He waved a hand dismissively. "It's in the past now, dearie," he murmured, more to himself than Jane. "Let it go."
Jane wiped the tears from her cheeks, only to find more rolling down. "Let it go...?" She whispered. "But... I can't..."
He turned in his seat and observed her over the rim of his glasses, his eyes filled with sadness and grief. but... there was something else in his eyes. Something called kindness. "Let it go," he insisted. "Spread your wings and fly."
All at once, Jane stopped crying and looked into the man's eyes. He was smiling ever so slightly. But he wasn't looking at her; what he was looking at was over her left shoulder. Jane followed his gaze and gasped.
Behind her, coming from her own back, were gleaming white wings.
