12. The Chase
I feel Kat tense up next to me. "Who is it?" she whispers in my ear. "Cameron," I reply. "The girl I was telling you about earlier? That's her." Kat looks confused. "Why is she here?" she asks. "Um, she was sort of hired to kill me and Niall..." I say quickly. "An assassin?" Kat gasps softly. "Ally, you need to run!" Cameron takes a step closer to us, and Aubree and Emma shrink back. "I'm here for Ally," Cameron says, her voice loud and clear despite the scarf she has covering half of her face. "I'm not coming with you, Cameron," I tell her, taking a step forward. Kat tries to pull me back, but I ignore her. "I know Ansley hired you to kill me and Niall," I continue boldly. "I know everything. And I know that I'm not going with you, no matter what you say or do to try and persuade me. I let you kick me around and walk all over me in high school, and there is no way I'm letting that happen again." I gain confidence with each word, and I step closer to her. Cameron scoffs. "Oh, please," she says. "You're such a pushover. Of course you're coming with me, Ally. I'm telling you to." I take a deep breath. "And I'm telling you no," I reply. I see Cameron reach into the bag she's carrying and my breath hitches in my throat. She must be reaching for a weapon. I spring into action and knock the bag out of her hands. It slides across the floor, and she lunges for it. Louis rushes to my side and kicks the bag away from Cameron. Liam picks it up and holds it firmly. "I'm calling the police," Lacey says, grabbing her phone from her pocket. "No!" Cameron shouts. She looks around the room desperately. Her gaze lands on Emma. "Emma!" Cameron barks. "Help me!" Emma hesitates for only a second. Lacey begins to turn around, but she isn't fast enough and Emma grabs her from behind. Lacey struggles while Liam runs to her, and she drops the phone. Liam goes to pick it up, but Emma kicks it and it goes flying. Cameron starts to advance towards me, but I hold up a hand. She stops. "Come with me, and I won't hurt your little friends," Cameron says, her voice sickly sweet. "Never," I say, jerking my knee up and hitting her in the stomach. Cameron stumbles back a few steps, and I hear Aubree call, "Ally! Run!" I sprint out the door and into the darkness. For a moment I'm disoriented and I don't know which way to run. Then I remember the Wilson's cabin is not too far away. I decide to run in that direction, hoping someone will be there. I'm wearing flip-flops and they're slowing me down, so I pause and take them off before starting to run again. Rocks and branches dig into my feet as I run, but I barely notice the pain. I hear footsteps behind me, and I know Cameron is gaining on me. I gather up all my strength and start to run faster. "You bitch!" I hear Cameron say. I'm looking more at the ground as I run than ahead of me, and I run smack into someone. "I'm so sorry!" I say in a rush. I'm about to start running again when the boy I ran into says, "Ally?" I turn around. "Zayn?"
