“There’s a position open at Ethan’s company. He pays good money.” Jesy and I were sitting at one of the tables in the coffee shop. It had been an entire year since Ethan left the agency. He was known a rogue agent and was proud of it. “How do you know that?” I asked.
“I work there. How else would I know of this information Harry? I think you need a job to get your mind off of things. It really does help.” She said. Jesy has never been wrong about anything.
She had been there for me since the beginning and I couldn’t thank her enough. I wanted to take her out for dinner sometime, but I think that’d be weird. I haven’t really thought about dating since her. “Just think about it.” She added.
Eventually, I managed to acquire an application and hand it in. A few days later I was called in for an interview. This was definitely going to be interesting. I drove to the company and entered the elevator, pressing the button of the floor to Ethan’s office.
I stepped out of the elevator and walked down the long hallway once more, then proceeded to knock on the door. Ethan’s voice called out from the other side and I entered. “Harry, I wasn’t expecting to see you.” Ethan didn’t sound surprised. Was that the kind of tone he was going for?
“I was told a position was open.” I said.
“Who told you?” he asked. I told him that it was Jesy who informed me of the position. He wasn’t surprised about this either, but he interviewed me anyway. He showed me out the door and walked me to the elevator.
“If you really say that you’re reliable and a hard worker, then I’ll have to say that you start next Monday.” He held out his hand for me to shake. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Reluctantly, I held out my hand and shook. “Thanks. I won’t let you down.” Though, a part of me was going to regret that soon enough.
That Monday I started my first day at my new job. I parked my car in the lot and entered the building. “Good morning Mr. Styles.” Colleen smiled at me as I approached her desk. “Now, what was the name I prefer?” I asked her and pulled out a rose from the inside of my jacket pocket. Colleen blushed as she took the rose I gave her. “Good morning Harry.” She corrected herself.
“Much better. Have a good day Colleen.” I casually began to walk down the hallway when Ethan greeted me halfway. “Mr. Styles, good to see you. I’ll show you where you’ll be working.” I followed Ethan around a corner towards a group of cubicles. “Mr. Horan!” He called out to a guy sitting at his desk. He spun around in his chair. “Yes sir?” he asked. He had a very noticeable Irish accent.
“This is Mr. Styles. You will be working with him.” Ethan said. The blonde haired guy nodded, then Ethan walked away. “I’m Niall.” Niall held out his hand towards me. I shook hands with him and introduced myself to him as Harry.
“Niall, are you slacking off again?” The blonde haired girl entered the room. It was the same girl I had seen walking out of Ethan’s office. “Get to work.” She had a folder in her hands and sat down in her seat, then proceeded to do her work.
“Who’s that?” I ask.
“Perrie. She’s never really nice to any of us, well, except to those who are her friends.” He said. Two more people entered the room, none of which was Jesy. “Jade…” He described as the one with the blue streak in her hair. “…is Perrie’s best friend. They are always talking and laughing about whatever goes through their brains.”
“Hey Niall.” A guy walked up to us. He was fairly tall, had brown hair, and looked a bit more built than Niall. “Liam, this is Harry. Harry, this is Liam.” Liam and I shook hands, and then was immediately told that he and Niall were best friends. They’ve been working together for two years. “Has he met Jesy yet?” Liam asked, retreating to his seat beside Niall.
As if on cue, Jesy enters and says, “Sorry I’m a bit- Harry!” She gave me a hug. I smiled and hugged her back. “Glad to see that Mr. Jensen’s come around to letting you work here.” She pulled away and we were both given blank stares by everybody in the entire room.
“Jes, you know this new guy?” Jade asked, motioning to me.
“Yeah, we met in the coffee shop two years back. He’s a good friend of mine.” Jesy replied. At least she didn’t mention to anyone that we both work at the agency. “Are you from here?” Perrie asked.
“I moved here from the UK a few months after college.” I replied.
