When I Fell

Falling in love is tricky. There are so many movies and books that make it seem so easy and passionate and right but in the real word it's confusing and exciting and fun and frustrating and in the real world, things get in the way.

Chris' point of view

I don't sleep at all. Why I just enjoyed sitting with my best friend's little sister watching a trashy reality show and stuffing myself with cookie dough, I'll never know. It's not usually the kind of thing I like doing, I like parties and seeing my friends and going out to the beach. I've never been one for TV or nights in or even junk food really, but that was fun.

Jonas wakes up at 10 am and frowns at me.

"How long have you been awake?" he asks, still confused and half asleep.

"Couple of hours." I say. It's easier than telling him I didn't sleep. I don't know why.

"Where'd you go last night?" he asks. "I woke up for a minute and you weren't there."

I don't want to tell him. It's not scandalous or anything, I just feel like it was this thing between Ruby and I, not something to share with anyone else, however stupid that sounds. Plus, I'm not sure how pleased Jonas would be if he knew I had a crush on Ruby. She's only a couple of years younger but he really treats her like his baby sister when it comes to caring about her. He's told me before that he'll hate any boy who asks her out, just because that's what big brothers are for. Maybe it could work one day but now isn't the right time.

"To get a drink." I say. It's not a lie, exactly. I decide to change the subject. "You coming to Ella's party tonight."

"Of course." he says, grabbing his laptop. "You?"

"Of course." I say and then I hesitate. "You bringing your sister along tonight?"

"I would, I want her to make some friends, but she won't come."

"Why?" I ask.

"Because, she's such a dork." he laughs, fondly. "She doesn't want to go and dance at a party and meet boys, she wants to sit by herself and read Wuthering Heights and watch reality shows."

"Maybe if you just asked her again, she'd say yes."

"Why do you care?" he asks.

"I... I don't, I'm just saying, if you want her to go then you can probably get her to go." I say, pretending to look at my phone so he doesn't see my cheeks glow red. He raises an eyebrow and then sighs.

"Ruby!" he yells.

"Yeah?!" she yells back.

"Get in here!"

I hear her sigh heavily and she comes into the room in a bath robe, her hair wet. We smile at each other for the briefest of moments before I look back to my phone and she sighs at Jonas.

"What do you want?" she asks.

"Do you want to come to a party tonight?" he asks in a tone of voice that makes it sound like he already knows the answer.

"Not really no." she says.

"You need to make friends eventually and Mom says..."

As Jonas blabbers on about all of these things she's probably heard a million times before, I glance up at her and catch her eye. I smile hopefully at her, mouthing 'Please?' and she smiles back before looking at Jonas.

"Fine, I'll go."

Jonas looks at her, surprised. "You will?"

"Yeah." she says and leaves the room.

"I told you so..." I say, raising my eyebrows casually.

"Shut up." he throws a pillow at me and we both laugh.
