When I got most of the makeup off I exited the bathroom and saw Kayden a few feet away from me and tried to avoid him hoping he wouldn’t see me.
“Hey, Mackenzie, wait” He said. Fuck. I looked down at my feet and kept walking. “Are you ignoring me?” I heard him say and stopped not turning around
“No” I lied.
“You’re doing it right now” He said and walked over to me.
“I’m sorry… it’s just that” I pressed my lips together.
“It’s just that what?” He asked. I took a deep breath.
“I haven’t known you for long and I’ve looked like a total fool” I said, not daring to look him in the eye from how nervous I was.
“Hey, don’t worry. That’s just your way of acting when you’re nervous. Everyone has one, for example, I act like a total jerk when I’m nervous”
Kayden said lifting my face up with his index finger. It was impossible not to get lost in his eyes. I was backed up against a wall, Kayden’s hands on the wall on either side of me.
“You look nice in that dress” He smiled looking down at me. I blushed “Thanks” I mumbled looking down at my fingers. When I looked back up, Kayden was extremely close to me, I thought we were going to kiss, it sounded tempting but something interrupted us.
“Kayden, we need some help to get the stuff on the stage” Luke said, not noticing what was about to happen, once he realized he said no more and went back to what he was doing.
“You should go help them” I said, once again looking down at my fingers.
“I think they can wait a few minutes” He said and I looked back at him just in time to see him leaning in. His soft lips made contact with mine briefly, it was a short kiss. He pulled away and kissed my forehead before going to help the guys up on the stage.
Moments like these confused me, I didn’t know what he wanted with me, but I sure as hell wanted to find out. I went back to where the girls were and it took a while for the boys to set up their stuff, so I got changed into my clothes again and we went for something to drink before they started playing.
They were really, really good. I had never heard them sing live, and they sounded even better than on the record Kayden gave me. Their songs were different from others, the lyrics weren’t just words written in paper; they were stories. It was music, real music. I saw how each one of the guys dominated their instruments. Jason played the drum as if there was no tomorrow. Tyler and Luke played guitar, or better said, the guitar played them. Matt sang with so much emotion, I’m sure that the whole room felt what he felt as he sang. Finally, Kayden. Normally, it is very difficult to read him; to know what he’s feeling, but right now anyone could read him like an open book. He looked happy and relaxed. He clearly enjoyed it.
“Mac, I need to go. My cousin wants me to babysit my niece tonight. Do you want me to drive you home?” Bec said, while reading a text. I didn’t want to go. I really wanted to stay until the last song they played.
“Thanks, Bec, but I’ll go with Jason” I said and she said goodbye before leaving in a hurry. A few minutes after Bec had left, they finished performing and the audience cheered for them. I waited at the table while they got down the stage and everything.
“You’re still here, baby girl?” Jason asked kind of confused, or astonished maybe? I ignored the horrible nickname he ha
d given me and answered his question.
“Yeah. I wanted to stay until you were finished” I explained.
“Wait, Bec already left?” He asked.
“Yes, why? Is there something wrong?” I asked, already knowing where this was headed.
“Well, Luke and I are supposed to take all the equipment to his place. Matt, Sky, Tyler and Sam left as soon as we finished, God knows where. But don’t worry. I’ll just tell Luke that I need to drop you off first” He said, scanning the room for Luke.
“No, don’t worry about me, Jason. I can walk back home” I stopped him. It honestly scared me to walk back home at this time of the night but I didn’t want to bother Jason on having to take me home. Jason opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by Kayden.
“Of course you’re not walking back home on your own. It’s dangerous. I can take you. Of course if your big brother allows me” Kayden offered, and we both waited for Jason my ‘big brother’ to say something.
“Alright, but you have to take care of her Kayden. Put your seatbelt on.” Jason warned us and I just rolled my eyes at him. He was trying to piss me off, but it wasn’t working.
“No, but seriously, text me when you get home” He ordered and I nodded.
He went to help Luke, leaving me and Kayden, alone, once again. I liked when Kayden was near Jason. He was so much more outgoing, and relaxed around him. It was the first time I had ever heard him joke.
We headed to the parking lot and to his car, which was a grey Audi. I didn’t expect less. Like I said before, Bec came from a wealthy family. Kayden opened the door for me. I got in and mumbled a thank you. He walked all the way around to the other side and slid in. The whole car ride he was relaxed. I on the other hand was nervous, and maybe a bit confused. Scratch that, I was really confused. It was silent, but thankfully the radio was on. He parked in front of the house and turned the engine off.
“Mackenzie, I want us to be friends” Ouch. That hurt. Wait, what am I saying? It took every single bit of courage in me to tell him how I really felt. I took a deep breath and said what I wanted to say.
“Kayden,I don’t know what you want with me, an-“.
“No, hear me out first” I waited a few seconds and he didn’t say anything, so I continued “And it’s really confusing because first you kiss me and then you just want to be friends. You are very hard to be around, since I never know what you’re thinking or what you’re feeling and it’s stressing me out. So, please tell me what’s going on” I let it all out and it took a few moments for him to answer. For a moment I thought he wouldn’t.
“I know I’m not a very friendly person, it’s just the way I am. I like to keep my business, my business and no one else’s. So that’s why we can only be friends. I’m sorry if I gave you another impression, it’s just what’s best for both” He said. Best for both, or best for you? Jason was right he only gave girls hope and then changed her for someone else. But I won’t be another girl so I decided to end this.
“So, friends?” I asked confidently on the outside, but on the inside I was pretty much dying. He tensed a bit, but then smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Friends” He said. I opened the door and slipped out of the passenger seat. “Thanks for the ride” I thanked him and before he could answer I was already inside the building heading for the elevator.
Today had been the longest, most exhausting day of my life. I need a bath and a good night sleep.
