The Life of Leah Clearwater (Book 2)

Have you read The Stories of Leah Clearwater yet? If not, you'll need to read that first. This is book 2 in the Leah Clearwater stories. It takes place roughly six years after the end of Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer. We wondered what had happened, once the Volturi were confronted. Well six years later, Leah, and Hunter are together. Living in Port Angeles, fulfilling their careers. Hunter is a teacher, and Leah a nurse; how could things get any better? Well there's much more to the story, and that includes the Storm that arrives. I've had the lovely addition of my co-author Ms. Ara Storm. She's my lovely beta, and editor as well.

16. Chapter 15 - Imprint isn't your typical relationship word.

I woke up, and was in a different room. "Relax you're in your room. Your mom, and Charlie went back to grab some dinner. Hunter went with them." Esme stroked my hair. I blinked a few more times. Rosalie stepped in quietly, carrying a paper bag. Emmett walked in behind her, "How's my wolf girl doing?" I shrugged. "A little disoriented. She just woke up." Esme spoke softly. Emmett smiled, "Cheeseburger sub. Ketchup, mayo, mustard, hold the garden." I smiled, "You're good." He nodded. Esme moved the bed carefully to help me sit up. Rosalie opened the container for me. I ate quietly, enjoying the taste. My eyes closed as I devoured the sub.

Once I finished I leaned back. Rosalie cleaned up. Emmett stood beside the bed, "Nessie pestered to come. The rest of the family is at your house.” I looked up at him, “Where is she?” He looked at me, “You can’t hear her anymore?” I shook my head, “Nope. I have average hearing now.” Emmett laughed, “She’s pacing the waiting area. Please let her come in.” I agreed, “She has to be easy ok. I’m still really sore.” He nodded, and left to retrieve her. Esme looked at me, “You’re going to be ok. It’s scary I know.” I nodded, “Just some hard decisions to make. Rosalie looked at me, “Could you adopt, or foster?” I shrugged, “Adoption can take a long time, and a lot of money. Fostering, well it’s not what I could do. They’re with you for a short time, then gone. It would be continuously ripping my heart, and soul out. I can’t do that.” With that, the topic of children had ended.

Renesmee walked in timidly. “Uncle Emmett said I could hug you. He said, you’re really sore.” I nodded, “Unfortunately yes, so a light hug.” She did just that. “So are you ok?” I shrugged, “I’ll be ok. Nothing they can really do. My doctor will monitor it. Now I have to sit down, and talk to your uncle.” Renesmee nodded, “You can consider me a daughter if you’d like.” Her soft smile, and angelic face made me tear up. “Thank you hun.” She was just looking around the room. “Renesmee Carlie Cullen what’s wrong?” I called her full name, in order to pull her attention back to me. That’s when she started to cry. I moved as best as I could, and patted the bed, “Come sit with me hun.” She sat beside me, and laid her head against me. “I’m sorry. I just feel bad.” I wrapped my arm around her shoulder wincing, “Listen this is natural.” She choked, “You want kids, and can’t now.” I inhaled deeply, “It may be a while. That’s ok.” I coughed a little, and gasped. Esme gently pushed the pillow against my stomach, “Easy. Deep breath in.” I inhaled, and exhaled, trying to regulate my breathing. Renesmee went quiet. Emmett smiled, “She dozed off.” I pulled the blanket over her. “She’s exhausted. Let her sleep. Even if it’s for the night.” That’s what she did. I smiled and held her, and slowly fell asleep myself.

