6. Chapter Six

Chapter 6

I sat down in U.S. History next to Nelli, with Emily behind me. Mr. Robinson, the teacher, introduced our big history project for the semester. We were to do a presentation about someone important or that helped found the school. I don't know why it's a history project and not an English one because the schools not that old. Mr. Robinson called out our names and then told us our topic. My topics the founder, Miss Flora. Great, the new girl gets the founder. This ought to be boring. Mr. Robinson spent the rest of the class time talkin about the library books that had been reserved and what websites where cridible.

At lunch I sat with Nelli, Emily and some other girls from our floor. We talked about the history project and other classes until we heard glasses clinking.

"Oh boy," Jennifer, one of Nelli's friends, said under her breath.

"What?" I whispered.

"Just watch," she whispered back.

A group of blinds stood up and walked to the center of the room. They all had perfectly straightened hair and wore desginer cloths. They also had matching nose piercings. And they all carried a purse that marched there outfit.

"Clear the room," the one in the middle of the three shouted. All the teachers quietly walked out of the room, clearly acostumed to this and not willing to fight back.

"Now," the girl said looking pleased with herself. " Lets get started. I'm Heather. Most of you already knows and this routine, but for those of you who don't, this is where I choose my first boyfriend. So, if you don't want to watch then clear out."

Every boy, who wasn't on the list, and all the girls except the freshman class got up and left. Nelli, Emily, Jennifer and I went to the library to work on research for our history project. Since we had study hall right after lunch we just got an extra fifteen minutes of studying in. Except we didn't t do much studying. I had to know what was/went down in the café.

They all told me that the teachers don't fight back because Heather is, supposedly, the daughter of Miss Flora, and her dad signs the paychecks. After all the teachers leave and any students, Heather has the boys line up and one by one they try to impress her. Once she sees what they can do, she dismisses them and she heads upto her room the grab her notebook. She then heads off the class and makes her list of which guys goes with wich month. Once she has her list all planned out she calls the first guy and he's her boyfriend.

Once the examined everything we started studying. I opened a book that the librarian had chosen for me. Miss Flora, A History of Her Life.

Miss Flora married at age twenty-six. She had a daughter named Marcy. Although she was married she never used her husbands name, Springdale.

I shut the book. It couldn't be. I couldn't be her daughter. There has to be more than one Marcy Springdale in the world right? I decided to ask dad about it when he would call tonight.

"Hey dad," I said into the phone

"Hey sweetie. How has your first week been?"

"Fine. Dad I have a question . About mom."

"That's amazing sweetie but I've got great news! When you come Homs at Christmas you'll be staying and goin back to your old life! I've nearly fixed my problem and I've found a mother for you!"

"Dad. That's amazing"

"Yes I thought so. Now what was your question?"

"Oh um, is my mother Miss Flora? And is she dead?" The phone was silent for a couple if minutes.

"Listen, I've got to go. Talk to you tomorrow!" He ended the call. I put down my phone and leaned back into my desk chair.

I heard a knock on my door. I figured it was either Nelli or Emily. "Come in" I said. I turned around and saw Malcolm.

"Hello," he said

"Sorry but Nelli and Emily let me in."

"It's ok. I've just never had a guy in my room." Such a lie. I had Drew in my room many times before, but Malcolm is different.

"Oh well I need to tell you and ask you something. "

"And what's that?"

"You can't tell anyone."

"You know I won't," I promised. In the short time that I had been texting Malcolm we had become really good friends and learned to trust each other more than anyone else.

"Well...Marcy...I love you. I've been in love with you since I first met you."

"Um..." I didn't know how go respond to this. I guess the truth would be the best. "Um...well...I like you too."

"Really? Then will you go out with me?"

"No, because I can't date, I'm still getting over this guy balc home and I've barely been here. I've only known for a week."

"I understand. Would at least like to go get ice cream with me?"

"We can go off campus?"

"No there's a shop on campus. It's in what the kids call "The Food Court" because all the restaurants are there. Come on I'll show you."

"Ok." We walked out of my room and out of the dorm. We walked down the path, pass the science building and through Miss Flora's garden. We turned out of the garden to see a bunch of restaurants.

"Wow," I breathed.

"Yeah," Malcolm replied. We continued down a little hill toward the restaurants.

We walked into the ice cream shop and ordered. We found a booth and sat down. The waitress brought us our ice cream and we talked. Well it was more like tried to talk. We tried to talk about school, but that didn't last long, and neither of us wanted to talk about our family.

Once we finished our ice cream we walked back to our dorm.
