"That lesson was surprising interesting" Savannah gushed as we walked out of English. I wasn't really paying attention to what she was saying, I was too busy thinking about why on earth Mr. Horan would be watching me like a hawk throughout the entire class period.
We walked down the hallway to our next class periods. Savannah was blabbering about something but I don't know what about. My mind was strung out on last class. I don't get what he was looking at. Plus he looks so familiar, Savannah says she has no idea why I thought he looked familiar but she agreed.
I honestly couldn't tell you what happened the rest of the day. My mind was preoccupied with a certain blonde teacher. I get to see him once again tomorrow but I wanted to see him now. Something was drawing me to him.
On my way back to the dorm I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket. I pulled out my black iPhone and smiled at Harry's name. I haven't talked to him since yesterday. His text was a simple hello but I missed him, I decided to just call him instead.
After three rings his gravelly voice called through the other line of the call. I walked over to a bench in the middle of the courtyard.
"Hey" I smiled into the phone. There was a slight static on the other end but soon enough his voice called through.
"What's up buttercup?" He asked playfully. I chuckled picking at the hem of my shirt as I sat there. The sun was out, it was a nice warm day. This is my favorite type of weather, the type where it's not super-hot but not super cold. The weather where you can wear a T-shirt and jeans or light jacket and shorts.
"I just finished my last class of the day." I hummed taking in the sunshine.
"How was your first day?" He asked smoothly. I sighed, I don't really know what to say. I can't really say that my new English teacher looks strangely familiar and he couldn't keep his eyes off me the entire class. That wouldn't really go over well with Harry. So instead I settled with the simple answer.
"Alright, I have more homework than I had expected. How about you? Did you start today?" I asked. The line was silent for a moment before a sigh rang through.
"Yes, I thought I told you that?" He stated sounding slightly irritated. I racked my brain trying to remember if he did tell me this. I honestly can't think right now, what's happening to me?
"You probably did. I can't remember I'm sorry Haz" I sighed. I looked down at my feet shamefully. He grumbled through the phone.
"It's alright. I was thinking of coming down on the weekend to see you. Maybe I can drive you here to see my dorm?" He offered. But I wasn't paying attention to anything he was saying. My eyes caught hold of a tall blonde man in a suite walking to his car. A woman was following his steps and she didn't look happy.
"Mr. Horan you have to come to this meeting. All English teachers must attend." She barked. Mr. Horan stopped and turned to her, he looked tense and distraught.
"I have personal matters I need to attend to. I'm sorry." He spoke quickly but intensely. The woman scoffed shaking her head.
"Like I haven't heard that one a thousand times. I will fire you!" She threatened. Mr. Horan turned on his heels to face the woman. He looked pissed.
"Fine, But you'll be firing a man who just found out his brother has Cancer." Mr. Horan nearly whispered. The woman stopped dead, she looked stunned.
"I- I'm sorry. I-I thought..." She trailed. Mr. Horan shook his head before turning to his motorcycle and mounting it. His eyes looked up and met with mine, they looked pained but somehow soothed when his eyes met mine. The woman scurried away leaving me and Mr. Horan to our rapidly becoming normal staring contests.
"Ace?" My phone called. I jumped, I had completely forgotten I was on the phone with Harry. My eyes stayed glued to Mr. Horan, he looked down. I noticed his face looked wet.
"I have to go, sorry Harry. I'll call you later. Bye" I said robotically. I ended the call and stood up from the bench. I don't know what came over me but I found myself walking up to my teacher’s bike and standing before him. He turned to me, shock written all over his features. I gave him a small smile of encouragement. His eyes roamed my face as if they were looking for something, something I couldn't tell what though.
"Hi" I said breaking the silence between us. He took a shaky breath before he spoke.
"Hello, Miss Clever. How can I help you?" He asked trying to sound as professional as possible. I could see he just wanted to ride away and get to wherever he needed to be but since I was there he couldn't.
"I'm sorry... I just couldn't help but over hear... It's none of my business. I'll leave you alone." I stuttered out. He shook his head quickly.
"No it's okay. I don't actually have anywhere I need to be. He's not my brother that has cancer, I just... I just need to go home. I know that's a terrible lie but, well, yeah" He mumbled not really making any sense. I nodded, so he lied? He lied about his brother having cancer so he could go home? Wow, he's a badass teacher.
"Oh. I'll let you get home then" I say moving to turn around but a hand reached out and stopped me. I gasped, a shock of what felt like electricity went straight up my arm and to my stomach. My eyes met Mr. Horan's whose pupils dilated when are eyes met.
"Would you like a ride home?" He asked. My mouth went dry, something about this man screamed 'run' but every fiber inside me said 'run to him'. Most would think it's insane to get a ride on your new teacher’s motorcycle home when your dorms literally down the street but I said yes. I stupidly said yes to this man.
"Hold tight, I think we should make a quick stop before I take you home" He smirks. My stomach does a backflip as I mount the bike behind him. I wrap my arms around his middle and he kicks the bike to life. A roaring sound screams throughout the campus and we're off. Flying through the streets and away from the school campus. My long black hair is flying through the wind and I feel nothing but excitement inside me.