I was discharged the next day, and brought home by Carlisle, and Esme. The house was bustling. Things were freshly cleaned. Fresh flowers in different rooms. Scented candles were in the air. Alice stood smiling, as I walked in with Hunter’s help, “Surprise!” I smiled, “Alice it looks, and smells great.” I spoke softly, as I walked in. Hunter stopped holding onto me, “Downstairs, or Upstairs.” I looked at the stairs, “Sunroom couch please.” Hunter smiled, and escorted me out there. I laid down on the couch, exhaling rather loudly. Hunter carefully adjusted my pillows, and covered me up. “You ok out here?” I nodded. He sat down on the coffee table, taking my hand in his. “We need to talk. I know our family is here.” I looked at him, “June. We can marry then. Honeymoon. Then work on getting pregnant. No birth control. Please I can’t jeopardize this. Even if we have one child.” Hunter looked at me, “Ok, but I hate seeing you in pain.” I closed my eyes, “Adoption is so expensive.” Hunter spoke softly, “Then we can do foster care to adoption.” I started to object, but he spoke up, “Right now, rest. We’ll see what legal resources we need. What this all entails.”  I closed my eyes, and gently rested my hand on my stomach.

I closed my eyes, and could hear soft talking from the kitchen, “She’s determined to have her own child. The pain she’s putting herself through.” Thud! Hunters fist hit the counter. “This is the first time this has happened. So now she’s on pain medication, and being closely watched. It will take some time. She’s a fighter.” Carlisle’s voice was calm. Then Hunters voice thundered, breaking the quietness, “She’s 26. She’s worked her ass off to get where she is. She’s never asked for help. Now, now she’s desperate for help. She won’t admit it. How can I stand here and watch my fiancé kill herself.” He raked his fingers through his hair. Emmett, and Jasper came out to the kitchen, and brought him to the table. Jasper relaxed the room, and Emmett kept Hunter from leaving the house. Carlisle sat down, “Leah Clearwater is the most stubborn wolf I’ve ever met. She never backs down from a fight. You’re absolutely correct on that. She’s afraid to admit when she’s scared. She won’t kill herself. I saw that. If she know’s it could harm her, or the baby; when it’s time she won’t risk it.” That was the first time I ever heard Hunter become angry. Then it happened, his voice broke, and he was crying. “I want to spend my life with her. She’s my soulmate.” I slowly fell asleep, with tears streaming down my cheeks. I was scaring the hell out of him, and I felt like giving up today.

I came around as sunset approached, “Hi there.” Alice was curled up in a chair with a sketch pad. “Beautiful room you have here. I hope I didn’t wake you.” Her bright eyes, and wide smile were infectious. I stretched slowly, and shook my head, “No you didn’t. I’m just needing the bathroom.” I pushed the blanket off, and sat up slowly. I held my stomach, as I tried to slowly get to my feet. “Hold onto me.” Alice was beside me. She was tiny, I couldn’t figure out how she could help me. She was tiny compared to me. I towered her. Her small frame, somehow supported me. She giggled, “Vampire strength. It’s ok. Plus you’re light to me.” I didn’t see her as a vampire, that’s why I had trouble with it. “I forget that. You’re human to me.” She smiled, “You’re a sister to me.” She walked with me carefully to the bathroom. Once I was done, she helped me back to the couch in the living room. The family was spread out. Rosalie walked over, “May I join you?” I nodded, and she sat beside me. Nothing was said, but she just held my hand and smiled. At that moment, it was solidified, these people were not monsters. They were my family.

Bedtime rolled around. I was able to get off the couch with little help. I started up the stairs. I’d only made it to the third step, before I had to sit down on the stairs. “Baby let me carry you ok.” I looked up at him, my eyes were red. My emotions were raw. I just didn’t have the fight in me tonight. I was exhausted, and in pain. He gently moved, and scooped me up in his arms. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and laid my head against his chest. He took each step carefully, slowly. He moved with such precision, making sure not to jostle me. Once we were our bedroom, he set me down on my feet. He pulled back the covers, and helped me lie down, then covered me up. He changed into his own pajama’s. Tonight it was just a pair of flannel bottoms, and a white t-shirt. He climbed in beside me, and placed a pillow against my stomach. “If you need anything, wake me up ok?” I nodded, and yawned. I felt the weight on my eyelids, and mumbled, “I love you.” He smiled kissing my forehead, “I love you too.”

