3. The Flight
Author Note: This is from the perspective of a bee. I was told that I had done a good job in conveying her emotions. It was my first competition entry. I got the idea from the Bee Movie, which is why there are similarities but I wanted the bees in this story to have a more vicious revenge rather than take humans to court.
Entry for 247 Tales 'The Flight' competition in 2012
Won: 1st Runner Up
"No! These are lies! What proof do you have? You are but a mere advisor!" I shouted across the court. "Who claims that the Humans are taking our honey?"
"But Your Highness, we have seen this with our eyes. The Humans are taking our honey without care! They are worse than the bears!" The advisor informed me.
"This I must see myself!" I screeched furiously. I flapped my wings and flew into the air. I could hear my courtiers and my advisors shouting at me to come back to the court, that it was too dangerous, that I couldn't take care of myself and that I was too young to into a world which was full of peril. But I was Mellis, Queen of the Hive! My hive was in jeopardy if what the advisor said was true.
I flew out the hive knowing that my courtiers were hot on my tail. A funny expression that, since bees don't have a tail. I looked at my surroundings in astonishment. In front of me were fields of colour. There were purples and pinks and yellows and reds; pansies, daffodils, roses and red clovers. I inhaled the beautiful scents. And then I saw what my advisors were trying to tell me. It was what the Humans called a 'van' - I was well learned and could read human scriptures. I read a word that made anger and hatred ablaze inside me. The word was Honey. That day I vowed to take revenge.
