3. Loneliness

I can carry small silver bells

in a berry basket

So that when I go

into the forest

they ring

And the birds follow

my footsteps

so that I’m not alone

I can breathe

cats and dogs

When I’m talking to myself

kittens appear

If I tell a secret,

it’s a great big sheepdog

But they all get taken

away from me

to the pound of silence,

never to return

I can tolerate

a red balloon

Ignore it,

hanging from the ceiling

Pitiful,

helpless,

lonely.

I go to get a ladder.