Hunter woke up before me, and headed downstairs to have some breakfast. “Hello. I’ve made breakfast for whomever wanted it.” Esme smiled. “Amazing Jacob, and Seth left some for the rest of the people who’d like to eat.” Bella smiled. Hunter smiled, “Thanks just coffee right now.” The tense question everyone wanted to know? He leaned against the counter, holding his mug, “She’s asleep. She stirred, and was quite uncomfortable. Anyways she wants to get married next year. She’s decided on June. She’s refusing any kind of treatment. We’re going to look into fostering a child, then seeing if we could adopt them.” My mom smiled, “That would be great.” Hunter nodded, “I don’t care if we have a biological child. I would just like to have a family with her.” Esme nodded, and she felt bad. “We talked before her nap yesterday afternoon. She won’t elope, and wants to do stuff in order.” Sue nodded, and looked at Charlie. He shrugged, unsure of what to say.

Three weeks had passed, and I was just getting back to work. Sam watched me out of the corner of her eye. Carlisle just happened to be working up here the week I returned. I was a little sore from time to time, but I managed. I had a child who didn’t like me, for some reason and took a kick. I quietly left the room, and shut the door. I walked quietly to the supply closet, and felt the tears fall. “Hun?” Sam knocked on the door. “Hey it’s Samantha, can I come in.” I opened the door, and she slid in through a narrow opening. “Hey sweetie.” She shut the door and walked over. “How bad is it?” I let out a long breath I’d been holding in. “Let me look ok.” She carefully touched my stomach. “Oh that’s tender.” She nodded, “Listen go home and relax. You have two hours left on your shift.” I shook my head, “I need to work.” She narrowed her eyes at me, “You’re going to kill yourself. I know Carlisle is here, and I will have him send you home. I can call your fiancé if you prefer.” I exhaled, “Either of them is fine actually. I walked today because it was nice out. She shook her head smiling, “Leah, and take it easy. Those don’t fit together well in a sentence do they.” I smiled, “Nope.” She walked out with me, to the nurses station where I sat down. I called Hunter, and he was on his way to pick me up. “Heading home early?” Carlisle was standing beside me. “Yeah. I’m just tired, and still getting back into the swing of things.” He patted my shoulder, “Take it easy. We’ll see you this weekend?” I shrugged, “I’m not sure if I’m up for the ride.” He nodded, “Well we can come visit, if it’s ok.” I smiled, “We could do that. Let me get back to you on that.” Hunter called to let me know he was outside. I said my goodbyes, and left for the night.

Once we were home, I dropped my bag by the stairs. “Go upstairs, and change. If you can, take a shower, and just get into bed babe. I will bring dinner up to you.” I nodded, “I think just pj’s and maybe the couch.” He looked at me, “Don’t be killing yourself, going up and down the stairs.” I quietly walked up, and changed. I went to pick up my clothes off the floor, and moved to fast. “God dammit.” I leaned over on the bed. “Baby you could have left them.” He was helping me into bed, before I knew it. “I thought it was supposed to be better by now.” Hunter positioned a pillow in front of my stomach, once again. “Baby he said, it will start feeling better by now. You’re not completely healed, so take it easy.” I nodded, feeling the tear slide down my cheek. Hunter laid down behind me, and held me gently. “I promise we’ll be ok. If you take some time off, we’ll be ok.” He kissed my neck, and cuddled me. “Hunter I feel like everything is just falling apart.” He sighed, “Baby people have all kinds of things come up in life. This is just a speed bump. We’ll take things a little slower as we drive.”

Friday afternoon rolled around, and I was lounging on the couch. I’d showered, and dressed, and braided my hair. I brought a pillow, and blanket. A knock on the door, “Hello?” Travis was here. “He’s not home yet.” I called out. Travis walked in, and sat down, “He sent me over. I brought lunch. I was told a grilled, chicken caesar salad, but with ranch dressing. He also said a cup of Wedding Soup.” I nodded, “Yeah thanks.” I sat up slowly, holding my stomach moving. “Still sore huh?” I nodded, “Yeah it’s tolerable. I over did it at work.” He smiled, and set up a small folding table in front of me, “Lunch is served, and relax.” I quietly ate the soup, and then laid back down. “No salad?” I shook my head, “Basin please.” I curled up under the blanket. He removed the food, and table. “Basin.” He set it on the floor. “Just in case. I’m nauseated easily.” He smiled, “Anything else I can do?” I hated to need help, but I was honest. “Laundry needs to be done.” Travis smiled, “I’m on it. Take a nap ok.” He patted my shoulder, and disappeared. I did just that. The afternoon court shows droned on, and I fell asleep.

