Finally the alarm went off and I immediately jumped out of bed, grabbed my stuff and said goodbye to some of the staff there. I ran to the door and like they said, there was a taxi. I got in and as it sped off I saw the old building where I had been trapped for the last six years. My only fear was that this was all a dream and I would wake up any moment, but if it was, might as well enjoy it.
We arrived at the airport and there was only the taller guy from yesterday. He greeted me and started to give me the instructions
“Listen carefully, these are your tickets, passport, birth certificate and everything else. Your cousin will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it so you’ll know who she is. Oh, and one more thing. Your cousin will give you money that your parents left for you every month, ok?”
“Ok” I said and nodded my head telling him that I had understood. I hugged and thanked him while tears of happiness were streaming down my face before boarding the plane.
The seats weren’t numbered or anything so I sat in one of the rows in the front, the window seat. After a few minutes a guy came in.
“Can I sit here?” He asked and I nodded. He put his guitar down and sat down. He was very handsome with red hair just like mine, dark green eyes and a perfect smile that was hard to miss.
“Hi, I’m Jason” He introduced himself
“Mackenzie, but you can call me Mac” I said, no one had ever called me that, or anything for that matter but I was starting a new life and some things had to change.
“Nice to meet you, Mac. Can I ask you something?” He said
“You just did” I said playfully
“I was just kidding, sure” I said making him chuckle.
“Good, because I really wanted to ask you, why were you crying?” He said, looking into my eyes, I lowered my head
“I wasn’t crying” I denied it.
“I can hear it in your voice, I see your red eyes, and I can tell that you’re a quiet girl who keeps all her feelings inside, come on, tell me, you’ll feel better” He insisted.
“Are you a cop or something? That was kind of creepy” We both laughed. “No, I’m not a cop, but I can be a friend if you let me” He replied, I was willing to tell him, he was right, I had to open up to people a bit more, besides, no one has considered me as a friend in a very long time
“Do you really have time?” I asked
“It’s a four hour flight, and when you’re distracted, time passes by quickly. Besides when you tell a stranger its better, because they don’t know you so there’s no way to judge. Look I have a problem too, everyone has them” He explained.
“What’s your problem?” I asked curiously. “I like this girl, but it’s kind of impossible for us to be together”
“Believe me, nothing is impossible” I said.
“Well, she is a very special person to me, but his brother is my best friend. But seriously it’s nothing, your story seems more interesting, tell me.”
I got a little disappointed when he said he liked someone, but what was I thinking, we had just met, and I don’t need someone to love me that way, all I need is a friend. I told him everything that had happened, the accident, all those years that I had spent in the orphanage and my feelings. He looked genuinely interested, when I felt like I was about to cry he hugged me.
“Look, Mac. I can’t say I understand you, because honestly my life is very different from yours, but I can say that I am here for you” He hugged me once again
“No one has ever told me something like that, can we please be friends?” I begged, and soon I realized how stupid that sounded, but I didn’t care at the moment
“The best of friends” He replied the best answered I could have ever heard. “Can I tell you something? Even if it sounds cheesy?” I asked doubtful.
“Mac, if I wouldn’t want to hear you I would of shut you up when we took off” He smiled, his eyes on me. I smiled back, took some air and explained. “Sometimes it feels like my life is slowly ending, like I’m free falling, and there are so many reasons why I should say goodbye, but something stops me from a rough landing like a… “I paused to think of the right word to say but Jason got it first.
“… Like a parachute” He said.
“Yes! Exactly, there was no better way to say it, the thing is that I’m not sure what my parachute is” I said, ending my pathetic philosophy.
“Well, in that case, you need to find it, and open the parachute” Jason said. There was something about him that made me really enjoy listening to him. After that long talk we started talking more about us.He also told me that he was in Quakertown visiting his parents, and that he lived in Brookville with his older brother, I learned that he had a band with his friends, I also listened to some of their songs and they were really good.
Finally we arrived to Brookville we went for our luggage together, and waited a while.
“My brother is here, but we can wait for your cousin to pick you up, We´re going to Brookville too” He said
“I appreciate that but this is a moment that I would like to experience on my own and be prepared for it” I replied decided,
“Hiding all your feelings once again, Mac?” He asked.
“Not anymore, it’s impossible to hide them from you, but I would really like to experience it on my own, I’ll be fine” I smiled, he did too and started walking
“Wait, Jason! When, or how will we see each other again?” We had nothing to communicate with.
“Mac, we’re best friends, we’ll find a way. I love you! Enjoy your moment” Jason said as he walked away.
It would be impossible for to find each other again, perhaps he didn’t want to keep listening to my problems, but that was destiny’s choice.
