6. The Future
On the way to the convenience store, I think more about what Zayn said. I know Cameron hates me, the feeling is mutual, but I didn't think she hated me enough to kill me. Even if Ansley said something to her, she didn't have to agree. I know Ansley very well, and she is super convincing when she wants to be. I grab some snacks and drinks and make my way to the register. "Is that all?" the cashier asks. I look up and see Cameron smiling evilly at me. "Yup," I reply, trying not to let her get to me. Cameron scans the items and puts them into a bag. I pay and am about to scurry off when she says sweetly, "Watch your back," and giggles. I whip around and race out to my car where I sit breathing heavily for a minute. You're okay, I tell myself over and over. After a few minutes, I pull out of the parking lot and head back to camp. "Yay, food!" Aubree exclaims when I enter the cabin. I hand her the bag and she immediately starts distributing the food. "It took you a while," Lacey says worriedly. "You okay?" I nod quickly. "Yeah, it was just really busy and they only had one register open," I lie. Lacey rolls her eyes. "I hate when stores do that. It's so annoying." I nod again. "I know," I reply. Niall comes over and slings his arm around my shoulders. "Wanna go somewhere?" he asks me. "Yeah," I say gratefully. We walk toward the lake, hand in hand. "I'm really worried with Zayn on the loose," Niall admits when we sit down, out feet dangling from the dock. "Me too," I say. "Who knows what he could do?" I feel guilty for not telling Niall what Zayn told me, but I'll tell him tomorrow. I need to think some things over tonight. "I'll keep you safe," Niall says, looking me in the eye. "I know," I say truthfully and rest my head on his shoulder. He kisses my forehead. "Another crazy start to another summer," he finally says softly. You don't even know half of it, I think. "I was hoping to just relax this summer," I say. "After all, we'll be going off to college soon." Niall nods and sighs. "Are you worried about what might happen to us in...the future?" I ask boldly. "No," Niall tells me. "I think if we made it through what happened last summer and we made it through only seeing each other every other weekend during the year, we can make it through almost everything." I can't help but agree with him. Our bond is so strong, it would take a lot to break it now. "I love you so much," Niall adds. "I love you too," I say, lifting my head off his shoulder to look at him. I lean into him, and we kiss. This kiss is different from other times we've kissed. There's a passion, a need, fueling it. His hands cup my face, and run my hands through his hair. I forget about Cameron, I forget about Zayn and Ansley, all I can think about is Niall. When we finally pull apart, he smiles at me. "Never leave me," I whisper. "I wouldn't dream of it," he replies and hugs me close.
