I turned the corner to head towards music when I see Ellen for the first time all day, I don’t know if she has been avoiding me or we just haven’t crossed paths, she stood talking to a teacher, five book in his hands all identical, im guessing there the books she writes in, she stands and talks to the teacher a moment before taking the books from him and heading away from the teacher and myself, I wonder why she is going that way if her writing class is on now and in the direction I just came, I walk after her but she’s gone, I go down the stairs she must have taken but there is still no sign of her, I walk towards the caught yard and finally spot her going towards the school car park, I follow and she stops behind her car, popping the boot and placing the five green books in before reaching in and grabbing a book with a homemade cover, she closes the boot and make her way to the driver’s side of the car and drops in, when I get closer to the car she has the book that I now see is a sketch book resting a little bit on the steering wheel and mostly on her lap as she draws. She draws a faceless person, the way they stand is sad, there lonely watching over a crowd of people, the person she draws is a girl, I can tell, she’s wearing a long dress that flows in the wind, I wonder if she’s drawing herself, drawing her feelings, I wonder if she feels alone and that’s why she keeps everything to herself, keeps every little detail about herself locked away unless she wants that to be known. I open the passenger door and drop in, she immediately slams the book closed, the outside is black with different shades of green paint splattered all over the surface.
“What the-“ she stops as she looks up.
“You’re an amazing drawer.”
“Why is it you always see the things I least want you to?”
“You mean the things you don’t want anyone but yourself to see?” she looks at the cover of the book, “Why aren’t you in class?”
“I could ask the same thing.”
“Touché.” I reply and she sighs.
“I was talking to my English teacher who is also my writing teacher, he was giving me back the books I gave him, he told me I could have the lesson off. For helping him out, I don’t know.”
“Helping him out?” she looked at me.
“I just told you, I gave him books.”
”Is he the only one that can read what you have written?” she raises an eye brow.
“How do you know they were my story’s I gave him?” she does a little squint with her right eye, like she always does at random times and it causes me to smile.
“It’s cute when you do that squint thing.”
“Louis!” she frowns, “How did you know I was talking about my stories?”
“I saw them, they were the green note books you always use.” She nods.
“Now the reason you’re not in class.” She traces the spine of her sketch book.
“I was wondering why you weren’t in class.” I shrugged, “I haven’t seen you all day, have you been avoiding me?”
“Yes and no.” I smile at the fact she admits it.
“Can I see the drawings?” she shakes her head gripping the book tightly in her hands, “Who was the girl you were drawing?”
“Louis, don’t.” she shakes her head, “please.”
“Ellen, I want to know everything there is to know about you, what your demons are.”
“I have a lot of “demons”, Louis.”
“So I’ve learnt.” She smiles, she finally smiles a real smile. “So…” she closes her eyes a moment before opening them again to meet mine.
“Im sorry I kicked you out yesterday, im not, ah, use to these things.”
“I can tell.” She looks down, “Please tell me.” she nods as she looks up.
“I like you Louis, and it scares me, I haven’t even known you a month.” I smile at her.
“I hadn’t even known you a week and I know I liked you.”
“Me too.” She admits.
“Go out with me. Like on a date.” Her eyes widen.
“Okay.” She pauses, “When?”
“Tonight, I’ll pick you up around six?” she smiles and nods.
“That’d be great.”
“You going out?” my mum asks standing in the door way of my wardrobe, my hair wrapped in a towel the same with my body.
“Yes and I don’t know what to wear.” I say looking around the wardrobe, she walks in and stands beside me.
“Well for starters you need to wear underwear.” I laugh and turn to her.
“No I thought I might go without them tonight.” I roll my eyes playfully and look back towards my clothes.
“Well I don’t know, normally you’re the one telling me what to wear, who are you going with that is making you so conscious about how you look?” she nudges me.
“Just a friend?” I shrug, “What do they like?”
“Ah, girls.” I joke.
“You know what I mean, Ellen.” I shrug.
“Never said.” I know she’s waiting for the ‘he’ or ‘she’ so I don’t think im going to give it to her.
“Well how about a dress?” she asked and I scrunched up my face.
“That will be a shocker to everyone, mmm, okay, a dress.”
“Heels?” I bit my lip as I though, I have warn heels before and I have quite a few pairs, I shrug.
“Why not.” My mum shuffles though the dresses I have before pulling one out, I scrunch my face up and shake my head, this was a repeated thing for a few dresses before she showed me one I didn’t even know I had, when my mum stepped out I slipped on my lace underwear then the dress before she entered once again.
“They’re going to love you.” She smiled and I groaned.
“God mum, I’m straight, it’s a guy im going out with.” She looked shocked at my outburst.
“Honey it wouldn’t even matter.”
“I know that but it’s a guy, I’ve always liked guys.” She smiles at me.
“Is it Louis? You guys have been spending a lot of time together.”
“Yes its Louis,” I pick up my phone to check the time, “And he will be here soon.” She rushes over to my wall of shoes grabbing a pair of black wedges with a cuff, I sat on the ottoman in the middle of the room and slipped them on doing the cuffs up before getting up to go to the bathroom and dry my hair before brushing it, as I held my hair over my shoulder gliding the brush though the strands, my mum came in with a bottle of my perfume and started spraying it all over me.
“Mum. Mum. Mum!” she stopped and looked at me, “I am already wearing perfume, I don’t think I need any more, thank you.” She smiles at me as I throw my hair over my shoulder, “Just letting you know perfume isn’t all that good to have in your mouth.” She laughs and there’s a knock at the door, my mum almost runs for it, I walk down the hall and am greeted by Tegan.
“I was wondering what you were going to wear, im surprised.” She said looking me up and down, “and your lucking he is already taller then you because you are a bloody giant in them.”
“Shut up.” I look at me feet. “Just because you’re short.”
“I’ll get it.” Tegan says as there’s another knock at the door, I walk to the door and out before they could invite him in because I know we will be stuck there.
“Let’s go while we still can.” I whisper grabbing his hand, he says a quick goodbye to my mum and Tegan before I had dragged him to his car, I looked back at the house, my mum and Tegan are still stood at the now closed door watching us.
“You look great.” He tells me and I smile.
“Yeah, ah, surprise.” I look down, “A dress.” I say and tug on the ham before I take a deep breath.
“I can see that, it looks really good.” He smiles, “Ah, should we go?” I nod in response and he opens the passenger side door.
“Thank you.” I take a seat as he closes the door gently before jogging around the front of the car, I buckle my belt and soon his in the driver’s seat beside me, the engine started and his belt done up before we drive away from my house.
“You smell really nice.” I blushed.
“My mum went a little over board.” I admitted causing him to laugh.
