“She doesn’t remember me, lads,” I said when I returned to the dressing room.
“Chin up, mate!” Liam said. “Did you give her a nickname? Maybe she remembers that.”
I thought for a moment and then remembered how I called her “Cockatoo” because of her last name. “Oh, yeah…Cockatoo. Her surname was Cochran, so I poked fun at it by calling her Cockatoo.”
“There you go!” Harry said with a snap of his fingers. “If there’s one thing a girl will remember about a guy, it’s the nickname he gives her.”
After the concert, which was a lot of fun, I heard my name being called in an Irish accent as Sarah and I were going to the car. I turned around and saw Niall approaching me.
“Niall, I told you. I don’t remember you!” I said.
“Maybe this will refresh your memory,” he said. “Top o’ the mornin’, Cockatoo!”
Cockatoo. That was the nickname Niall had given me, and only Niall ever used it. Suddenly, my mind flashed back to the day Niall had joined my class in third grade. “Holy crap, it IS you! You’re in One Direction now?!”
“Yes, and I never would’ve been here if I hadn’t moved back to Ireland in eighth grade.”
I scrunched my face in confusion. “But…how? How did you get so lucky?”
“Well, two years ago, auditions for a show called ‘The X-Factor’ were being held in Dublin, among other cities. I made it through, and here I am with four of my best mates.”
Amber, who’d been playing with her Raggedy Ann doll for the whole conversation, chucked the doll at another guy’s head. This guy had a Justin Bieber haircut and looked a little bit older than Niall. The doll hit him in the head and landed on the ground, and he picked it up and brought it back.
“Is this yours, love?” he asked Amber, handing it back to her.
Amber chucked it back at him and giggled at his reaction.
“Amber, that wasn’t very nice,” I scolded, and turned to the guy. “Sorry about my daughter. She’s in her terrible twos.”
“That’s quite alright. I’m Louis. What’s your name?”
“Valerie. My daughter’s name is Amber, and this is my friend Sarah.”
“Pleasure to meet you ladies…and little girl.” Louis laughed.
“Hi, Louis! I love you so much! You’re my favorite in One Direction!” I chimed in when there was a lull in the conversation.
“Why, thank you, love,” Louis said, flashing his adorable smile.
“Actually, I love all of y’all, but yeah, you’re my favorite.” I laughed nervously.
Louis laughed as well. “That’s nice. Want a picture or an autograph?”
“Yeah, both!” I gave him my copy of “Up All Night”, and he signed it and gave it back. Then, I took a selfie with him on my phone.
Liam came up and tapped Louis on the shoulder. Louis turned around, and Liam gave him the “come on” sign. “Well, we lads better hit the road. Our next stop is Charlotte.”
“Okay, keep being awesome!”
“We will, love. Bye.”
“Valerie, let’s keep in touch,” Niall said. “Do you still have my number?”
I shook my head no. “My ex-boyfriend got jealous and made me delete it.”
“Well, I’ve still got yours. I’ll call you later.”
Louis and Niall followed Liam to the tour bus and disappeared onto it.
