He smiles sweetly at me and I suddenly become very self concious. "Daniel, what are you doing here?"
"Well, after your phone call I got really worried so I thought I'd come see if you were OK."
"You didn't have to do that!" I say hugging him.
"Can I come in? It's cold out here!"
I was unsure of what Paul would say, but I knew he wouldn't do anything to me while there was someone else here. "Um, sure." I stood out the way so he could enter through the small door. "Sorry bout the mess, we had a small party." I lied pointing to the half empty beer cans and bottles that were scattered across the floor, I didn't tell him that it was all in Paul's increasing beer belly.
"And I was invited?" He asked, pretending to sound insulted, making me giggle.
"Nobody was, Paul just wanted to bring some mates home from work." I am getting good at lying.
"Well it's not the worse I've seen. Trust me!" I do trust you..I love you...
I hear Paul's normally vicious and hurtful tone turned to sweet gold, "Daniel! How are you? It's been ages."
We both turn to face him, Daniel smiles, "Well you've obviously been very busy! Especially with the party!"
His face looks confused "What party?"
Daniel's smile fades as he turns to me. "Do you want a drink or something to eat?" I ask breaking the silence. Paul shakes his head and moves towards the sofa,
"Nah I'm good thanks." Daniel answers.
I smile and move towards the kitchen, taking a glass of the sideboard and filling it with water, I hadn't drank or eaten anything in nearly two days. I move back into the living room, Daniel stood by the sofa talking to Paul about random stuff, I feel the sunlight stroke my cheek through the window. Daniel's smile fades once more, he moves closer to me.
"What happened to your face?" He asks, concerned.
Before I even have time to think up a lie, I hear Paul's voice, "Silly cow walked into the door." Daniel looks at me unconvinced, before nodding at Paul.
"You should be more careful, someone might think you've been beaten up." His voice deepens and his eyes darken in anger. He's clicked, I see him grit his teeth. It's as if he's just seen every single punch, kick and beating Paul has ever given me.
"Now why would anyone want to do that?" Paul questions, squaring his jaw.
"I don't know, but I do know that if I found out that anyone did anything to hurt her, I'd kill them." At this point I didn't know whether to be afraid or to feel protected.
"Well it's a good thing that isn't happening then."
"Paul? Don't you have to go to work?" I ask quietly, he glances at the clock 12.47(pm), he nods,
"I better be off then!" He says laughing at the fact he nearly forgot to go to work. He walks towards the door, opening it standing just outside with his hand on the door, "And you," He says pointing at me, "Don't forget to clean this place up." He laughs again but I know he is deadly serious. He shuts the door behind him and I sigh.
A few minutes pass before Daniel, breaks the silence. "What the hell is going on?" I look down at the floor, hoping he'll drop the subject. I know he won't.
