I stood by the front door waiting for Luke. "I thought it was suppose to be girls that took forever to get ready" I teased as Luke came jogging down the stairs in a red chequered shirt and black skinny jeans with the knees cut out. He slipped on a pair of black vans and grabbed a hoodie. I stood there waiting patiently but then something caught my eye.
"Is that a lip piercing?" I asked rhetorically. "I didn't notice it before."
"Yeah I take out when I'm not going anywhere" he said whilst tying his shoe lace.
"It looks hot!" I blurted out. Oops I didn't mean to say that out loud! Luke looked up at me. I immediately turned around to hide the embarrassment of my face. "Uh, let's go shall we?" I said whilst opening the door.
We took the bus into the main area of Sydney. I had no idea where I was going so I had complete trust in Luke. We visited so many interesting places that I never heard of and even got to see my goal locations like The Opera House. The day was going so well. Except Luke didn't really have much to say. I guess my tour guide was only good for the travel but not for the information. He actually seemed really bored. Obviously he'd visited these places so many times before. Right?
We went to Sea World and checked out the penguins. "I love penguins" he said, for the first time he actually seemed excited. But then he looked at me funny, a few people did whenever they heard me speak.
"Luke why am I getting strange looks?" I ask worryingly.
He leaned his back against the bar and rested his elbows on it. He spoke like a narrator on a BBC documentary. "In May, earlier this year, there was a group of British lads that came to Australia for a holiday, they got really drunk and broke into the penguin cage. The next day they woke up with a penguin in their room." Then he spoke normally again, but this time he said with a smile. "Don't get any ideas. You leave my penguins alone!" I laughed at his little story, a little more than I should have...
I was leaning against the bar of the sharks cage, damn these were actually really cute. Luke came up and pulled me by the arm. "Come on let's get something to eat." He ordered as began to walk.
I put my hand on his arm to stop him. "Wait Luke can you please just say 'there's a shark in the water' for me?" I begged, I had an Australian friend back home and everyone asked her to say it but she always refused, even to me! So I took my chance here.
Luke just gave me a look that said 'really Anna? really?' I felt like a dumbass.
He took me to McDonalds, oh how fancy. I ordered a chicken legend meal with mayo and a banana milkshake, I always got the same thing in McDonalds I didn't like trying new things. I also got one of the new chocolate chip cookie McFlurry's. Mmmm it was delicious.
Luke spent a lot of time on his phone. I wandered what he was up to.
'Is he speaking to a girl? Well a guy like this he's probably speaking to a bunch of girls."
- Luke actually was talking to a bunch of girls, but I didn't know it at this point-
I slouched in my seat and tried to think of a way to start a conversation. "Wow I'm stuffed!" I exclaimed. He just ignored me. "where do you think we should go next?" I asked.
Without taking his eyes off his phone he just said "home."
I shook my head. "No I don't wanna go home there's so many more places to go, so much more to see!" I pleaded.
Finally Luke looked up at me, "calm down, not Britain just back to my place. You can come see the rest another time."
I knew he meant 'home' as in 'his house', he didn't need to mock me. I huffed and binned my tray.
'I guess I could come back next week...'
Luke noticed that I was annoyed but didn't say anything, he just stood up and walked out. I followed.
