back over to the river and slowly walked next to it before we found a bench to sit down since we were both growing lazy.
“So…how do you like it here?” Harry asked me as we looked out over the water.
“I like it. I’m not going to complain.”
“But…?” Harry asked me, pushing for more. I laughed, looking down, and shook my head.
“I’m here because it’s family tradition. I could’ve thought of other places I would’ve rather gone but…I can’t complain here. It’s a good school and I’m not going to bitch about it.”
“Wow…not the outlook I would have if I was in your position.”
“Because if I didn’t want to go somewhere, I would make it known and I wouldn’t try too much either. I’d be too miserable to even want to try.” I shrugged and looked back out at the water.
“I’m not going to throw away my whole future just because I could be somewhere else. Granted this wouldn’t have been my first choice but…it wouldn’t have been my last either. I could’ve ended up somewhere worse but…this is where my parents wanted me to go. It wasn’t like they were pushing me towards a major I didn’t want, they just wanted me to go here. That’s really all it is.”
“You have a better outlook than I would.” I smiled and shook my head.
“I just try and see the positives in things. And I really emphasize on the try because sometimes I can be the most miserable human in the world.”
“I think we all have those moments though.” I shrugged and nodded in agreement.
“Yeah I guess that’s true.” Harry nodded and we continued talking about our lives here at MSU. It wasn’t anything deep, anything serious…it was just a conversation. It was us getting to know each other and I didn’t have a problem with that. In fact, I loved it.
After Harry had walked me back to my dorm and he had grabbed his stuff, we hugged goodbye and he slowly walked away as I slowly closed the door.
“So how was the first official date?” Megan asked me as I walked over to my bed.
“It was not a date; we went to the library and did our homework then sat and talked by the river. There was nothing that could be considered date worthy happening.” I said, flopping onto my bed and pulling the covers over me.
“No holding hands or kissing? Nothing?!” Megan asked, sounding slightly disappointed.
“Sorry to disappoint.”
“Are you going to invite him to our scrimmage this Thursday?” Megan asked, making me shrug.
“I don’t really know. I don’t know if him going would even be a good idea.”
“Why? You invited Darren.”
“Darren is like my best guy friend…”I pointed out slowly.
“Yeah and Harry is your half boyfriend. Don’t you think he would want to know about it? Maybe him and Darren can bond at the game and get to know each other.”
“That’s not even funny, Meg!”
“Why not? I don’t see anything wrong with it.”
“Meg…he hates people like Harry!”
“Yet, he’s been trying to get you and Harry to work out just like the rest of have been. He may hate people like Harry and whatever, but he’s a good enough friend to see that he makes you happy and supports you so…you should invite Harry.”
“I don’t know. I’ll think about it.”
“Tomorrow’s our scrimmage, you fucker.”
“Yeah…I know.” After a few more minutes of bickering back and forth, we finally both turned out the lights, said goodnight to each other. Megan seemingly fell asleep right away. Me, however, was up for another hour debating whether or not to invite Harry.
I finally gave in, texted him asking if he wanted to go and then hang out after the game and then shoved my phone under my pillow so I wouldn’t see his reply until tomorrow. I did not want to see it tonight; that would just add more nerves to my pre-game jitters and I really, do not, need that.
“Hey! Bethany texted you!” Zayn called from the other end of the dorm room. I walked out of our bathroom and picked up my phone.
We have a soccer scrimmage tomorrow…I was just wondering if you wanted to come and maybe hang out afterwards. – Bethany
I smiled and responded and then crawled into bed and quickly fell asleep.
