In the Beginning • Calum Hood

I opened my eyes which I hadn’t realised I’d closed. As they fluttered open, they met the shining ones of Calum, seriously what was with me and his eyes. To be perfectly honest, they were the colour of dog shit, but they were truly the most beautiful dog shit coloured eyes I’d ever seen. His answering smile was just as impassioned as I imagined mine. “That was…wow...” When Anni's long term best friend, Luke, starts a band without her, she is shattered. It was always their dream, and now he was doing it without her? But what she didn't bargain for was the problems that would come with it. Will she fall for a new member? Or will a piece of her past come back and force its way back into her heart? Will this band drive a wedge between friendships? *Strong language and adult themes* *Weekly updates*

7. Chapter 5

I stared at him and said just two words,

"Your dead."

Then I ran at him.

Luke POV

I charged at him with all my speed and smashed into the very confused and surprised Ashton. I put all my body weight onto, my legs over his torso, pinning him down.  I lifted my fist to crunch his nose but someone pulled me away from my position on top of the newest band member. The room was filled with shouting and Megan was screaming at me to stop.

As my body weight was ripped away from the boy I so desperately wanted to smash, he stumbled up from his position on the ground.

“What the hell, Luke?” he shouted, admittedly confused, “Why the fuck would you tackle me?”

With a snort and an attempt to get out of the strong grip encircling me, I spat back,

“Don’t fucking act like you don’t know what you’ve done, Ashton.”

I heard Calum’s voice behind me, identifying him as the person holding me back. I didn’t listen to what he was saying, but I was guessing it was something along the lines of ‘Chill out, Luke’. I finally reefed my body out of his arms and crossed my own over my chest, continuing to send death glares at the new drummer.

Ashton was still looking at me, his face portraying one of a confused puppy. I wanted to punch it. Deciding to give him a hint I pointed upstairs and bellowed,

“You and Annika! Upstairs! Sucking face!”

His face went a shade paler and his hand reached up to grab at the back of his neck, his other hand playing with the hem of his purple shirt. He attempted to reply but I cut him off abruptly.

“Luke, listen-“

“No- you listen, Ashton! You have hurt Annika in the past, and now you think you can waltz into my house and expect to get away with making out with my best friend.” My rage from earlier was beginning to make an appearance, again.

I walk forwards and go to get up in his face, but he turns on his heel sharply and sprints upstairs

“No, you fucking don’t, Irwin!” I scream as loud as humanly possible, tearing after him. I pass my very confused mother in the kitchen, but I don’t slow down; all my attention to focused on wanting to hurt Ashton as much as possible.

Steps are pounding behind me, and as I expect Calum is leading the charge after me and the other boy. I burst through the front door, and I am almost amused to see Ashton pedalling away down the street on a pushbike, disregarding the fact that the sky is darkening with every second, due to the sun going down and the ever-pressing clouds on the predicted thunderstorm of this afternoon.

I hesitate only for a second before giving chase, my legs pumping hard; trying to keep up with the lanky boy on his bicycle. As I close the distance between the bike and me, I flick my head back to see only Michael and Megan chasing still. Surprisingly, Calum must have decided to stay behind, for some unknown reason.

I flick my head back around, just in time to see Ashton’s bike chain make an awful grinding sound and snap. He must have sensed his attempt of escape had just failed he braked and swung himself off the bike to face me, his face giving all indications of acceptance to the fact I was going to catch him.

I slow to a jog and allowed myself to catch my breath as I made my way down the pot-holed road. Mikey and Megan catch up behind me and I am not surprised to see Mikey’s face red and sweating, but I am also surprised to see that Megan looked barely out of breath. Seeing my expression she shrugged,

“School’s cross-country team- best runner since 8th grade.”

Guess you learn something new every day. By now, the three of us had reached Ashton and he shuffled his foot around. It was quiet for a few seconds, with Ashton finally breaking it.

“Luke, listen… I didn’t, ya’ know, mean to kiss Anni or anything but, we were kinda talking about possibly being friends again and we got caught in the moment, ya’ know?” His voice was hopeful, oh god, as much as I wanted to punch him; I couldn’t.

I was having a major internal dilemma, did I risk forgiving Ashton, having him play in the band and have the possibility of him hurting Anni again, or blow him off risk losing an amazing drummer all because I may have been slightly- okay, majorly- over-protective. Ashton could be what gets us noticed, should I really give that up?

