74. Wait For It
"Are you ready for this?" Jake asked, holding his hands behind his back. "The great reveal of the technology I got today is going to blow your mind."
Almighty Z laughed. "Am I ready?" Her hands were behind her back as well. "The real question is, are you ready to see what we've accomplished here today?"
"On the count of three we show each other, then?"
Z agreed. "Three..."
"...One!" They both revealed their hands. In Zee's was a silvery one-inch cube. In Jake's were two clear beads of something that looked like glass. They both looked at each others' objects in confusion.
"I'll explain first," Z said. "Well, it's more of a demonstration. ZIP?" ZIP came to her side, and she placed the cube on the ground in front of her. "Engage," she ordered and ZIP bleeped in confirmation of an order well-recieved in the exact same instance that the cube began to vibrate, gaining speed and intensity until it was practically jumping up and down of it's own accord. Z grinned in anticipation, knowing what was coming. Just as soon as Jake began to doubt that anything beyond the cube excitedly vibrating was going to happen, it suddenly stopped.
He looked at it with an expression that can only be described as "bamboozled", though Almighty Z's grin only widened.
Then, completely unexpectedly, and with a satisfying pop that was rather like the popping of a kernel of popcorn, the cube burst into the air and in the blink of an eye, it'd disappeared. In it's place stood a ZORG drone, who blinked.
"Ta da!" Z said. "Collapsable drones!"
Jake nodded approvingly. "Impressive," he said.
"Thank you," Z replied. "They'll be very helpful. Now, your turn."
"Okay," Jake said, reaching across the drone now standing in between them and brushing the hair back from Z's left ear. She looked at him quizzically. He then took one little sphere and placed it in Z's ear so it rested and fit snugly right over the actual opening of the ear as he did the same to himself with the other.
'Can you hear me?,' she heard in a voice similar to, but slightly different than Jake's.
"Yes," she said, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "What is that?"
Jake only looked at her. 'Wait for it, wait for it,' the voice said.
She looked at ZIP. 'zlip floop galuzch vomo fazumph,' came ZIP's voice distinctly, though he displayed no signs of verbal communication.
"What the- OH!" Almighty Z said, her hand flying to her mouth. 'Can you hear me?' she thought.
'Can you hear me?' she said, raising her voice in her head.
'Loud and clear,' came the reply from Jake, who smiled. 'The louder you think, the more I can hear, so if you want to keep a secret, whisper it in your mind.'
'Whoa. Good to know. So this is what your voice sounds like to you?'
'I suppose so.'
'This way you'll be able to monitor what's happening during the battle without leaving the castle. Because the last time you left the castle we both almost got blown up.'
'I can see into the ZORG collective mind?'
'It'll even auto-translate if you just ask it to.'
Almighty Z looked at him, astonished. 'This is the coolest thing that's ever happened to me, and I'm the queen of an army of alien space robots.'
