9. Tell Me a Lie

I didn’t want it to be Monday, I actually thought of never going back to school and join Kate’s lifestyle. That made me laugh, I would definitely prefer embarrassing myself over and over in front of Kayden than join Kate’s lifestyle. Talking about Kate, I hadn’t seen her in days. I got to the apartment and for the first time since I got here I used the keys Kate gave me the day she picked me up from the airport. It was never locked but, then again you never know what to expect from these girls.

I opened the door and was surprised to see that the house was clean and there were no drunk guys passed out in the living room. Maybe they went to someone else’s house.

“Mackenzie, weren’t you at your friend’s house?” Kate asked as she came out from the bathroom. For the first time she was asking about me.

“Hmm...yes, I was but I decided to come home early, Kate are you ok? You seem off” I said, she really did look bad, but not in the hung over kind of way, it was different, Kate sat in the armchair.

“You can tell me anything” I sat beside her.

“You can’t help with this” She said.

“You won’t know unless you tell me, I am part of your family know, I’ll help you” I answered.

“Mac… I’m… I’m pregnant” Kate said, and started sobbing. I didn’t know what to tell her.

“What are you going to do? Do you know who the father is?” I asked.

“Obviously I don’t know who the father is, haven’t you noticed the way I live? I’m going to have an abortion or give it up for adoption. It’s the best solution” Kate said, calming down a bit.

Her answer bothered me, I stood up and started talking to her loudly.

“Kate, that’s not a solution. What are you going to do once you get rid of the baby anyway? Go back to the way you were less than twenty four hours ago, just to end up as a drug addict in the streets, or a prostitute?  You’re not going to live from your parent’s money your whole life. Listen to yourself, you sound like a sixteen year old, you’re twenty three Kate. Most of the women your age are engaged or living with their boyfriend not with a pair of whores, or if they’re single they at least have a decent job, or they’re finishing school. That life that is growing inside of you is your opportunity to change, you have everything to maintain a child” I knew that I was being harsh, but someone had to make her understand. I looked at her and she lowered her gaze, I sat next to her and hugged her.

“Mac, I know you haven’t had it easy, and just like you, I’ve always dreamed of starting a new life, having a husband, and kids, a family. The difference is that you have a new life. And let’s face it, even if I do keep the baby, everyone thinks I won’t be a good mother.” Kate said.

“The only person who will be able to teach you and decided if you are a good mother or not, is your baby. You managed to keep a sixteen year old girl alive, without having any experience. If you ask me you should kick those girls you call friends out, look for new friendships and be with someone who wants to be with you not because of your money but because of you” She hugged me.

“Thanks Mac, I need to go fix some things” She smiled and walked over to the door “I hope you liked the way I fixed your room, and the clothes. I never told you” That was the last think she said before the door closed. I can’t believe she had been the one who bought me all that stuff, she knew me.

I was happy for Kate, now that her life was going to change maybe mine would too. Since the house would be safer I wouldn’t be locked in my room anymore, I will be able to go to the kitchen without feeling that Kate’s friends would rape me any second. Not to mention that I will be able to invite my friends over.

Since it was still Saturday I decided that the first one to come over should be Jason. I sent him a message telling him to come over as fast as he could. Thirty minutes later there was a knock on the door, I opened it and it was Jason, in pajamas, I was glad, because I was too.

“Hey baby girl” Jason said.

“What was that?” I asked laughing.

“You’re like my little sister, my baby girl”

 “Don’t be ridiculous”

“Get used to it, that’s what I’ll be calling you from now on” I rolled my eyes at him and laughed. We went to my room and I put some music on, Jason was deep in thought. Just seconds later I realized that I had put on the record Kayden had given me, and I remembered it was his band playing.

“Wait a second. Mac, those are our songs and the only person who has them is Kayden. Care to explain were you got them from, or what happened at Bec’s house?” Jason realized those were his songs, I wasn’t sure of I should tell him what really happened.

“I stole it” I shrugged.

“Mackenzie Jane Evans, what have I taught you all these years, stealing is bad, baby girl, you shouldn’t do it” Jason said playfully.

“Firstly, you’ve known me for less than six months, and secondly, my name is not Jane” I laughed.

“I know but your name is too short and boring to sound serious” He said.

“Oh, sure Jason” I said emphasizing that his name was much more short and boring that mine.

“Mac, my name is Jason Madison Carter” He said and I started laughing my ass off.

“You have a girl’s name!” I said between laughs.

“Hey, it’s my grandmother’s name… Oh, wait a sec” He said and started laughing too. “Ok, you’re not getting out of this so easily, where did you get it from Mac?” He stopped laughing and I did too. I settled on telling him everything that had happened with Kayden. He looked worried sometimes, but didn’t say anything until I finished talking. He sighed.

“Look Mac, Kayden is my best friend but you are too, so I have to tell you.” He sounded serious.

“Tell me what?” I was eager to hear what he had to say.

“Kayden isn’t the boyfriend type. He just gets a girl’s hopes up and then changes her for another one. I’ve seen it happen and I don’t want you to be one of those girls. I don’t want to see you get hurt. Trust me, you have to stay away from him. I can talk to him if you want me to” He offered, I didn’t know what to think about Kayden, but I did know what to say about Jason’s offer.

“No, please I think it’s best if you leave it” I answered.

“Alright, if that’s want you want.” I also talked to him about Kate and he was also happy for her.

After we talked we watched some movies and ordered Chinese food, at the middle of the third or fourth movie, I lost the count, Jason got a call, I looked at the clock and was surprised to see what time it was, we had been watching movies for a long time it was nearly eight. “Fuck, I forgot, I’ll be there in ten” He hung up and stood up.

“Mac, get ready and do whatever you need to do” He said hurriedly.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“Tonight, you will have the honor to hear the best band ever, Same Road, play” He winked and was about to exit the room so I could get changed, but I stopped him.

“Jason, you’re in pajamas” I reminded him.

“Do you have something I could wear?” He asked looking down at his clothes.

“I have clothes for Madison, not for Jason” I laughed, referring to his girl name.

“Real funny” He said heading over to Rachel’s room, one of Kate’s roommate’s or ex-roommate’s I’m not sure. I followed him.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“There has to be something in here” He said.

I went back to my room to get changed. I picked a blue sweater and a black skirt , I put some eyeliner and slipped my boots on before taking my phone and wallet and exiting the room. I left Kate a note and closed. Jason was already in the car waiting for me. I got in and was surprised to see that he was wearing black jeans and a red and black button up shirt.

“Where did you get that from?” I asked, obviously referring to the clothes.

“It was underneath one of the beds” He shrugged

“Jason, it was probably from one of the guys that was in the house, you don’t know the kind of stuff that they did with their clothes on. Seriously it’s disgusting” I said, but to be honest he looked decent.

“Shut up Mac, I’m capable of wearing one of your dresses right now, my legs would probably look stunning” He joked and I laughed. I loved this guy.
