Back when my dad was still alive, he used to joke about our family being cursed. How one of our ancestors pissed off the wrong witch way back when, and they put a curse on our entire family name, to where we would never be happy again.
When he was diagnosed with cancer he jokingly said “that’s what the curse does to us”. If he were still alive, I know he would say the same thing now.
I couldn’t sleep at all after we got the news. Couldn’t imagine what it would be like to go through it all over again. It was apparent, cancer runs in the family. My grandpa had it, my dad had it, and now so does Shane.
After meeting with the doctor Harry had sat next to me in complete silence, holding my hand. His support was the only thing keeping me from jumping out of a window.
It was about 9 in the morning when Shane awoke. I hadn’t gotten much sleep that night. None at all since our conversation with the doctor. She said we would have to keep Shane in the hospital while they figured out the worst of the cancer. Apparently he had collapsed from a tumor in his brain. Of course it couldn’t just be testicular cancer, it had to be where we can’t touch it easily.
“Good morning handsome” I whispered. He rubbed his eyes and sat up a bit. Harry stirred next to me.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
Puzzled, I looked at him “Don’t you remember what happened last night?” I asked.
“No, I don’t. I mean I remember we were playing catch outside, and I felt dizzy. But that’s it.”
I looked to Harry who was staring at Shane. Just then the others walked through the door, Jeff in the lead.
He ran up to the edge of Shane’s bed, followed by Nicole and Chelsea.
“Hey guys, good morning” I yawned. I looked to the boys, finding Zayn, sleepily being supported by Louis and Niall.
“You should go home and get some rest, we can take watch from here” Liam spoke.
“Thanks Li, but I should really stay. He might need me.”
“No really babe, let’s go home. You need a bed.” Harry piped in. His long curly hair was everywhere and I smiled at the image of what I must look like.
“Yeah sure. Shane, are you going to be okay?” I looked to him, as he nodded and turned back to Jeff and the girls.
I stood up and motioned for the boys to follow me. Harry and I recounted what happened last night, and what the doctor said. Before we left I made sure that the boys wouldn’t tell the other kids the news. I didn’t want them to know that their brother was dying. Frankly, I don’t want to know that my brother is dying.
Harry grabbed my hand after I said my goodbyes and together we walked out of the hospital. I climbed into the car and Harry drove off. Once at the house Harry and I marched up to my room and collapsed on the bed. Neither of us talked, but neither of us fell asleep. With my head on his shoulder I listened to his breathing as it soon slowed. I focused on matching my breathing to his, and soon drifted off to sleep.
I was at a family reunion at a park with a pool. Except the pool was filled with dolphins. Jeff and Shane were off in the corner picking at something while Nicole and Chelsea were riding the dolphins. I walked over to Jeff and Shane and as I got closer I saw what they were looking at. Snakes. Not just any snakes, but big snakes. Pythons. I screamed, but nothing came out. Jeff and Shane turned around and smiled as the python slowly wrapped itself around them. I ran and pulled it off only to be entangled myself.
‘No!’ I thought. I pulled and wiggled until it finally slid off in annoyance. Next thing I knew I was being held in the air by my cousin, headed toward the pool. I can’t swim. I’ll drown. I kicked and punched Matt but he wouldn’t let go, until he threw me in. Water filled my lungs and I struggled to breath. I opened my eyes and saw in front of me, a stingray.
Panicking I batted my arms around, trying to get to the surface. I broke the top and took a huge breath. I looked down and the stingrays and dolphins were gone. Instead a great big shark was swimming toward my struggling feet. I watched in horror as my life flashed before my eyes. I was going to die. I screamed and then…
I awoke with cold sweat all over my body. It was dark, but I could tell it was still daytime due to the light streaming through the curtains. Harry was nowhere to be seen. I relaxed back down and let out a huge breath. I couldn’t seem to get the image of the shark out of my head. I started thinking about how just like in the dream I would give my life to my family. I would do anything to keep Shane alive. I will do anything to keep Shane alive.
