Two days later
I didn’t go to school yesterday, I stayed home with Soap, it was just like a weekend, sitting back and watching TV, because he was injured he made me do everything for him, made me go out and buy him lunch, get him a new icepack when he needed it, get him a drink when he wanted it, I didn’t mind doing it for him, he was hurt and my little brother and I got a few things out of it, I would go get him lunch but not before I had my own and waited a few hours to go back home with his, but today he begged me to go to school and let him stay home alone, I was the same at his age, begging my mum to let me stay home by myself because I wanted to prove I was big enough to do it, I know he would be fine that’s why I didn’t protest and went to school, first, second and third period went by in a blur, I had history first, which I almost got sent out of twice, I had writing second which I intently paid attention in, then I had math which I think maybe I broke a table by continuously pushing it against the wall. I stood in the change rooms of the hall, slipping out of my school shirt and replacing it with a t shirt, I replaced my school skirt with my shorts before grabbing my ear phones and phone, knowing full well it was gym day, when I entered the hall the boys were already in the gym, I took off down to the oval as I found music to listen to, upbeat to get into the running vibe, my earphones were placed in, and pounding into my head, I know that if I took the buds out the music would be as if I hasn’t plug earphones into but I didn’t care, blocking the world out was what I did when I ran and thats what I was going to do now.
I hadn’t seen Ellen all day until sport, I don’t know if she was ignoring me or she just hadn’t seen me but I walked up to our sport teacher as he stood to the side of the gym and watched the boys boost their egos by bench pressing more than one another, Harry was a part of that, he had told me this was what happen every Friday, going into the gym.
“Sir, where’d Ellen go?” I asked looking in the direction he was which was at the boys in the gym, making sure they weren’t being stupid.
“Down the back.” he said not looking at me, “Every Friday she runs the whole period, your welcome to join her if you’d like, just if she tells you to leave her, I would do what she says.” He looks me up and down, “I’m sure she could snap you like a twig.” I nodded before making my way out of the hall I spotted a figure running, around the oval down the back, she must do laps, I made my way down to her, running quite fast to catch her until I was running at her pace but behind slightly, I reach around and pull the extremely loud music from her ears, she turns her head before laughing and grabbing the earphones from my grasp.
“What are you doing?” I move to run beside her and she grips her phone and turns the music off, placing it and the now de-attached head phones into her pocket.
“Sir said I could run with you.” She nodded, I was panting as I said it but when she replied it didn’t seem like a struggle.
“Im surprised he didn’t make you stay in the gym, it’s only your first week so it’s your first gym lesson.”
“Why don’t you do the gym stuff?”
“It’s stinks.” She admits making me laugh, she looks up at me as we run.
“You say the gym stinks but you’re out here running.” She shrugs.
“This is open, the gym is in a small confined space where twenty guys are trying to empress each other with how much they can bench press.” I nod in agreement, “You’re not one to try and empress the skanks of the class?” she asked and I was confused, my lack of reply made her continue. “The girls in the class, they don’t do anything but sit around and watching the guys run around and on Fridays they sit in the stinking gym and watch the boys boost their egos.”
“No im not like that, and your obviously not like them girls.” She looked up at me as she laughed.
“If im ever classes as that type of girl, god strike me dead on the spot.”
“Im glad.” She smiled up at me, “Hey, sir said that if I annoy you I better back off, he side you would snap me like a twig.” She doesn’t reply, “Why would he say that.”
“The first week of school this year, a guy throw a half empty bottle of coke at me, when I got up to confront him, he said I wouldn’t do anything and all I was, was a worth less girl, I jabbed him in the face a few times, I can’t recall how many and right hooked him once, he fell to the ground like a bag of shit, sir had grabbed me, holding my back against his chest in a bear hug trying to restrain me, I broke his nose after I freed one of my arms, but he still stuck by me so I wouldn’t get in trouble with the principal.”