“Really? All of us went to college here, but obviously grew up in the countries we’re from. It’s crazy to think that you’re kind of one of us.” Perrie sounded interested in me, but I don’t think she was. Maybe she was just being nice to me. Eventually all of us had to get to work before Ethan began to notice. Lunch break came around and we all sat down at our respective tables.
As the weeks passed by, I had gotten along great with Niall and Liam. They eventually became one of my best friends whom I confided in. I came into work early one morning and saw Jade in the break room drinking coffee. “Morning Jade.” I greeted her with a smile.
“Morning Harry.” She said. “What do you want?”
“I don’t want anything from you.” I said.
“You haven’t talked to me since you first started working here, so why are you bothering to talk to me now?”
“Can’t we both take the time to get to know each other better?” I ask.
“If you insist…” She trailed off, and then took a sip of her coffee. “What do you think of your job so far?” Those were how most of our conversations started. I was pretty confident that Jade was actually warming up to me and then our conversations turned into talking about Niall.
She was telling me how much he liked her, but she only saw him as a friend. Was she really asking me for advice on what to do? Was she barely noticing the fact that I was flirting with her?
She wasn’t really my type, but there was no way I could ever date Jesy or Perrie. “Would you ever date one of us? I mean, out of the three girls.” She said.
“Jesy has been more like a sister, rather than someone I would date. She’s a really great girl, but not for me. Perrie,” I paused. I always thought Perrie was a snob. Clearly, she wasn’t interested in Liam or Niall for starters.
She did show a slight interest in Ethan. I told Jade that Perrie’s ‘The Princess’ and that she believes she’s the boss of everyone. “She’s always telling people what to do, doesn’t it drive you mad?”
That statement alone ended our conversation immediately. Jade began to hate me, but I didn’t care. She had an attitude as well. After work, I’d go back to the agency and catch up on some paper work I’ve missed.
Jesy, Louis, and I have been training all the new agents that passed their test. I replaced Ethan’s job as the combat teacher. I have been promoted at least twice and moved up a few floors, changing offices. The one I’m in now is massive, better than the old one.
Still, I wish Louis and I were on the same floor. No one really envied me at the agency. They all praised me for my achievements and I’ve made a lot of new friends, but none really stayed except for Louis and Jesy.
Carter was still a good friend of mine, but I kind of shut him out too. Just thinking about how many people I’ve shut out because of the incident with Ethan was insane. At the company, I began to miss days. Ethan was just not having it. After three warnings, I just began to show up late. It wasn’t every day though. It was once every three to four months.
I began to slack off during work and it definitely showed. Ethan began to hate me even more, but I didn’t care. At the apartment, this new girl moved into my building.
I don’t know what she looked like. She was already in the elevator when I stepped in. I assumed she lived a few floors above me. She had beautiful blonde hair, long. She was much more beautiful than Perrie.
Something about the air between us was different. I’ve never felt this before with any other girl, except one. As soon as the doors opened, I stepped out and walked off in the opposite direction. I could barely hear my thoughts in there.
I strolled to the usual coffee shop and ordered myself a cup of coffee. As soon as it was ready, I turned and was about to pick it up before running into her. “Sorry.” I muttered, quickly grabbing my drink, and left.
Her eyes were beautiful as well. On Monday, I arrived at work much later than usual. There was that girl from the apartment building and the coffee shop. I got into my desk, located behind Niall. “It’s about time you got here Harry.” Jade approached us with a coffee cup in her hand.
“Shut it Jade.” I sneered as she sat down in the desk beside me, then focused her attention towards the screen. “Have you met the new girl, Camille?” Perrie called out to me. My attention was soon directed towards the new girl beside Perrie. “Yeah, in the coffee shop.”
I turned my gaze away from hers because I didn’t want to look her directly in the eyes. I didn’t want her to know me. I wasn’t going to let myself fall for her, not again was I going to go through what I had gone through three years ago. I knew that this girl, I knew that she was different.
