I heard a lot of yelling in the few moments before I opened my eyes. The first thing I began to understand was that I was no longer in that room. A wave of pure relief washed through me. The next thing I noticed was that none of the doctors had a British accent, instead their accents were undeniably American. The next thing I realized besides the doctors I wasn’t alone in the room. The last thing I noticed is what made me the most nervous… I couldn’t tell if Liam was here with me.
“Her heartrate is spiking” One person yelled.
“Get the doctor” Another one yelled.
“Rian relax everything is okay” a warm, familiar voiced whispered in my ear.
With that voice my eyes shot open. The bright room made it extremely hard for my eyes to focus, but the first thing I looked at was that person that told me to relax. His warm eyes were shining so brightly at me. That familiar smile began to become increasingly clearer. His genuine, warm smile was so prominent on his face. I could also see the subtle relief that was on his face.
“Aiden” I asked.
“Hey Rian. Melissa literally just left to go get us some coffee. She is going to flip” Aiden laughed as he picked up his phone and began texting away.
“That girl does love her coffee” I laughed as my heartrate began to beat at a normal pace.
“She sure does” Aiden said as he finished his text and then switched his focus to me.
While he looked exactly the same as he did before I left, but something was different. He was wearing the same cologne. His eyes were still that beautiful, deep blue that would hypnotize any female. His skin was still that wonderful tan color that I envied so much. I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. Aiden noticed I was staring at him and began to laugh.
“What are you staring at you weirdo” Aiden teased.
“I was trying to figure that out” I teased back.
“Jerk” Aiden laughed.
“If you must know the truth; I cannot put my finger on it, but something is different about you” I admitted.
“Well the only thing that has changed is that I finally got me a girlfriend” Aiden boasted.
“Really? So someone finally tamed the player” I laughed.
“Yeah. Someone did” Aiden smiled slightly.
Before I could ask another question Melissa bolted through the door, and to no one’s surprise she had three coffees in hand. Unlike Aiden, Melissa hadn’t changed a bit. Her blonde hair was pulled into a top knot, her blue eyes gleaming as she stared at me. She shoved the tray of coffee at Aiden, which caused him to grunt and place it on the table on the other side of the room. While Aiden was putting the coffee down Melissa stole his spot next to me. Her hands instantly latched onto mine and that was when those tears began to flow. Seeing Melissa crying broke my heart, but it also reassured me that not all my friends hated me as much as Jordyn and Ashley.
“Hey I am okay. Don’t cry Mel. You unfortunately have to deal with me next semester” I laughed.
“Oh Rian you don’t understand how close we were to losing you. The doctors told us your chance of survival was so small. I just couldn’t wrap my head around losing you” Melissa sobbed.
Part of me felt bad about wanting to be with my parents and not returning to the life I had here, but I know once I told Melissa what happened she’d believe me and understand.
“I am alive” I smiled at her.
“I am so happy that you are” Melissa cheered as she gently squeezed my hand.
I had so many questions for Melissa that I had no idea where to begin. I wondered why I was in America rather than England. Where is Liam and is okay? Did they ever catch those two dumbasses that kidnapped and tortured me? I looked around the room and saw all these cards, flowers, and stuffed animals. Who did all this? There were too many cards to be just from Melissa and Aiden. Who else cared that deeply about me to write me a card? Another semi-important question I had was what day it was? I know in the realm of what matters and doesn’t it was probably in the “doesn’t matter” column, but I just wanted to know.
“Where am I” I asked, figuring I would start with some of the easier, lighter questions.
“You are in Raleigh. Welcome home” Aiden said cheerfully, but Melissa looked down and away from me. I knew something was wrong. I could feel it in the pit of my stomach.
“Oh. How long have I been here” I asked.
“Only like four days. School has yet to start so don’t worry about that” Melissa stated.
“Who are all these cards from” I continued.
“Directioners and people from school. It’s incredible how many lives you have touched without realizing it Ri” Melissa said as she looked at all the cards around the room.
Did I dare mention Liam? Do I truly want to know why Melissa and Aiden thought it be better for me to come back home? I guess I would have to figure it out eventually, but am I emotionally and physically strong enough to know the answer? Actually if anyone is strong enough that would be me. At least after everything that I had been through in the nineteen years that I have been alive.
I looked Melissa dead in the eyes and begin to ask, “Why am I not in England with Liam? Where is Liam? Is he okay?”
Melissa looked at me and took a deep breath.
