"Hello?, yeah everything went good."
"Were the boys divas?"
I laughed at the joke
"No" I said and then thought about Luke "absolutely not"
"Okay that's good Em, I gotta go, I made an appointment with my doctor tomorrow to see what is wrong with me"
"Okay, get well soon Steven" I hung up the phone once more.
I was on my way home from work. The babysitter had just put down Addie for the night , so I didn't have to worry about her being cranky when I arrived.
I continued to cruise down the empty highway wondering if he was actually going to call me, and if he did what would I say? These thoughts were endless until I pulled into my apartment carport.
The engine slowly died down and I noticed something strange. The front door had been cracked ajar slightly. "the babysitter must has forgotten to close the door all the way on her way out an hour ago" I thought to myself, but something wasn't easing the curiosity boiling in me.
I slowly got out of my hand downed beetle and slammed the vintage door shut. I took off my boots just incase I needed to run from someone, or something. Creeping up the stairs in only my rainbow socks, I peeked in through the window. No one was home.
A little weight was lifted off my shoulders , but not much. I came in closer to the door and with one pull, it was wide open. The smell of the apartment was unlike anything I know of. I stepped inside to find my cookie jar shattered on the floor.
I panicked. I raced to Adelynn's room, which was located in the back wing of the house and busted down the once locked door. She was gone. Her pink and yellow baby bed was empty. I scurried up and down the hallway screaming her name at the tip top of my lungs
"Addie!" "Are you here?"
Its was dead silence.
I ran into the kitchen to dial 911 but a note fell off the telephone.
ZANE WARNED YOU
AND NOW SHE GETS TO MEET HER FATHER
IF YOU WANT HER BACK
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS
I fell to the ground like a lifeless corpse. I didn't want to live anymore. Tears were being carried by the dozen out of my eyes and onto the frigid kitchen floor. What made this even worse is the fact that he had stolen my all my rent money. Everything I had was gone. Everything I had to live for was taken from me. I felt worthless.
Laying there on the floor I remembered my mom. I knew how she felt. I knew the pain she went through everyday because the same thing was happening to me. Greg was my father and I was my mother.
I had a flashback to that night.
"Everything is going to be alright" she told me.
Her tears were somehow stopped. Its like she knew she was going to go and she wanted to leave stronger than the man that killed her soul and body.
I had to be strong to. This was not the end. I raised from my grave and yanked out my cellphone, just as I flipped it open someone was calling me. I crushed the light up green button with my thumb to awnser.
"What the fuck do you want from me?" I yelled into the speaker
"You have the nerve to call me and you don't know what the hell you want?"
"Is this Emery?"
It hit me. This wasn't Greg who i was speaking with, it was Luke.
"Oh my gosh Luke i am so sorry!" I pleaded
"Ahh! so this is Emery. How is it going? i haven't seen you in 5 hours!"
His witty comment was uncalled for right now ,but I couldn't just hang up.
"Bad. I am not really in the mood right now to talk" I replied hoping that he would leave so i could get back to my very serious situation.
"Oh. Okay. do you want to talk about it?" he sounded genuinely concerned about me.
My response had not yet come out from my lips when a tow truck pulled away my vehicle. I had parked in a handy cap parking space by accident. "just fucking great!" I thought to myself but then an idea came to me.
"you know what ? yes. I do want to talk about it."
"okay so what is .."
and I stopped his voice from saying anything else
"why don't you just come over to my place and we can talk about it here, i hope you haven't eaten either, i just made dinner"
"Yes." he cleared his throat " I would love to "
"Okay great" I said and gave him directions to my apartment.
I cleaned up the jar shillings, put back on my boots, fixed my hair up a bit and sat down by the front door waiting for his arrival.
A knock at the door sang in my ears. I hopped up off the ground and awnsered the guest with a smile
"Well hello there" Luke said leaning in towards me, his hand on the doorway keeping him steady. His attempt at being flirtatious was eating at me, but I tried to stay focused on what was at hand.
"Please come in" I said batting my eyes
He followed me into the building
"Do you mind if i sit down?" he asked very politely
"No, go ahead" and he plopped down on the couch. I then handed him a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
"Thank you" he said taking the cup from my grasp, "what are you upset about?"
Completely ignoring his words I said "you know what would be totally crazy?" I said with a slight laugh. He took a swig of his beverage and looked at me "what?"
I glared into his eyes "if I called the man who just stole my daughter"
Coffee sprayed from his mouth and onto the table that sat in front of him. "Did I hear you correctly Emery?" His eyes were falling out of their sockets by this point.
"I am afraid so" I said beginning to dial on my cell.
"This has to be a joke right?" His laugh was almost mocking.
"No." I said harshly "This is not a joke Luke. I need your help to get my daughter back"
We stared at each other trying to comprehend what had been spoken. A few seconds later he nodded his head in agreement and a heavy wave of air came out from his nose.
"When do we start?"