I woke up a little while later, and I heard talking. “She behaved herself today no worries. She didn’t wake up at all.” Travis was still here. “Thanks for bringing her lunch. She’s been just getting an appetite again. I’m glad. She’s spent the past three weeks laying on the couch, and sleeping. She needed it. We see Dr.Martin Monday.” Travis smiled, “I hope it’s good news.” Hunter nodded, “It’s an ultrasound follow up. She’s been praying all day, and night when she’s awake. It’s like whispering. I’ve been following her. After she’s gone to sleep, I pray for good news.” Travis nodded, and took a sip of his beer. “So I was hoping you’d be my best man? June’s the wedding. Maybe you could do our photography also?” Travis grinned, “Oh Bro that’s amazing. I have a shadow, and she’d love to do the photography of your ceremony.” Hunter smiled, “That would be great. We can talk to Leah, once she’s up. She’ll be happy. She’s looked at dresses online.” Travis grinned, “See that day when she bumped into you, it was love at first sight.” Hunter smiled, “Then she imprinted on me, and made it official.” Travis swallowed, “Imprinted?” Hunter looked at Travis, “You know. Perfect mates. Exact fit.” Hunter tried to cover what he’d let slip. Travis decided now to duck out. “Listen, I’d love to stay later; but I have an early shoot tomorrow.” Hunter nodded, “I understand. See you later. Call me when you’re free.” Travis nodded, setting his empty bottle on the counter, and quietly left.

While driving home, he called his mom. “Hello Travis.” He spoke quickly, “How much do you know about dad’s roots. His heritage and such?” She thought for a moment, “Quileute, and why Travis? What’s wrong?” He sighed, “Hunter said something tonight to me. His fiancé is from La Push. I just wondered because; well she can’t get pregnant. So they’re looking into adoption.” His mother spoke calmly, “There are no female wolves in the Quileute tribe. It’s only been the males that have been able to. There have to vampires around in order for the transformation to occur. Now you’ve not phased in how long? Six years?” Travis inhaled, and let out a long sigh, “Not since the Seattle serial killer. Then it stopped back in December of 2006.” She spoke again, “Why don’t you talk to Hunter about it. He’d never disown you. You’re his best friend.” Travis sighed, “Mom I can’t just say, “Hey I’m a wolf. Something freaky in my dad’s genetic makeup turns me into a giant wolf.” She spoke again, “What was exactly said? Maybe this could be a ice breaker.” Travis repeated it verbatim, “Then she imprinted on me, and made it official.” His mom went quiet, then spoke quickly seeking more information, “Did he say anything else?” Travis was replaying the conversation over and over in his head. “He tried to cover it up by saying, “Perfect mates. Exact fit.” His mom was mumbling in inaudibly, and Travis waited for her to say something, “He said she Imprinted?” she asked. Travis sighed, and pulled over to the side of the road, and put the car in park. “Yes mom. Imprint isn’t your common run of the mill word. Engaged, Proposal, Soulmate yes. Imprint isn’t.” The other end was quiet again. “Mom?” She spoke, “What’s her last name?” Travis groaned, “Clearwater. Her mom is Sue Clearwater. Her step-dad is Charlie Swan.” His mom inhaled sharply, “Is she related to Harry Clearwater?” Travis thought about it, “I think so. Sounds familiar. Her dad died of a heart attack. That’s about all I know.” His mother gasped, “Travis I’d rather talk in person. Can you come by my house now?” Travis straightened up, “Yeah not a problem. Mom what is it?” She swallowed, “I will see you when you get here.” With that she hung up without a goodbye. Travis tossed the phone onto the seat beside him, and pulled back onto the road, and started driving.
