12. The song of the Mountain

So much had happened, in so little time. It was all very confusing and sad. I had stopped crying, and brushed away the last tears. I sat down by a harp. I needed to calm down, so I put the knife aside and played.

Soon I was gone in the calming notes, with closed eyes. I was lost in a world of music.

I opened my eyes again, as soon as I felt watched. A human with dark hair and blue eyes was watching me. What I would not give to be one. Being an elf seemed to hard right now.

“I did mean do disturb you.”

He apologized. I smiled, not used to being apologized to.

“It is fine.”

I answered, and played a few notes.

“You look sad.”

He commented. I nodded, not wanting to share my feelings with a stranger. He seemed to understand, and sat down in a chair nearby.

“Would you play me a song?”

He gently asked. I hesitated.

“I often find that music calms me, especially a happy song.”

He said, leaning back in the chair. I looked away.

“I do not know a happy song.”

I said, letting my hands fall from the harp.

“Then play me a song that makes you happy.”

He asked. I smiled. I knew exactly which one.

“Far over the misty mountains cold

To dungeons deep and caverns old

We must away, ere break of day

To find our long-forgotten gold

The pines were roaring on the height

The winds were moaning in the night

The fire was red, it flaming spread

The trees like torches blazed with light

“Far over the misty mountains cold

To dungeons deep and caverns old

We must away, ere break of day

To find our long-forgotten gold

The pines were roaring on the height

The winds were moaning in the night

The fire was red, it flaming spread

The trees like torches blazed with light.”

I sang the song, just like Thorin had sung it to me. It made me smile, and it made me feel better. Even just for a short while, I felt right.