After a short ride through the streets I find that we're now downtown. I have only been here a few times, people always warned me it was sketchy late at night but I felt safe with Mr. Horan. I knew deep down he would never let anything happen to me. We pulled into a parking garage and we got off the motorcycle. Mr. Horan placed the helmets on his bike and looked to me.
"When I first moved here I could barely cook. I used to drive around a lot and I found this place and well I don't know if you've ever been here but I think you'll like it." He smiles. I nod back at him, he reaches around me and leads me to the exit. The entire walk out of the garage is silent I finally break it.
"Mr. Horan...” He cuts me off.
"Call me Niall outside of class." He says casually. I nod and start my sentence once again.
"Niall, why are you doing this?" I ask. He sighs shaking his head, it's like he wants to tell me something but he can't. I don't understand why.
"I don't know. But here we are!" He grins looking up to the building in front of us. I look up as well and read the sign above the restaurant. Peggy Sue's.
"Have you ever been here?" He asks reaching out to the front door and pulling the door open. I shake my head no.
"Well this place has the best milkshakes I have ever had." He beams. I chuckle nodding.
"We'll see about that" I joke. He gasps as he leads us inside. A woman is at the front, the entire restaurant is built like an old diner. Bright neon colors and signs everywhere. Posters and knick-knacks from years and years ago litter the walls. This place is great.
"Niall! Long time no see!" The woman smiles at us. Her eyes wander to me and her grin widens.
"Beth! Hey. Yeah, I just haven't had the time to come down here sorry." Niall apologizes. The woman, Beth shakes it off handing us menus. I glance over it but Niall hands his back. I do the same giving him a confused look.
"Two vanilla milkshakes, with whip cream and a cherry" He orders for me. I usually would protest and say I can order for myself but I stayed quiet. I reached for my purse but realized I left it at the dorm. Crap how was I going to pay for my milkshake?
"It's on me Love." Niall leaned down and whispered in my ear. I shivered as his hot breath fanned down my neck giving me goose bumps.
"Niall you can't -"
"I just did" He laughed handing Beth his credit card. I sighed shaking my head. Once he had paid, he led me over to a big red booth table. I sat on one side him on the other. I found it amazing it wasn't awkward between us. Although it was silent it didn't feel awkward or forced. I liked it.
"So do you like it here?" Niall asked as he saw I was looking around the diner. I nodded quickly the entire place was like a historic museum of all the cool and fun things that happened over decades and decades. They had every TV poster you could think of that aired when your mother was a kid. I found it fascinating.
"Yes it's amazing. I can't believe I've never been here!" Niall chuckles leaning back in his seat. Beth walks out from the back with a tray of two milkshakes. She places them in front of us and we both thank her. Niall's eyes wander to me, he watches me intently.
"What...?" I ask reaching up and wiping my face.
"Do I have something on my cheek?" I ask insecure for a moment. He laughs shaking his head.
"No, I just want to watch you have the best milkshake you have ever tasted" He smirks.
"I could be recording it but I thought I would save you from that" He jokes. I laugh rolling my eyes and taking my first sip. My eyes widen, yup best milkshake ever.
"So is it good?" He asks sipping his shake finally. I laugh nodding.
"Better than good, it's amazing" I state, we sit in the diner for the next hour talking about nothing important but just learning more about each other. I found out he's only 23. He graduated high school early and got his teaching credentials really fast. That's how he's so young and a teacher. I found out he was born in Ireland but I could have told you that without even asking. Then he said he moved to London for schooling and met his best friend Liam who is back in London.
We talked and talked and I nearly lost track of time. Once we had both finished out milkshakes and were just basically loitering he sighed standing up and taking out shakes to the bar to hand the glasses back to Beth.
"Bye Beth! See you next time." He called to her. She shouted her goodbye back to him and he turned his attention back to me.
"Are you ready to get going?" He asked. I nodded standing up and following him back out to the motorcycle.
"Thank you Niall." I say as he get to the bike. He nods grabbing the helmets. We mount the bike and before I know it we're riding out of the city and back to the dorms. Niall parks his bike in front of my dorm entrance and gets off. He smiles at me softly.
"Thanks Ace." He says. I give him a puzzled look.
"Why are you thanking me? You're the one who got the shakes" I laugh. He shrugs looking down at his feet.
"I don't know. I just needed that. We should do this again sometime" He suggested. I smiled and nodded.
"Yeah, it was fun. Thanks again Niall" I wave turning and walking inside. I just basically went on a date with my English teacher. I walked up to my room and unlocked the door. Savannah was sitting on her bed doing homework and listening to music.
"Hey, where have you been?" She asked. I shrugged. For some reason I didn't want her to know. It felt special, like I shouldn't tell people.
"Don't worry about it" I smirked. She rolled her eyes and went back to her homework. We were quiet for a little while until she spoke again. I had started on my homework as well just wanting to get it over with.
"Louis wants to get a tattoo tomorrow after school. I was thinking of getting one as well. Do you want to come with us?" She asked. I thought about it for a moment. My mom would disown me if she ever found out I got a tattoo. But what she doesn't know won't kill her.
"Sure, I kind of wanted a tattoo." I smile. She grins.
"Yeah! This is going to be fun!" We end up singing to some 5 Seconds Of Summer song she downloaded. This girl is getting me into them, damn her. But that thought of Niall and how he took me to a diner wouldn't leave my mind. It's not something a teacher normally does. Should I be worried?
