"What are you doing here?" I ask, frantically looking over my shoulder for Cameron. "I'm here to help you, I swear," Zayn replies, taking my hand. "Come on!" He pulls me after him. I stumble a bit but then I'm running again and gasping for breath after a few minutes. When Zayn finally stops, I try not to look out of breath, but I'm gasping for air. "Take a minute to breathe," Zayn tells me. "Then we have to start moving again." I nod, knowing it probably isn't wise to stay in one place for too long when Cameron is running after me. "Emma is working with Cameron and Ansley," Zayn says conspiratorially. "I saw her and Cameron come in one day and they both went and talked to Ansley. I think Ansley wanted to know backup information on you. Like what classes you have and when, and stuff that she wouldn't know otherwise." I figured it out on my own, but the news still comes as a shock. Out of all people, I never would have pegged Emma as someone who could be swayed that easily. She's definitely a softie, but I didn't think she was a pushover. "I'm sorry," Zayn says, seeing my face. "Do you know where Liam and Niall are?" I ask, going out on a limb. Zayn tilts his head. "They're missing?" Shit. I guess that's a no. "Yeah, me and Kat went out to the car for like two minutes and when we came back, they were gone," I reply. "That's weird," says Zayn. "Just tonight?" I nod. "Cameron," Zayn says under his breath. "I bet she has something to do with it. Maybe they're around here somewhere. They might've just run or something when you guys left." I shrug, but I know Niall wouldn't do that. He would let me know before he left to go anywhere, even if it was an emergency situation. Wouldn't he? I feel like I never know for sure these days. Everyone is turning on each other, and I have no idea what to believe anymore. "Zayn, I have one question," I tell him, looking at him seriously. "Yeah?" he says. "Why did you want Ava dead?" He sighs and looks down at the ground. "Zayn, please. I need to know," I plead. "You deserve to know, I suppose," Zayn replies. He glances around us. "Maybe I should tell you while we walk," he suggests. "I don't want Cameron to find us." We begin walking, and Zayn takes a deep breath. "I've known about Ava longer than you have," he says. "I met her right after I met you. Probably like a day or so after we first met. I thought she was you, naturally, because you look so much alike! I went up to her-" I hold up my hand, and he stops talking. "Where did you see her?" Zayn runs a hand through his hair. "Camp," he says. "I don't know what she was doing there, though." I nod, and he continues the story. "I went up to her and said like, 'Hey, Ally,' or something like that. She sorta smirked at me, and then she said, 'You're hot, you know that?' For a second, I was really confused, but I didn't really think too much about it. After all, I had sort of liked you since the day I met you." I blush, but he doesn't notice, and if he does, he doesn't seem fazed by it. "She wanted to go somewhere private, so we walked to the lake. We talked for a while, and I was thrilled because I thought I was getting to know you. Right before she left, she gave me her phone number and kissed me. She said she would be in touch. The next day, we met up again. She tricked me like that for a while. I was always so confused because you would ignore me and barely look at me when we were in public, but when we- well, me and Ava- were alone, you were all over me. I was planning on calling it off soon when I found out that you were a triplet. I felt so dumb, so I confronted Ava. She got all defensive right away, and said crap like, 'So you don't like me now that you know I'm not Ally?' and stuff like that. That's why she got so mad at you and hated you. Ever since then, I've despised her. When Ansley came to me and said about killing her, I didn't know how to feel. I wanted to scare her, not actually kill her." Zayn begins to cry. "When I found out she was dead, I sort of collapsed inside. I was terrified, Ally. I wish I could go back in time and rewrite all of last summer." It's a lot of information to process at once. "But why did Ansley want Ava dead?" I ask, scared to know the answer. "She found out Ava was even smarter than her," Zayn says. He winces. "This sounds horrible, but this is what she told me. She said that you weren't as smart as her, and she liked it that way. When she found out Ava was threatening her smartest sibling status, she freaked. She was really scared when Ava was found dead, too. Neither of us really meant to kill her." I stay quiet for a minute. "Yeah, but now Ansley is trying to have me and Niall killed," I say. "Maybe she meant it more than you think." Zayn nods, and I see he's still crying. "Zayn, hold up," I say. He stops walking, and I hug him. "You're not the only one who made mistakes last summer," I tell him reassuringly. "I know," he says. "But I think I made the biggest ones."
