10. Money Makes the World go Round
"I'm here for you."
They looked awkwardly at the sheets.
"You can tell me anything."
"I won't -"
"Ty, I need you to shut up for a minute while I talk." She took a deep breath. "I lied. You got the letter meant for my friend, you see. I didn't want her to know the truth. I didn't want her to know that I . . . It wasn't a car accident, Ty. It was . . . Well, I'm rich. And my Mother? She's got connections. Connections with some not very nice people. Not very nice people tend to have not very nice enemies. Money, Ty. It makes the world go round. I don't, I can't, I -" She swallowed. "They took me from the house." Her voice was a whisper now. "They were so strong, I couldn't - I tried to stop them. But they, they were so strong, Ty. There was nothing I could do to stop them. Especially when my Mother refused to pay as much as they wanted. She thought it would make them back down a little. She was wrong. So, so wrong. They agreed to her price. But what she didn't give them in money, they took from me in-" Hot tears made their way down her face. "They were so cruel. It was a lab they took me to. So there was plenty for them to use. When they gave me back to my Mother, it was on a stretcher. Straight away, she brought me here. Ty, there's something I have to do. A decision I have to make. But I can't make it. You have to. Because I love you, Ty. I love you. And there's a piece of metal working it's way towards my hippocampus."
