The sunlight came through my window about 7:30 this morning.Typically I would have been annoyed at the fact that the stupid light woke me up so early but today was different. Today I would have gotten up early even if the sun decided to stay tucked away for a few more hours. Today is the day I will be receiving my sixth hogwarts acceptance letter. I got up and stretched and reached for my phone and texted my best friend.
sent 7:31 a.m.
It wasn’t five minutes after I had sent the text that an owl came in through the window and dropped the familiar yellowing envelope onto my bed and flew off. After opening it, I went to the shower and cleaned up and got dressed before heading out to go shopping for my school books and other necessities. I checked my phone once more before heading out. I saw I had a new message from Kai.
I know!! :)
recieved 7:49 a.m
I quickly texted back telling her to meet me at the Leaky Cauldron and headed out. When I got to Diagon Alley, I noticed what appeared to be a very lost girl. As I got closer, I started to notice she looked my age maybe older. I gripped my bag and inhaled before leaving her to head into the Leaky Cauldron. I ordered a butter beer and sat as I waited for Kai. I looked at my phone to see if I had any new messages from her. My phone lit up when I unlocked it and saw no new messages. I unlocked it and looked and saw that she had read it. I sighed and put my phone back in my bag and stood and started to turn to head out when I suddenly found myself soaking wet and on the floor. When I finally processed what had happened, the lost girl from before was hanging over with a now empty cup of butter beer.
“I am so sorry!” She said frantically as she grabbed some napkins and handed them to me. She held out her hand and I took it as she helped me up.
“It’s fine. Really!” I say while laughing. I grabbed my bag off the ground and looked at her again. “Can I buy you another butter beer? seeing as how your first ended up all over me,” I laugh as I gesture to my wet clothes.
“I can’t. That’s sweet but I won’t let you.” She said. I laughed again and took her hand and led her to the front.
“Two butter beers please,” I said and before she could stop me I put the money down and the cashier took it. “I will be right back. Choose a seat, I need to change.” I walked away and headed toward the bathroom and grabbed the extra clothes out of my bag that I always keep just in case. I changed out of the soaked clothes and put on the dry ones and washed up a little so I wasn’t all sticky and stuff. Afterwards I headed out of the bathroom and found the girl and sat down next to her, taking a sip of my butter beer.
“Thanks,” She said smiling at me. I smiled back.
“It’s no problem,” I say as I looked at her. I rummaged through my bag and checked my phone once more to see if Kai had messaged me yet. Still no answer. I sighed and put my phone down and looked at the girl again. “You don’t look like you’ve ever been here before, but I refuse to believe that you’re a muggle given the fact that you found your way to diagon alley. So why do you look so lost?” I say with a sideways glance. I noticed a smile stretch across her face which of course caused me to smile.
“That obvious huh?” She said through a little giggle. I laughed and nodded and moved a little closer to her. “I am going into my seventh year of wizarding school and I would normally go to the American wizarding school but me and a few students got transferred to Hogwarts. I got my acceptance letter with my school supplies list and a note attached saying I could find all the things I need here in diagon alley but I have no idea what I am doing.” She explained sounding flustered yet cool and collected at the same time. She was cute in that sort of way.
“Then it’s a good thing you spilled butter beer on me!” I said laughing. She gave me a sideways glance and laughed.
“Why’s that?” She responded still laughing.
“Because. If you hadn’t then I would have never talked to you and you would still be lost. I am going to help you out okay?” I said as I gently nudged her. She smiled and nodded and we headed out the doors and went shop to shop getting our supplies. When we finally done, we stood under a lamp post for a break. I looked through my bag to grab my phone to get her number. My heart sank with each moment I looked and it wasn’t there. I sighed and through my head back.
“What is it?” She asked looking at me with concerned eyes. I sighed again and looked at her,
“I think I left my phone in Flourish & Bott’s,” I said as I looked down. Before I knew it she was pulling me by my hand and we were headed in that direction. “What are you doing? It’s a thirty minute walk from here!” I said trying to stop her but obviously there was no stopping her at this point.
“We’re going to get your phone silly. We walked from there to here. What’s a half an hour gonna do? Kill me?” She said laughing which in return caused me to laugh. I then thought for a moment.
“I still don’t know you’re name!” I said kind of embarrassed that I hadn’t asked her sooner. She laughed more.
“My name is Casey, What’s yours?” I smiled when she said her name.
“I’m Harlow,” I said. She smiled as well and we walked in a comfortable silence until we got to the book store. I took her hand and ran in and went to the fifth and sixth year books where I had last been. When I got there I noticed a figure sitting in the middle of the isle. I didn’t think anything of it until I got closer and noticed it was Kai. I felt my cheeks get red as I got flustered. She didn’t have time to meet me at the Leaky Cauldron but she was going to be in diagon alley anyways? I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“You run fast!” Casey said when she finally caught up to me. I smiled half heartedly and she looked at me with that sideways glance she does a lot. “Are you okay?” She said. I nodded.
“Yea just hold on a second.” I say as I walk away from her and make my way to Kai. She didn’t look up so I cleared my throat. “Hi, Kai,” I said sounding a little more harsh than I had intended. She looked up at me and I saw her roll my eyes. My ears started to get red as they usually do when I’m mad.
“I didn’t expect you to be here,” She said looking straight forward.
“I see that you were too busy to hang today. Maybe another time then,” I said with a definite sadness in my voice. Before she could even process what had happened I turned around and grabbed Casey’s hand and pulled her out of the door. Casey stopped me and looked at me.
“You alright?” She said. I took a deep breath in and nodded.
“Yea I’m fine.” I said and smiled at her. She smiled back and she pulled my phone out of her pocket. I laughed and took it and hugged her. “Thank you,” I said still smiling. She laughed and nodded.
“Don’t mention it. It’s payback for the butter beer,” She said as she winked at me. I blushed and smiled at the ground. I got her number and I gave her mine and we went our separate ways. When I got to my apartment it was about 11:39 p.m. I layed down on my bed and let the all too familiar silence engulf me as I drifted off to sleep.
