~~ At first I wasn't really looking forward to the dance, but after Marshall asked to go with me, I could hardly wait. My inner-girl was very, very excited. Every day until the dance was mind-numbingly slow. Eventually, the day of the dance was here. All day girls were chattering about their dresses and guys were bragging about how hot their dates were. I tried to seem nonchalant but everbody's mood was infectious. At lunch Marceline complained loudly about not having a date.
"Ugh! I know I said I didn't care about this stupid ball but I'm gonna say it: I'm pissed because I don't have a date!" she wailed.
"Don't worry Marcy. I don't have a date either. We could go stag together." Flora said.
"Thanks," Marceline replied with a pout.
"You guys should be more excited!" Laura said.
"Easy for you to say, you and Fionna have dates." Marcy whined.
"I already told you guys! He's not really my date. We're just going as friends so that some creep won't mess with me." I said even though it was only half true. Marshall had sort of become my body guard since he asked me to the ball. We both verbally agreed to go "as friends", but I was still ecstatic and rumors started flying about Marshall and I. That didn't stop the guys from being total pigs. Even with Finn and Marshall on my side I still heard catcalls.
"Whatever! He's totally gonna be your boyfriend!" Laura squealed.
"What about you and Brad?" I asked, eager to change the subject.
"He dumped me." she said, suddenly very interested in her sandwich.
"WHAT?!" Marcy, Flo and I screeched in unison.
"he dumped me." she repeated. "I'll just go stag, like Flo and Marcy."
"What happened?" Flo asked.
"Yeah, two days ago you were all lovey dovey." Marcy chimed in.
"He wanted to go farther than I was willing to go." Laura said, still refusing to look up.
"Whatever. If he'd do that to me he isn't worth it." Laura said, her eyes about to overflow. We ate the rest of our lunch in silence.
"You look soooooooo cute!" Finn said in a valley girl voice. I'd gotten ready for the dance. My hair was curled and I was wearing the dress I bought at the mall.
"Like, thanks! So do you!" I said in the same tone. Finn was wearing a white button up over black jeans with a black tie. He looked too casual for this dance but it looked good on him so I didn't say anything.
"Are you sure about this guy?" Finn asked.
"For the last time. We're going as friends! He's annoying but he's cool." I said. Finn didn't know about my crush on Marshall.
"I find that hard to believe after the way he acted when I met him." he mumbled.
"Well then, I don't know what to tell you." I replied. I heard the doorbell ring.
"Fionna! Your date is here!" Mom yelled.
"Come on." I said to Finn.
"Aren't you gonna carpool with us?"
We walked down the stairs and I saw Marshall kissing up to my mom.
"Mrs. Murtons, this lemonade is fantastic!" he gushed.
"Oh MarshallLee, You're too nice! Please just call me Cake!" Mom said. I'd lost her to Marshall's smile.
"Hey Finn! Marshall greeted my twin like they were best friends. "Hey Fio--" He stopped mid-sentence. I blushed. Is there something on my dress?
"What?" I asked, putting my hands on my hips.
"Nothing. You look amazing." He breathed.
"Oh.?" I blushed some more. "You do too." I said lamely. And he did. His usual ensemble of a flannel shirt and jeans was replaced with a suit and tie and he looked incredibly sexy. I was resisting the urge to drool.
"Thank you." He said smugly.
"Well," Finn huffed. "Are we going or not?"
"Yeah. Let's go." Marshall said, Unfazed by Finn's attitude.
The dance committee did an amazing job decorating the Gym. The whole place looked like some kind of secret garden. I found Laura, Marceline, and Flora standing by a wishing well. Finn, Marshall, and I walked over to them.
"Where are your dates?" Finn asked obliviously.
"We don't have any." Marcy replied, punching him on the arm.
"We're the single ladies club." Laura said.
"So go away Fi, you no longer qualify." Flora joked.
"WAIT! Who dat!?" Laura yelled, pointing at the guy behind the snack table.
"That's Ms. Bubblegum's nephew." Marceline answered.
"He's hot! Come on Marcy, I need him to ask me to dance!" She said dragging Marceline to the punch bowl.
"Okay...?" I said.
"Um... Flora... do you wanna dance?" Finn asked Flo. I stared at him open-mouthed. Flora turned as red as her hair.
"Sure." She finally said. She took Finn's hand and they went to the dance floor.
"I did not see that coming." I said
Marshall Lee laughed. "So your brother's not totally lame."
"Oh shut up." I said, giggling.
"Do you want some punch?" He asked. Do you want to be responsible for cock-blocking Laura?" I replied.
"Absolutely." he said with his signature crooked smile.
I laughed out loud. "She'll hate us for this."
We walked over to the snack table. I gave Laura a smile while she gave me the death glare.
"Two please," Marshall said.
"Okay. Here you go." said the server.
"I heard your aunt is our science teacher, Ms. Bubblegum." I said.
"Yeah." He looked up at me and did a double take. Oh no. "So... what's your name?" he asked.
"Fionna." Marshall said, putting his arm around my waist and pulling me towards him protectively. Punch guy didn't get the hint.
"I'm Greg." he said with a spastic wink. Ugh. This is going to be a long night
