"It's something Mali never tried," Calum admitted. "After she realized that Ashton's memory of her was taken away, it just hurt her too much. She sort of left it at that."
"So she spent so much time trying to conjure up spells and potions, but never bothered trying to kiss the boy?" Michael quizzed.
"Isn't this just some cliché Sleeping Beauty thing?" I sighed.
Calum looked at the floor with an odd expression I couldn't place. It was like he found something confusingly funny.
"But we never tried it," Michael told me. "So it might work."
I groaned from my place on Luke. He had pulled me into his lap after I fought with Michael that I had to go see my brother, and just let me stay there. Mikey told me that Jeremy had died in the house and was stuck there now - how would he explain that to mom and dad? - and Ashton goes over there a lot to talk to Jeremy. Why? I don't know.
"We're sending you to your house because he's probably there." Michael told me.
"But what about his powers?" I wondered.
"That potion lasts twenty-four hours." Calum told me as he got off the floor by the coffee table.
"Okay," I nodded. "But how do I...do this?"
"Cooper, don't ask us how to suck face with your own boy- erm, with Irwin," Michael said in a disgusted tone. "I think you can figure that out for yourself."
Luke nudged me off of him and stood with me, bringing me to the door and opening it. "Now march your little butt across the street and go get your boyfriend back."
Quietly behind me, Michael added, "Hopefully."
I opened the door as quietly as I could, but Jeremy appeared in front of me anyway, making me jump. "What the hell are you doing here?"
"Thanks for telling me!" I shouted at him, not really caring if Ashton was around or not.
"T-telling you w-what?" he stammered.
"Luke told me," I stated. "Why wouldn't you tell me? I've been putting up with dead people since you moved in."
He shrugged. "I didn't want to ruin things with you and Ashton."
I stared at him. "What?"
His eyes widened at me. "What are you talking about?"
"You're dead. What are you talking about?"
"What would ruin things between us?" I asked in a whisper.
"You didn't come here to question me, did you?" he inquired quickly, changing the subject.
While he was right, I still wanted to question him. I was just surprised I wasn't freaking out as much as I should've been. Maybe because I was kind of used to dead people by now. Or maybe because I could still see and talk to my brother. At any rate, I had to find Ashton.
"Is Ashton here?" I wondered.
"He left a little bit ago, but you shouldn't be looking for him anyway." he stated, crossing his arms.
"And why not?"
"You're not immune."
"Am so. Calum gave me an immunity potion," I stated matter-of-factly. Then I added, "You do know about Calum, don't you?"
He nodded. "Ashton told me mostly everything. Speaking of which, are you and Luke actually together now?"
I laughed. "We just did that to see if it would help with Ashton's memory."
Jeremy scoffed. "If anything, it pissed him off even more."
I groaned, slapping my palm against my forehead. That must've explained why he lashed out earlier. He never did that when I first met him. He was probably upset because we had just been so close with each other and he admitted to falling for me, and then I was suddenly kissing his best friend. He was feeling lonely again.
"Do you know where he'd be?" I wondered. I knew Ashton wouldn't just appear out of nowhere unlike my brother, apparently.
"Go wait in your old room," Jeremy instructed after a moment of thinking. "I'll get him."
I jogged up the stairs and went down the hall to my empty room. I sat on the bedding-less mattress, looking around at the bare walls. I glanced over at the window, smiling to myself as I thought about the times Ashton snuck up to stay with me. Now I realized how he got up the side of the house.
There was a knock at my door. Instead of getting up, I just said they could come in. Ashton shuffled in, standing awkwardly in front of the door after he closed it. He had his sunglasses on and his hands jammed in his pockets.
"I'm immune," I informed him. "Your powers can't work on me. You can take the glasses off. I-if you want to."
Ashton slowly slid off is sunglasses, his eyes looking at my confused and curious. I took a deep breath, looking at my hands in my lap. "What you saw between Luke and I- Ashton, we're not together. I loved you and I know you know that. You've seen it."