I nod slowly towards Ashton, but hesitantly. I decided to leave this whole issue alone, if I was permitted to leave him with a threat.

“I forgive you, Ashton. But mark my words- you hurt Annika in any way, and I will hunt you down and cut off your balls and hang them on the tree outside of my house.”

I watched Ashton’s reaction, he gulped and nodded quickly. He also moved his hands rather quickly to protect his crown jewels, I was guessing that the image I put in his head caused this. I chuckled and moved towards Ashton, sticking out my hand for him to shake. He removed one hand and grasped it in mine, smiling.

Behind me I heard Mikey and Megan let out sighs of relief, clearly thankful for the fact that I didn’t continue attempting to bash Ashton’s brains in. I reeled Ashton in by the hand I had hold of an pulled him into a playful head rub, giving him a quick ‘noogie’.

Ignoring the fact that there was pizza at home, I announce,

“Who wants pizza, my treat!”

Annika POV

“Luke? You here?” I called, walking over the threshold into the Hemmings household, once again. I call again, on the third try I get a rather surprising reply,

“Anni? What are you doing here?”

”Calum?” My eyebrows rose substantially, “Where is everyone?”

He rubs his neck, seemingly uncomfortable. “They, uh, went out for some stuff… But what are you doing here?”

He changed the subject quickly, he was acting a little bit suspiciously, like he didn’t want to tell me where Megan, Luke, Mikey and Ashton were. Hmm… I was startled by a sudden thought, this was the first time Calum and I had actually talked- just us two. I smiled at the thought, maybe I could scrutinize into Luke’s new friends a little bit more while he wasn’t around.

“Oh, well, my car broke down so I came back here to call a tow truck and maybe get a ride home with Liz or something.”

Calum’s eyes widened with concern, “Wait- you walked back here, on your own, as it was getting dark? Are you mental, do you know what creeps walk around here at this time?” he shook his head and ran is large fingers through his hair, I almost chuckled at his reaction. I had barely known him a week and here he was acting almost as protective as Luke. Almost.

“Cal, its fine I’ve walked around Sydney at sunset before…”

“I know, Anni, but still, you should have called Luke or something-“

My emotions flaring up at the thought of Luke, I snapped at Calum,

“If I hadn’t left my phone here, maybe I would have called someone- just not Luke.”

Calum shuffled his foot, still standing awkwardly in the hall. I moved towards and then brushed past him, moving down towards the stairs. My hand brushed his, the touch sending goose-bumps up my arm. His fingers wrapped gently around my wrist and pulled me back towards him.

Still holding me, he looked into my eyes,

“Annika, I am sorry for ratting you out to Luke, that was a dog act. And sorry for also bringing up Luke again…”

I was mesmerized by his eyes, the dark brown so dark it was almost black. They were wide with emotion, I couldn’t escape the depth of them. I smiled replying,

“Its okay, Cal, sure I am still pissed but I forgive you.”

His answering smile couldn’t have outshone a thousand suns. It was really something to behold.

I grinned wider and shuffled my way past Calum, walking down the stairs for the countless time today. Walking down I see that the pizza still lies untouched on the coffee table, reminding me that everyone had disappeared, and without Calum for that matter… Light footsteps behind me signalled that Calum was continuing to follow me,

“Hey Cal, where is everyone?”

He didn’t respond, but simply bounded past me, picking up one of the boys acoustic guitars. He strummed it, checking it was in tune before plonking down into one of the sofa’s and shyly smiling at me; and patting the seat next to him. I ambled over to him and crossed my legs, yoga style. I noticed he still hadn’t answered my question, letting it go for the moment I lift my eyes to his; noticing they were already looking at me I flash them down, blushing lightly.

I reach over to the guitar I know is Luke’s, following the same process as Calum did checking that it was tuned. Playing a simple chord progression I started playing the intro to a song I had fell in love with. Recognising the tune, Calum joined in and soon we were playing together, I began lowly singing the first verse,

And so it goes another lonely day
Your savin time but your miles away
Your fly was drownin in some bitter tea
For seeing lost opportunity

Find your mirror go and look inside
And see the talent you always hide
Don't go kidd yourself well not today
Satisfaction's not to far away

My guitar playing faded out, and Calum continued to play but he surprised me when his voice joined mine in the chorus

Hold on now your exits here
It's waiting just for you
Don't pause too long
It's fading now
It's ending all too soon you'll see

Soon you'll see

I began to notice by the second verse and chorus that his voice was high and clear, and a small lisp that was hidden when he talked. Smiling, I thought it was unbelievably adorable. As our voices harmonised, sometimes making mistakes with the pitch I smiled. As the last chords faded out of ‘soon you’ll see’ at the end of the song, I opened my eyes which I hadn’t realised I’d closed.

