“Oh God I’m going to be sick. Bernie? Of all people, Bernie? Bloody hell, is she really my sister? Bloody disgusting.”
“Yes. Yes she is.”
At that point they heard footsteps coming down the stairs. Lucy’s hair was slightly out of place and still a bit damp, and she wore a big black jumper and skinny jeans. The door creaked open.
“Oh look. I’ve seen that look before. You on the walk of shame?”
“Shut up. We need to talk.”
“Are you trying to have the talk with me?”
“I think your past that, sis.”
“I beg your bleeding pardon?”
“Dixon, get out.”
“No. No just speak.” And that’s what Lucy did. She talked and talked and told Roach everything, everything about Mr Green, Lear, prison and everything. Roach sat there, for once in her life, in silence, without saying anything. She was like a memory stick, which had just downloaded a huge pdf.
“Right,” She said when Lucy was finished, “Is any of that actually true?”
“Yes. All of it.”
“Right. Right. Ok then… what the bloody hell! Ha!” Roach laughed and slapped her hand over her mouth, after a few seconds she suddenly froze, “Oh my fucking fuck. This is real. This is huge. You hid away to protect me?”
“I had to. I promised my mum I would look after you, after dad’s death.”
“I had a dad. I was at his funeral. There was something green in the coffin I’ve told you all this!”
“Adoption. You were adopted and brainwashed to think he was your real father but he wasn’t. I’m the only family you have. And vice versa.”
“Ok then. Well, now I’m your sister, can I ask you something?”
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing with Bernie?”
“Because… because I never have. And now I can. And… I could die any second so… I might as well.”
“You sound like an irresponsible teenager.”
“I’ve lived all my life without a mother, I don’t need one now thank you.” Roach shrugged.
“Fine… you ain’t got a blessing of mine.”
“What makes you think I want it?
“Quite frankly I don’t even know what that is!”
“What what is?”
“This thing with you and Bernie? What is it?”
“I don’t know, we did it, he’s out of the shower, I don’t know what next.”
“Well would you like to do it with him again?”
“I feel very awkward right now, please can I leave?”
“Grow some balls, Dick!” Roach continued. After a second she realised what she had just said.
“Yes I would. Yes I fucking would! Are you happy now?”
“I’m feeling quite sick to be honest but thank you. Thank you so very bloody much. Can this get anymore awkward, can it really?”
Bernie walked in, and sat down next to Lucy. She smiled at him and slipped her hand on his thigh, it was not reciprocated.
“Well,” Dixon said, “Who wants tea?”