I glanced up at him, seeing if there would be any reaction. There was none. I patted the spot next to me and he sat down - farther away than I would've liked. I looked him in the eyes. "We've been trying everything to get your memory back. Luke thought jealousy would help get your memories of me back. Him and the boys know how much you mean to me; how much we meant to each other. Do you remember anything of Mali-Koa Hood? Anything the boys have told you?"
"They told you you used to be engaged to her, right? But you were killed and your memory got taken away for her to save you."
He nodded again.
"Right. Well, they said after that happened, you started having your episodes. You remember those, right?"
He hesitated, but nodded.
"They told me that they got less frequent after you met me. They even got to the point that they stopped happening," I gave a small smile. "Because you felt alone because you didn't have that love in your life anymore. I was - apparently - that love. And now that you forgot me, your episodes are coming back."
He looked down as he processed what I was telling him. After a few minutes of him looking at his lap, I cautiously brought my hand to his face. I tilted it up so he would look at me. "We need you back, Ashton. I need you back. You need you back. They said they tried everything...except one thing."
Ashton shrugged, still looking at me. What is it?
I took a deep breath again, afraid he would push me away. But I went for it anyway and pressed my mouth to his. It started out soft, my lips hardly against his. But without thinking, I pressed my mouth to his with force. I was surprised to find him kissing me back, his mouth and tongue moving with mine. He hands gripping at my waist with almost a neediness to it. One of my hands stayed on his face while the other weaved through his hair.
After a few minutes of that, I finally pulled away. He kept his forehead to mine, both of us breathing irregularly. My eyes flashed up to his at the sound of a soft chuckle. He was staring down at my legs that I'd pulled up onto his lap.
"That's twice you've saved me now, Bridgette," Ashton smiled, his eyes finally looking up to meet mine. My heart fluttered. "Technically three times."
I smiled. "You're back."
"Nah, it was like an episode," he told me. "I was in there somewhere. It just took some digging."
"H-how?" I wondered, pulling away from him. I kept his face close to mine, but there were a few inches of space. "Was it really just a kiss?"
Ashton shrugged. His hands were still on my sides. "Well, the spells that are given to someone when bringing someone back are stronger than spells given at any moment - Ms Hood told Mali that when their family was trying to get my memory of her back. So I think that if Mali were to have kissed me, it wouldn't have worked. There wasn't that little bit of me saying, "That girl seems familiar", you know? With you, there was always something in the back of my head telling me you were significant somehow. And when Luke kissed you - oh my God, I wanted to rip his teeth out and jam them in his eyes. You just helped pull that little bit of me back up to the surface. The memory loss spell was just like a giant episode."
I laughed. "So you remember me now."
"Every little bit." he nodded.
"D-do you remember your...family?" I wondered quietly.
He looked down for a moment. Then he squeezed his eyes shut. "Yeah."
"I'm sorry." I squeaked.
He opened his eyes and tried to smile. "Don't be. You saved me, Bridgette. I can remember you. That's worth it, I promise. ...There's just one thing."
"What?" I wondered, wide-eyed.
A smirk came over his features. "You had to admit to loving me when I didn't remember you?"
I blushed. "Let's just get you back to Luke's, okay?"
"Not until you say it to me." he laughed, pulling my face to his so our noses were touching.
"Ashton." I whined with a small laugh.
"Please." he begged as he locked his puppy dog eyes with mine. I love you.
My smiled widened. "I love you too."
"Ha!" he shouted. "I win!"
"You're a dork." I told him, playfully shoving him away.
"Yeah, but we both know you wouldn't trade me for the world, right?"
I snorted. "I'm not going through that shit to get you back again."
He chuckled, kissing my lips. "Alright, let's get back to Luke's. Surprise 'em."
"Not much of a surprise, Irwin," Michael smirked from the corner, his arms crossed over his chest. "Welcome back, mate."
