19. Rescue Mission

We had a few hours before the house would be torn down so we had to find Michael and Luke. However, Mikey wouldn't respond to either Calum or me.

"Michael this is serious!" Calum groaned in the middle of Michael's yard. Actually, I still wasn't even sure if it was his house. "We need you to help us with Ashton. Michael! Mikey, can you stop?"

Calum turned to face away from me and began talking to something there. I assumed it was Michael and he was just making himself invisible to me.

"Michael, please stop," I pleaded. "I didn't even do anything mean to you, did I?"

"You don't remember what happened before you passed out?" his voice came from behind me. I whipped my head around but he wasn't there. "You told me to stay the hell away from you for the rest of your life. That's what I've been trying to accomplish here."

"Mikey," I sighed, running my fingers through my hair. "I didn't mean it and you know it. It was just that everything finally hit me and I just freaked out, alright? I'm sorry. Stop being an ass and help your friend out. Please."

He appeared in front of me, his arms folded and his sunglasses on his face. At least he had reason because of the bright sun. "Convince Luke and I'll help you out."

Calum and Michael did walk me to Luke's house, but I requested I go in by myself. I wanted to talk to him one on one. If I said the same thing to Luke that I'd said to Michael, I'd feel like a bitch. He finally had a new friend and then I probably ruined it by saying something offensive that made him get upset. No wonder he hadn't cleaned his house.

I walked in to see it was a little dustier than before. I sighed, walking up the stairs to Luke's room. He still wasn't in there, but his ball was resting on his bed instead. I laid down on it, taking the ball and tossing it in the air like Luke did.

"I'm assuming they've been keeping you up to date," I said, just assuming Luke was listening from inside the room somewhere. "The fact Ashton's trying to commit suicide. Partly because of me. I did act like a huge bitch towards him. And you and Michael and Calum, too. You just wanted a new friend and I probably told you the same thing I told Mikey. I completely understand why you want to ignore me now. But you should know that I actually do miss you, Luke. You're one of my best friends, dead or alive. Having a mental breakdown isn't much excuse for telling someone to stay away from you forever. You know, before that all happened, I was really excited to live with you. I understand if you take the offer back. However, I won't understand if you're going to continue to hide from me instead of helping us get Ashton out of his house before he gets killed. That would be just as heartless as me telling you to stay away from me - probably even more heartless."

I threw the ball in the air again but this time, it didn't come down. It stayed there for a moment before it was dropped again. I smiled as Luke's form appeared, laying on the ceiling. I tossed the ball up again and he caught it with one hand before letting it fall back into my hands. He bit at his lip, playing with his piercing.

"I'll accept your apology," he told me. "Only because you were sincere about it and I saw how upset you've been the passed couple of days. But I don't see why you need my help."

"I don't really need it that much," I smirked. I got up and walked over to his bureau, putting the ball on it. "I just wanted you to talk to me again."

He chuckled, pushing himself off of the ceiling and landing on his bed. He got up and walked over to me. "Just go save your boyfriend."

I got on my toes to kiss his cheek before quickly leaving his house and meeting up with Calum by the front door. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah." I nodded.

"Let's get going then." he grabbed my hand and led me back to the sidewalk where Mikey waited for us, his sunglasses on his face.

"So?" he quizzed.

"Luke and I are friends again so can we go?" I groaned. "May I remind you one of your best friends is going to die soon."

Michael sighed. "You're forgiven."

With that, he led the way back to Ashton's where my car was still parked. We began walking to the door when I found myself turning and walking the other way, not knowing why I wanted to.

"No," Calum said, grabbing my shoulder and spinning me back around. He looked to the house. "Ashton, don't do that! We want to help!"

No response.

Michael walked up to the door and banged on it with his fist. "Ashton, open up!"

Silence.

I sighed and pushed passed Calum, going up to the door myself. Michael stepped out of the way to stand by Calum. I knocked lighter than Michael did. "Ashton? It's me. Please open the door. I want to talk to you."

Still, nothing.

"I...," I sighed. I didn't want to sound too cheesy in front of Michael because I knew he'd never let me live it down. But I figured, fuck it. I'm not letting Ashton kill himself. "Ashton, I miss you."

The door opened a crack, his green eyes boring into mine. I saw his thoughts for that split second he stared at me. I miss you.

I heard the two boys behind me begin to walk towards the door. Ashton pulled the door open wider to yank me in before shutting and locking the door again. I looked around the small, familiar house. There was no trace of his family but I knew they were around somewhere. I looked to Ashton who was still facing the door, his back to me.

"Ashton?" I asked in a quiet voice. I lightly touched his back. "Ashton, please talk to me."

No response. He didn't even move.

"I'm sorry I ignored you. I was being childish," I admitted. "I completely forgot about your problems and was focusing on my unimportant ones. Please, just look at me."

He put his hands in front of him like he was playing with his shirt. When he turned, he had his glasses back on, though. He must've had them in a pocket on the jacket he was wearing. He walked passed me to the living room, not saying a word. I followed swiftly behind him, still trying to get him to talk to me.

"Ashton, this place will be gone in like, an hour," I informed, although after I said it, I figured that wasn't the smartest thing to tell him. "What I mean is you can't stay in here. You said this would be the best thing for your family."

He wouldn't look at me or say anything. He just sat on the couch, kicked his feet up on the coffee table, and crossed his arms as he stared at the blank TV screen. I groaned, sitting down on the couch next to Ashton. I scooted next to him, pleading for him to even acknowledge my existence.

"Ashton, please!" I was yelling now. "I'm not losing you, okay? Get out of this house now!"

More ignoring.

"ASHTON, TALK TO ME! LOOK AT ME! SOMETHING!" I cried.

"Why?" he asked in a monotone voice, still not looking at me. Talking, though. That was a step. "What's the point anymore? My family will be gone in an hour. And you obviously didn't care."

"I'll tell you the point," I almost growled. I was practically sitting on him at this point. "There are four people who care so much about you and want you to stay alive. Calum told me that you think there's nothing to live for because of your family and the way I treated you but what happened the passed three days is nothing. Ashton, I need you to stick around for me.”

His head turned slightly to me. "What are you saying?"

I knew what he was hinting at. I sighed, knowing this would probably take me three steps back. "Ashton, I can't say I'm in love with you-"

"Forget it," he scoffed. "You might as well just leave before the crane gets here."

I gripped at his arm with both of my hands. "I'm not leaving you. If you're staying in here, so am I."

"So you don't love me but you're going to die with me."

"I didn't say I didn't love you. I said I'm not in love with you," I corrected. "And no one said I wasn't willing to see if I was."

"It's a little late for that."

I was desperate. I put my hands on both sides of Ashton's face and made him face me. I pulled his glasses from his face and looked him dead in the eye. He tried to look away but I held him there. I could see how scared and confused he was.

"You're not dying today." I stated.

He stopped trying to pull away from me. "Are you going to stop me?"

"If you're going to stay in here, yes."

His eyes locked on mine. Please stop me. Convince me to stay. Show me how stupid this is. Please help me, Bridgette, I don't know what to do.

I pressed my lips firmly to his. He put his hands on me, pulling me closer. Our mouths moved together as we sat in a loud silence. The kiss was only seconds but it was enough to get my heart racing. I knew his probably was too.

We pulled apart, his forehead leaning on mine. He wouldn't lock eyes with me again.

"Please come with me." I whispered.

He didn't respond, so I slowly got up, taking his hands in mine and bringing him up with me easily. I walked backwards, leading him back to the door. I got it unlocked and pulled Ashton out into the bright sun of the afternoon.
