Ushering us into the cabin, Emma explains more. "Just an hour ago, the administrators told everyone to go inside their cabins, lock their doors, and stay there until further notice. They didn't explain why, but we saw on the news that Zayn escaped. They think he might be nearby, waiting." My mouth feels dry. "Waiting for what?" I ask. Emma shrugs. "You, maybe," she says. "He could want to see one of us too," she adds, gesturing at everyone gathered in the cabin. Louis nods. "He probably wants to try and convince one of us to help him or something," he says. Niall's grip tightens on my hand. I look up at him. He smiles at me, but it seems forced. I reach into my back pocket, looking for my phone but come up empty-handed. "Crap," I mutter. "I left my phone in your car," I tell Niall. "It'll have to wait, babe, sorry," he says. "We shouldn't go out there right now." I shake my head. "Give me your keys. He might not even be around here. It'll literally take me a minute to grab my phone and get back here." Niall sighs. "Fine. But I'm coming with you." I hold out my hand for the keys. "Niall, I'll be fine," I say gently. "Are you sure?" Aubree pipes up. "One of us could come with you," Liam offers. "Thanks guys," I tell them. "But I think you're worrying about nothing. I'll be okay. But if I'm not back in an hour, by all means come and look for me." Harry smiles. "You're right, Ally," he says. "He might not even be around here." Niall hands me the keys to his car reluctantly and I smile. "Thank you," I whisper to him and leave. I walk to his car, unlock it, and grab my phone from the seat. "I knew you'd come out sometime," a voice says behind me. My heart starts to pound. I turn around and see Zayn. "Why are you here?" I say, my voice high-pitched and trembling. "To see you," Zayn says. "Will you meet me by the lake at eight?" I shake my head. "The camp is on lockdown," I explain. "There's no way I'll be able to sneak out. And even if I could, why should I want to talk to you? You killed my sister." He sighs and scuffs his shoe against the ground. "I didn't kill her," he says. "Ansley did." Even though it's been nearly a year, hearing people talk about Ansley like that still hurts. "Whatever," I say, waving my hand dismissively. "Just try and meet me," Zayn pleads. "Okay," I relent. "But we can't talk for long. I have to get back to my cabin now, actually. Everyone will wonder where I am." He nods. "See you at eight," he says casually, but it sounds like a demand. He turns and walks away toward the trees. I hurry back to my cabin, wondering why I agreed to meet him. "There you are," Lacey says when I return. "I was gone for like two minutes," I say, trying to lighten the mood when I see the tense faces looking at me from around the room. "Yeah, we were just worried," Niall says, hugging me. We all stay in the cabin for a while, talking and playing truth or dare. I watch the clock closely and I feel more and more nervous as it gets closer to eight. How can I leave without anyone suspecting anything? "Hey guys," I say, getting everyone's attention. "I'm gonna make a quick run to the store. Anyone need anything?" Hopefully no one volunteers to come along. Aubree calls out, "Get some food! We can have a party!" while throwing some money at me. I take her money and say, "Anyone else?" No one says anything so I grab my car keys and head out after kissing Niall on the cheek. When I'm out of view of the cabin, I veer left and walk quickly to the lake. I check my phone and see it's 8:03. Luckily, Zayn is still there when I arrive. "You came," he says, sounding relieved. I nod. "Yup. I can't stay for long. Everyone thinks I'm picking up some things from the store." He nods thoughtfully. "Okay. I only got out of jail to talk to you, Ally," Zayn tells me. "There's something you should know." I nod, signaling he should go on. "Cameron was hired by Ansley to...kill you and Niall," he says, looking me in the eye. I pause. "Are you kidding me?" I ask finally. "No," he says solemnly. "Ansley told me because she thought she could trust me, but ever since the whole Ava thing, I haven't wanted to really be around her or be associated with her. So I'm telling you." My head hurts. I thought last summer was crazy, but if what Zayn is telling me is true, last summer will be nothing compared to this one. "What am I supposed to do?" I eventually say. "I advise you run," Zayn says. "Cameron knows a lot about you. The best thing- the only thing- to do is run." I run my hand through my already messy hair. "Alright," I say. "Alright. I believe you. But if what you're telling me turns out to be a lie, you can bet I'll be coming after you." He nods and holds out his hand. I shake it tentatively. "Trust me on this, Ally," he says. "I don't care if you don't listen to anything else I say to you as long as you listen to me right now. This is a matter of life and death." He starts to walk away, but I stop him by calling his name. "Zayn," I say. "Yeah?" he questions, turning to me. "Thank you," I tell him.