“Tell you what scares me more than that?” I puffed out, she looked at me with humour. “That you can breathe fine while you say that.” I grab her arm, “Can we take a break?” I stop her from running, I was surprised, all the talking we did we made it back to the point I first pulled her ear phones out and im not sure how many times we had passed this spot.
“I scare you?” she laughed, I rose to my full high from being bent over with my hands on my knees and looked down at her.
“Not at all.” She laughed again and pushed me back, I placed my hands on my head and took deep breaths as she pulled out her phone.
“Let’s start walking back, there’s twenty minutes till the bell, I’ll probably leave class early, you coming with?”
“He lets you leave early?” she nods, “You’re so lucky.”
“Well if he knows your my friend he will probably let you as well.” We made it back to the hall, all the guys were still in the gym, sir was standing looking down at his phone.
“Sir, can I have the keys?” Ellen asks him, he looks up.
“A running partner, hey Ellen.” she looked up at me before out stretching her hand.
“Keys.” He placed a large amount of key in her palm, she looked at them a moment before picking one out.
“Wait here, I’ll be back in a second.” She walked away.
“Not many people can keep up to her when she’s out there.” I turn towards our teacher.
“Man that was a night mare, how does she breath?” he laughed patting my back.
“She doesn’t normally like people running with her, I guess you’re an exception.”
“Hey, Louis, go get your bag.” Ellen was beside me now. “Sir we’re leaving.” She looked towards the gym, “I don’t want to stay.” He nods and I quickly go to collect my bag, coming back as Ellen’s having a convocation with our teacher.
“Get fucked.” She laughed, looking at the photo sir was showing her, she swears at her teachers? She looked up from the phone at me before clearing her throat, “Oh ah, didn’t know you were there.” she looked back at the teacher, “I’ll see you next week.” He smiled and we walked towards the exit of the hall.
“You swear at your teachers?” she looked up at me.
“You weren’t meant to hear that.” She admits softly.
“Why?” she doesn’t reply, “You don’t like people hearing you swear?” she shakes her head.
“It’s not that.”
“Then what is it?” I pause, “You have a lot of secrets, Ellen, why. It seems as though a lot of people trust you, why do you not open up.”
“People may trust me, doesn’t mean I trust them.” her reply is soft as we walk towards the car park.
“Do you trust me?” she looks up at me a moment before look back down.
“I meet you a week ago, Louis.”
“A lot can happen in a week.” Like I think I fell in love with you! She smiles at the ground.
“Yes a lot can happen, but it’s just complicated, not many people know, there’s one person that knows everything, two if you include me.”
“Your mum.” I nod, she looks up at me.
“Most people suggest Soap or Tegan.” She tells me and I cock my head to the side slightly.
“My brother.” She states, her brother’s name is Soap, odd name.
“Your brother’s name is Soap.” She looks at me and shakes her head.
“My brother’s name is Josh, everyone calls him Soap but they don’t know the reason why, only few do.” She laughs to herself.
“Im gonna be confused until I know the reason.” She laughs again before sighing.
“When I was seven my aunty picked me up early from school telling me I had a baby brother, when we got to the hospital and I first saw him cradled in my mums arms I thought he was soap, from the exact day he was born I never called him Josh, give or take a few times, I always called him Soap, my parents and family eventually started calling him Soap as well, his first word was Soap, now everyone that meets him calls him Soap, because he likes it that way.” She smiles the whole time she tells the story.
“Does he ever tell you why he like being called it.” she nods.
“He tells me two reasons, one is because he thinks it’s a cool nickname, he thinks it’s cool because no one has a nick name so far from there name as that.” she laughs and we reach her car, she opens the door and stands laughing to herself.
“And the second reason?” she looked up at me.
“Because I named him it.” she laughed, “People tell us we get along way to well to actually be related.” She shrugs, “But I love him and if anything happened to him I don’t know what I’d do.” The bell rings and people start pouring out into the car park.
“Well I’ll see you Monday.” I smiled and she nodded.
“Bye, Louis.” the way my name rolls off her tongue is like music to my ears, I smile before walking towards my car.
