1. Chapter 1
The sound of my muddy boots clomping against the ground echos the forest. I breath in and the smells hit my nose, pine, honey and flowers. I loved this smell. The November leaves crunch under my feet as I near the tree where we meet. A Skylark swoops past me singing it's beautiful song. I swayed to the rhythm of the song as I walked. I pulled my warm leather coat a little more tighter around me as the cold wind nipped at me. I could hear laughter and I smiled to myself. I arrived our meeting spot and plopped down next to Luke. "Hey Dawn!" said Aspen popping a red berry in her mouth. "Hey!" I shouted to her. Aspen was one of my best friends next to Luke. We met in school one day and have been best friends ever since. We met Luke when we were out running away from a coyote in the forest. Aspen was a very beautiful girl, she had short copper coloured hair that went to her shoulders. To match the hair she had little small freckles lining her checks and under her big blue eyes. Aspen had high cheek bones and full lips, her skin was like peaches and cream. She had a very skinny and short figure from lack of food, but she was still beautiful. Luke was tall and very muscular from throwing heavy axes around and chopping down trees. His pale blonde hair stood up on a quiff. His face was hard and pale. He had thin pink lips that went well with his sharp chin and straight nose. His blue eyes matched Aspen's icy ones. His hands were calloused and rough from experience. You see I live in is district 7, the lumber district. we grew up in the forest, able to learn about the living things around us. I never had to chop wood like Luke and Aspen did because my dad is the major of district 7. I never have to work. Our district is poor, just about as poor as district 12. No one can really afford food. That's when Luke, Aspen learned to hunt. We would hunt the animals in the forest and bring the game back to town and feed the people. My father doesn't know about this because if he knew, me and my friends would be publicly executed. Even though he is my dad he would be forced to. It's a cruel world. I pushed my hazelnut brown hair away from my face and scooted closer to Luke. "Comer ere you." he said pulling me onto his lap. "I need a boyfriend..." said Aspen frowning. "Don't say that! You're beautiful enough to get one you just have to make and effort." I told her. "I guess." she said with a shrug. I smiled at her. "There is Keith..." I trailed off. Aspen blushed and looked down. "He likes you!" I accidentally blurted out. Aspen's head shot up at me and Luke's big hand covered my mouth. "I knew it!" Aspen yelled out and jumped around. I smiled at her and Luke moved his hand off my mouth. I looked at the sun, it sunk down letting it get darker. The stars and moon would come out soon. It was time for me to go. "Guys I have to go my father will be home anytime now. I will see you later! Byee" I yelled as I ran off toward the capital building where i live.
Her hair was a rich shade of mahagony. It flowed in waves to adorn her glowing, porcelain-like skin. Her eyes, framed by long lashes, were a bright, emerald-green and seemed to brighten the world. A straight nose, full lips - she seemed the picture of perfection. Had she smiled, the world would sigh with contentment. Had she laughed, the world would laugh with her. And had she wept, the whole world would want to comfort her. Dawn was a beautiful girl. She just lived a hard life like all of us. She protected her people and friends. Even though it could get her killed....
