During volunteers, Emma said she'd talk to the others. Daymien and I worked at the table, taking stock while Terrance and his clowns were goofing around. "Carla!" I call.
She turns, walking over. "Yeah, what's up?"
"Don't they understand the word volunteer? I mean, it's right in the name of the class they signed up for."
"Charlie, let's get real. It's Terrance."
"Yes, it is Terrance. And he's doing what Terrance does. Getting on my nervous, and I can't take it, so just quiet them down a bit, please? Just so Day and I can work?"
She turns around with a huff, "I'll try..."
I turn back to the work in front of me to see a smiling, quirked browed Daymien. "What...?"
"Day?" he asks, amused.
I stutter, shocked. Where did that come from and why had I called him that? "I...um..."
"It's okay, I kind of like it." He smirks, winking, "It's cute, like you."
I blush, shove him, giggle loudly, all that girl stuff. Everyone was probably looking at us, but I didn't care. I was having a carefree time for the first time in probably forever. And he had called me cute! Him, Daymien, called me, cute! I couldn't believe it, I was over the moon! Until I turn and crash into someone, ruining it.
Terrance leans against the wall, watching me, smirking. I cross my arms. "I'm sorry, what do you want?"
"Just wanted to tell you that I can't wait for our date." He winks, turning to walk away. Daymien stiffens at the word, going still and angry.
"Wait" I call, confused. What was he talking about? Then I remembered, algebra. "Hey Daymien, how good are you at algebra?"
"Good, I guess" he replies sulkily. Well, at least he replied.
"Good enough to tutor somebody?"
He smiles at my meaning. "Uh, yeah. I could totally tutor somebody. Do you know someone who would be interested?"
I flash him a bright smile. I splay my arms, bowing dramatically "I'm your girl!" I beam. "Sorry Trace, but I will no longer be needing your assistance."
"And what are you going to tell your parents that you are doing?" I sink at the realization that I might actually need him for something after all.
"I'll tell them I'm with Carla, problem solved."
"Except they know I'll be leaving right after school to go on a business trip with my parents."
"Carla, can't you tell them it was canceled or something?"
"Nope, I can't, sorry." Then she walks away, leaving me stuck. I turn to Terrance, glaring suspiciously.
"Fine, what do you want?"
"Go on a date with me. A real one."
I laugh, "Not a chance!"
"Ah, come on? Just one?"
I was stumped. He was begging? And he was actually trying to ask me out?! "Terrance, why on Earth would you be asking out the girl you hate?"
"Don't you mean my future fiance?" He jokes. I pale. I cannot believe his humor. What is he trying to get at? "Oh, lighten up. I just thought that we could try to put the past behind us any maybe try to get along for once, for real. We don't even have to call it a date, just the two of us, hanging out together. Just like all those old times. Please?"
"And if I say no, then go back to asking you to tutor me instead?"
He leans in close, so only I hear what he says. "Then you won't get to hang out with your crush, and you might lose your only chance."
"I thought Terrance didn't share his girl?"
"Why not? I share Carla, don't I?"
"You know, she's better than I thought she is. I'm glad her and I are friends now."
"And me and you?"
"One step at a time." I turn to Daymien, giving him a smile and a sorry look. "So, about you tutoring me? Please?"
"It would be my pleasure" he smiles. My heart explodes then melts right then and there. How is he so beautiful and perfect? He pulls me into a hug, surprising me, but I don't hesitate to hug back, stepping on my tip toes to get as close as possible. Right there, that feeling, I knew this was meant to be.
