The orange and rusty red sky seemed to storm more violently than before. Loud cracks of thunder followed after the various colors of lightning bolts. To think that this so called Rune Stone could have caused all this along with possibly being the culprit for combining myth with reality in the same world, it was unbelievable. I don't know if my personal preference toward the Rune Stone had been any better as well, seeing that I was forced to ride on a unicorn. So if trying to save the world wasn't enough, there was always my personal motivation to get revenge.
The hors- or unicorn rather, started to trot and follow the turreted truck down the dusty, dirt road along with the other unicorns and their riders with normal weaponry such as knives, rifles and grenades. I must say, they looked much happier to be on them than I did, but regardless everything happened so rapidly. One moment I was out walking along the river with my sister and the next: travelling down a road to a bloody war and the front being a cathedral's doorstep, literally.
I glanced over to Kammy standing at the edge of the forest. She stood still as werewolves ran past her into the woods to the cathedral doors. She reached up to her neck and grasped the golden locket with a easily seen, false smile on her lips as she held back the tears. She knew that they would be the first to strike and we, the 'normal' humans on the unicorns carrying our rifles, would only be the reinforcements. It was going to be easy for us to break any barricades put in our way because their attention would be drawn toward the werewolves, or so we had hoped it to be.
Kammy looked down to the ground by her side and then turned into the woods. She hid behind a bush and then I watched a wolf-like creature run deep into the woods out of sight, still wearing the necklace...
Catching up to the pack to lead, Kammy led the three clans with pride in her eyes. She was the leader of Demetrio, Clayton was the appointed chieftain of Lysandrio, and lastly Hunter was the appointed chieftain of Theseus. The werewolves spread wide across the forest sweeping as much ground as possible until they found themselves in a flowered area with a large rounded rock in the center. Kammy climbed upon the rock and arched her back, howling at the moon that showed through an empty pocket of clouds above them.
When she finished, she looked down below and there sat all around her the three clans; after sitting for a while, the three clans joined in for the second time, howling at the moon that briefly showed through the overcast clouds. The breeze rippled through Kammy's thick, furry coat and she held her head up in enjoyment.
Suddenly, Kammy heard muffled gunshots from outside of the forest. It burst out into a continuous beat of firing that must have been on the road, where the unicorns and humans had been. Echoes of heavy artillery echoed every few moments. They must have met some resistance and now stuck in a firefight which could last all night. Kammy then looked into the sky and saw shooting stars go across the sky in the opposite direction. For after all, when a unicorn dies it is ascended into the stars to sip from the cup of the blessed forevermore. Undoubtedly, they had come across the forces of Empress Enya.
Kammy jumped over the crowd of werewolves and again started to run to the cathedral. She knew she had to act quickly now that this had happened, but how could they have been in threat's way already? Though, there were no times to ask questions now. Flocking quickly to the now fortified city that Enya had ordered to be built around the cathedral, the werewolves stopped at a hedgerow that shrouded them from view.
Kammy peeked out of the hedges and saw the city was completely empty. "Perhaps a curfew had been put in place as well?" Kammy asked herself in confusion. She then laid her eyes upon the cathedral. It was surrounded by a thick concrete wall nearly twenty feet tall (far too much for a werewolf to jump over), towers were posted at every corner for sharpshooters to be posted, and laid on top of the wall was spiraling barbed wire. The only place that seemed to be penetrable was the main gate that was a metal, laced fence; though, it probably was a high voltage fence as well.
Looking closer at the cathedral, it was giving off a smokey, eerie haze. In the cathedral's courtyard was also built a factory that gave off a whiff of caramel chocolate every now and then. Kammy supposed that the empress, Enya, did need her chocolates after all. It must be quite tiring living in a cathedral and making orders for almost the whole world to follow. Clearly, the lap of luxury for her meant having anything at her disposal at any time. Even a private helicopter was found sitting just outside. It must have been used to easily get to her private jet that was sitting on the freshly built runway.
It all seemed beyond lavish and posh. In fact, Kammy looked over toward Clayton by her side and said sarcastically, "I would bet that some people call her Oh Poshy One from time to time seeing all this."
"Nah," Clayton went on, "Definitely something more like..." He stopped.
"Well it's just a little bit cheesy; it's probably true though. She probably prefers it even!"
Kammy put her fingers to his lips and whispered, "Shh! Not so loud."
Hunter budged in hiding his fear, "I guess this is it then? We stay in a firefight waiting for our reinforcements until further ordered?"
"Yes, as it would stand now. Both Enya and the Rune Stone will be in that cathedral. We need them alive at all costs necessary."
A spotlight from towers around the cathedral suddenly shined over the hedges. Kammy and the others ducked down quickly and held their breath until it passed over. She whispered over to the clans, "The encounter with our reinforcements must have put the cathedral on high alert. Nevertheless, we do have the upper hand; they won't be expecting us from this direction. It should allow us a small gap of time to perhaps find another way into the cathedral before reaching the checkpoint where we had intended to meet up with the others."
"Just send out scouts?" Hunter suggested strongly.
Clayton also added, "Yes, and then the others may begin the assault with what we have."
Kammy thought for a moment and commanded firmly, "Yes, you two will go. You're the best we have and how this assault goes will rest in your hands. If you find an opening, come back to the checkpoint to deliver us the information."
Simultaneously the two werewolves replied, "Understood."
"Good," Kammy nodded. "I will see you two later then on the front and... Good luck."
"And to you too."
