1. You can't send me away
"Ally! Can you come downstairs, please?" calls my mom. I groan and reluctantly leave my room and go downstairs. "You can sit," my dad says, nodding at the kitchen table. Now I'm worried. I sit down, though, thoughts running through my head. Maybe Grandma May died. Or we're moving. My stomach twists into a knot. My mom takes a deep breath. "We know this year has been hard for you," she begins. What an understatement. I'm not exactly the smartest person, and this year my classes were really, well...hard. "We thought you would want a stress free summer," my mom continues. I nod slowly, confused as to where this is going. Maybe they're taking me on a cruise or something? My mom looks meaningfully at my dad, who picks up where she left off. "We're sending you off to a summer camp. You leave in a week and a half." I just sit there, mute, letting the news sink in for a few seconds. Then I blanch. "What? Summer camp? That's for little kids! I can have a relaxing summer here, with all of my friends, and you guys! Why do you have to send me away?" My mom massages her head. "Ally, sweetheart, we just think it's what's best for you right now. It will get your mind off the school year." I stare at them defiantly. "I am not going to a stupid summer camp! You can't send me away!" My dad sighs. "Honey, this is not a punishment, so don't treat it as one. It's just a camp. You'll have fun. You'll make new friends." I cross my arms across my chest. "No. I can have fun here. And I like my old friends just fine." I stand up, about to go back to my room and sulk. "Ally." The stern tone of my mom's voice startles me into staying where I am. "You're going," she says flatly. "And that's final." I flee upstairs to my room before the tears come. They say they're sending me to camp because of a stressful school year, but I'm not buying it. There must be so ulterior motive as to why they want me to leave. And I'm going to figure out what it is.
