14. The phone call
Months went by and I got bigger and bigger. It ended up with that I couldn't work and I had to take care of myself.
"How big will you be?" Harry used to joke with me. I just laughed and I gave him a warning glance.
"That don't you say no to a pregnant woman?"
I often sat inside the new room, which we had prepared for the baby. Harry had bought a rocking chair, where I could sit and nurse my child. It felt wonderful to just sit in your room and enjoy. I felt ready to give birth and I was ready to become a mother. The phone rang, and as always, I had a phone near me.
I stayed up. I recognized his voice, and I heard that it was him. What would I say? I hadn't talked to him in a long time and I had pushed away all thoughts of him.
"You don't need to answer." he whispered tenderly. "I just wanted ...."
I sat down and I heard his breath at the other end. He sounded unsure, he sounded scared and I wondered why?
"I miss you!" he went on, and it sounded as if he meant the words. I took a deep breath.
"I'm sorry Niall, but I don't want anything to do with you. Okay?"
I wasn't sure, but it sounded like he was sobbing. I heard how he almost lost his breath and he made an effort.
"I know!" he whispered. "But I miss you so much and I don't know if I can cope with not having you here. I regret that I hurt you."
I closed my eyes.
"Niall, I'm married now with Harry again and this time I'm not thinking..."
He interrupted me.
"I know!" he sobbed. "I know that you are with him, but what about me?"
I opened my eyes and I looked over at the crib.
"I can not, it's not about you anymore. I'm pregnant. Me and Harry going to be parents."
Niall fell abruptly silent. It was as if he died or if he fainted. It just got quiet and I didn't even hear his breath longer. Maybe he got a shock? I had no idea what I would do or say. I heard he put on, and it came almost as a shock to me. How could he be so selfish that he hung up the phone without saying anything?
Harry was surprised when he got home. He gazed at me as if he thought I had said more to Niall, against what I had said.
"Are you serious?"
I sigh and I nodded at the same time.
"And I said like it was."
"That he's the father?"
I smiled and I shook my head. I went up to him and I hugged my husband.
"No, you're the father, you fool!"
He relaxed, but I saw the suspicion in his eyes. I didn't blamed Harry, but at the same time I wanted him to trust me.
"I don't want him." I whispered. Harry smiled slightly and he took his arms around my shoulders. He kissed me lightly on the forehead and he cleared his throat a little bit.
"So you wont leave me?"
I nodded and I hugged him.
He took a deep breath and then he smiled bigger.
"So he just hung up on you?"
"What an idiot?"
I saw a twinkle in Harry's eyes and I saw the playful man.
"Yes, he's a big idiot!"
Harry kissed me again, but this time on my lips.
"We don't care about idiots in my family!"
I smiled big.
"What a relief that I belong to your family?"
He agreed immediately and he pulled his hands through my hair.
"So the day did contained an idiot and some phones?"
"How was your day?"
"Money, papers and meetings."
