8. Chapter 7- Race

We all sprinted for our lives. I felt the pressure on now. The finish line was so far away, the field must be about three miles long. I don't know about Intelligent, but I didn't have to run much in Defenceless. I looked to the side of me and I saw Peter panting already, we were only a quarter of the way. I looked behind me to see Ben jogging, he was so far behind us three, even if he did a major sprint at the end, he wouldn't win.

Half way. One and a half miles. I couldn't believe it, I was actually alright. Me and Peter had made a pack not to run in front of one another. This was much harder than it seemed. I just wanted to lay down and forget about all this. My legs hurt and I was running out of breath. My jaw started to ache too, I was now panting in time with Peter and Camilla. Ben was so far behind us it was unbelievable!

We were all in line again, sprinting for the last quarter of the field. Ben, next to me was having a hard time breathing. Camilla was in the lead by a few inches. The only thing I wanted right now was to come third. I didn't mind what place I came in, as long as it wasn't last.

We came close to the finish line and we saw Jay with a electronic board, saying who's coming last. Ben was last at the moment but I was only in front of him by a few steps. Camilla crossed the finish line and then Peter. My whole life was then in slow motion, Ben turned up next to me and we stepped over the finish line at the same time. I jumped at Peter and wrapped my legs around him. That brought us both to the floor. I stared at him, eyes locked. Peter rolled on top of me, protectively. He lent in to kiss me, but then Jay pulled him off me and took me by the collar of my shirt. He pulled me off the field and pushed me against a tall tree.

"What are you doing?!" I screamed at him, he stared at me,

"You weren't meant to win that race. Your not meant to be in Valiant. You are Defenceless!" He shouted in my face, making me feel terrible.

Since no one actually lost, no one went home. Until Phase 3...