“That was…wow...”

He flung his head back and let out a loud laugh at my attempt of breaking the silence. Shaking his head he looked back at me and said,

“Did you even need to ask?” I replied grabbing a now cold slice from the table in front of me.

“Okay, my turn!” I yelled, my cheeks burning from his last question, the story of my first kiss, which was highly embarrassing. After chatting for a while we soon began playing a game of twenty questions, which slowly was becoming more and more inappropriate. He ignored me and continued to laugh, letting out disconnected words,

“You…him…tree...Jack…punching him… Oh my god, that’s beyond fucking hilarious!”

I reached over and smacked his arm, only half joking,

“Shut up, Cal, you twat!” He only let out another howl of laughter at my scarlet face. After wiping away tears he sobers up, waiting for my question. I thought about it, deciding how to get him back from the previous question, unable to think of anything I asked him the most stereotypical question,

“Who’s your crush at the moment?”

I don’t understand his reaction very much; he goes very still and mumbles something under his breath I couldn’t hear. He looks back up at me, the shy Calum returning, he quickly reached forward to grab an oreo on the table. We ended up raiding Luke's fridge together.

“What! You can’t do that, Calum, that defeats the purpose of this game!” He shook his head at my outrage, his mouth pressed in a tight line, he wasn’t going to break anytime soon; this only sparked my curiosity further.

“Fine, I’ll find out eventually.” I snap at him, crossing my arms clearly annoyed.

“I’m sure you will,” he mumbled, confusing me only further. Clearing his throat he throws out a random question.

My mouth falls open and snaps shut, audibly. I jump to my feet and pretend to look at my watch.

“Oh look at the time, I have to go, sorry Calum.”

Calum looks up at me, now it was his turn to be confused.

“Anni, wait, I didn’t mean to ask that, wait, Anni!” I was out of the basement by the time he had finished, and seconds later I was out the door again. I yanked the door open, and burst out into the driveway and ran out into the street, ignoring the rain that was pelting down now. I hadn’t thought about the weather during the time I was with Calum, turns out the predicted storm had hit. And with a lot more force than first assumed. I put my head out and ran through the rain, ignoring the cars that zoomed past me.

Shivering, I unlock the door to my house and step my into the house. I trudge up the stairs towards my bedroom, stomping my feet. My parents were out for dinner and my brother Declan was at a friends’ place so I had the house to myself. Walking into my bedroom I make my way over to the blinds and pull them shut. Shrugging out of my jacket, I feel my pockets for my phone,

“Fuck!” In my sudden haste to leave, I once again forgot to pick up my phone. Pulling my hands through my hair, I decide I’ll just have to live without twitter for one night. I pull off my soaping clothes and decide to just have a shower, unable to think of another way to get warm fast.

After a quick 5 minute shower I run the brush through my hair and pull on an old sweater. Deciding to just sleep in my underwear and sweater I crawl beneath the sheets and pull out my book, opening to the page I begin to read when the lights go out. Blackout. Well fuck. Guess I won’t be reading, I think. Attempting to find my bedside table I place my book down and roll over, but thoughts began to cloud my mind.

Should I have told Calum about the whole virgin thing, or not? No, too early, I didn’t want him to tell anyone, I made the right decision to leave when I did.

My ears perk up at the sound, plink. Oh shit, was someone outside my window. I bet it is a murderer, knowing I am home alone, waiting for me to fall asleep and then creeping into my bedroom to-

Plink, plink, plink

Okay, someone was definitely outside my window. I crawl out of my warm sheets and over to the window. Opening the blinds I am only met with the dark and droplets of rain on my window. Pushing my windows open I go to look down, before I am hit in the face with something hard.

I let out a surprised yelp of pain, and fall back further into my room. From below my window I hear a loud curse that was beginning to sound all too familiar. Standing back up, clutching my forehead I look down to the person throwing stones at my window, and my forehead.

Staring at me, he lifts his hand, holding my phone. He was standing in the pouring rain, below my window to give me phone?
