"Doniya has the turkey defrosted?" Aunt Tricia says rushing around the kitchen.
"Yes, I'll start getting it ready," Doniya says walking over to the sink.
Waliyah, Safaa Uncle Yasser and Zayn were cleaning the house, and Doniya, Aunt Tricia and I were making Thanksgiving dinner. We are having family over for Thanksgiving and there were a lot of things we have to do. Currently I have making the stuffing for the turkey that I had helped clean because Waliyah thought it was disgusting, which is kind of was.
"That's for the turkey," I tell Zayn who had stopped by for the tenth time to eat some of the stuffing.
"That piece was too big," he says getting Clorox wipes from under the sink.
"Sure," I say sarcastically, finishing making the stuffing.
"Aaliyha your turn!" Safaa yells coming down the stairs.
"Are the other rooms done?" I ask washing my hands in the sink.
"Yes, your room is the last one," Safaa says washing her hands. We switch spots me upstairs cleaning and her downstairs in the kitchen.
"Which bed sheet?" Zayn says holding up two bed sheets.
"The solid blue color," I tell him. "And I need clean pillow covers too."
"Which ones?" He asks putting the blue bed sheet on my chair.
"The blue covers that came with that sheet and the polka doted one," I tell him throwing the comforter and pillows on the ground. I finished making my bed and helped Waliyah put the things that were out of place back in their place.
"We're almost done," Uncle Yasser says as I flop down on the couch upstairs.
"I can't clean anymore. This house is too big. I want to sleep," I complain.
"Can I join you?" Waliyah asks flopping down on the coach next to me.
"Aaliyah, Waliyah, if you're going to make the pies you both better start now!" Aunt Tricia yells from downstairs. Waliyah and I look at each other smiling and run down the stairs. Whenever we made pie we'd end up eating the filling then getting yelled at my Aunt Tricia or Mum.
"Blueberry, pumpkin, apple filling," I say placing the cans of filing on the counter. "How many pies are we making?"
"Mum how many pies are we making?" Waliyah asks.
"Two of each," Aunt Tricia says placing the turkey in the oven. "The crust crumbs are on the top shelf."
Two hours later the turkey and the pies were in the oven, the house was clean, and Waliyah, Safaa, and I were pasted on the living room floor.
"Can we call a cleaning lady next time?" Safaa asks making Aunt Tricia, Zayn, Doinya, and Uncle Yasser laugh.
"Aaliyah what are you wearing?" Aunt Tricia asks sitting down on the couch.
"The long blueish greenish shirt with a peacock on the back," I tell her looking up from my spot on the floor.
"Could you bring it down so I can iron it?" Aunt Tricia asks. "You too, Waliyah and Safaa." We get up and go upstairs to get our clothes.
I give Aunt Tricia my dress and take a quick shower. I straighten my hair and stuck a black blow in it to keep it out of my face. I put on some lip gloss and I am done. I go and see if Safaa is ready so I can do her hair.
"Safaa sit still," I tell her finishing off the waterfall braid. "Doniya do you have hairspray?"
"Give me one second," Doniya says spraying hairspray in her hair. I lightly spray Safaa's hair and put a small barrette at the end.
"Done," I say putting the hairspray back.
"Thank you," Safaa says looking in the mirror at her hair.
"Picture time!" Zayn says coming into the room wit his phone.
"They're here!" Safaa sequels when the doorbell rings after taking a few pictures. Waliyah and Safaa race downstairs and Zayn follows close behind.
"Ready Aali?" Doniya asks turning around noticing that I haven’t moved from my spot in front of the mirror.
"It's the first one," I whisper staring at my reflection.
"It's going to be ok," Doniya says coming over and hugging me. "Everyone is going to be here, Dadi (grandma) and Dada (grandpa) are coming, Aarosa is coming and so is Jawaad from college and we all know how much he loves telling his terrible jokes. We're going to have lots of fun."
"I can't wait to hear his new jokes," I say sarcastically making Doniya laugh a little.
"C'mon everyone is waiting for us downstairs," Doniya says fixing my hair a little bit. I nod and we head downstairs.
"There they are," Aunt Tricia says once she see's us coming down.
"Assalamualaikum (hello)," Donnie and I say going around and meeting our family that had arrived.
"Aali!" Aarosa screams attacking me in a hug.
"Hey," I say going around hugging Jawaad and all my other cousins. We sit around laughing and talking until it was time to eat. The grownups sit at the table and the rest of us sit on the living room floor.
"Who wants to go first?" Uncle Rayan asks. Every year we would go around say what we were thankful for. We did it for fun and then prayed to Allah thanking him for everything he has done for us.
"Dad why don't you go first," Uncle Yasser says to Dada.
"I am thankful for the food we have and the wonderful family I have," Dada says. We go around listing to what everyone is thankful for.
"I am thankful for everything that I have, and for my talented son, and four beautiful daughters," Uncle Yasser says.
"Four?" I ask since everyone was a little confused. He had three daughters unless if he was counting Zayn as Veronica. And Zayn made a gorges girl; he looked great in heels and a skirt.
"Yes, Doniya, Waliyah, Safaa, and you," he says smiling. "You're our daughter, you have always been." Everyone starts saying awe and I get up from my spot and go and hug him.
"Thank you for everything," I whisper to him.
"You're welcome," he says giving me a kiss on the forehead. Once we have all said what we are thankful for we got our food. I usually had a long list of things that I would say, but this year I just said I am thankful for everything. I guess I surprised everyone by saying only five words, because when my turn came everyone had been ready for a long list, a really long list. After dinner we all spread out the boys in the game room, and the girls in either Safaa, Doniya, or Waliyah's room. I ended up being in Waliyah's room. I slip out after a while and go to my room to get my phone. I scroll through my phone and stop in the 'D' section. I tap the first name on the list and put my phone against my ear.
"Sorry, I missed your call. Please leave your name and number and I will get back to you as soon as possible," Dad's deep voice says. The phone beeps telling me that I could leave a message now. I wait for a while before saying anything.
"Hi Dad," I mange to say without bursting into tears. "Happy Thanksgiving, I miss you." I hung up and scrolled through my contacts until I find the name I am looking for.
"Sorry, I missed your call. I'll get back to you soon," Mum's soft, sweet voice echoed in my ear.
"Hi Mum, Happy Thanksgiving. I miss you a lot," I say before hanging up. I'd sometimes call Mum and Dad to hear their voice again, it was the only thing I had of them and never wanted to forget it. I wipe the few tears that had slipped down my face and headed back to Waliyah's room.
