“The pieces all fit together. Yet everything was falling apart.”
― Nicholas Sparks
The next morning after Harry's mother made us breakfast he took me up to his room.
"Here's your bow" he smiled, handing it to me.
"Why was it in your closet?"
"Well I didn't want my mum coming in here finding it" he chuckled.
"Right" I said and plopped down on his bed. "I think she over fed me."
"She does that a lot. She thinks I don't eat enough just because I'm thin."
I just smiled at him. The way he spoke amazed me while the way he smiled left me in a daze. He was an extraordinary being.
"So what do you have planned for me today?"
"Well a friend of mines has a pool. I want you to come. Can you swim?"
"I've never been in the water" I mumbled, fiddling with the hem of my shirt.
"Really? Well this is gonna be fun."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. We'll go in a few hours. In the meantime, let me show you the beauty of video games."
After a lot of frustration and some laughs Harry's mother took us to his friends house.
"Love, are your parents alright with you being away from home for so long?"
I blinked a few times to try and figure out a lie but I realized that I didn't have to. "Yes, they're fine with it."
Once we were down another street, I started to feel...anxious. Meeting Harry's friends would be different, wouldn't it? They'd act like him and are very close to them so where does that leave me?
We stopped and Harry held my hand to lead me out of the car. Such big machinery for transportation.
"I'll be back early" Harry's mom called through the window.
"Why?" he yelled back.
"There's school tomorrow."
I was slightly amused by the roll of his eyes and the groan the emitted from his throat. We turned and made our way to a large green door. Without knocking or a simple warning, Harry strolled in tugging me along.
"Isn't that impolite?" I whispered, gazing up at him.
"He's my best friend. I practically live here."
A little blonde woman peeked her head around the corner and smiled at us. "Hello Harry and friend."
"Hi" I quietly replied.
"Hi Ms. Stanley."
"Will is right out back in the pool. Go ahead and join him. I'll have snacks out in a bit."
Walking through the smaller house had me smiling. The family seemed lovely and liked the outdoors. My thoughts were interrupted with a loud bang and then a yelling Ms. Stanley.
"Kick the ball in this direction one more time! I dare you!"
Harry chuckled and opened the back door, leading me out. There were much more people than I expected and they all seemed very under dressed.
"I didn't know there'd be so many people. We can go if-"
I didn't want to be the person to drag him away from what he was used to. And if he was used to barely dressed humans laughing and splashing in water then I guess I could get used to it too.
"N-No. I'd like to stay."
He squeezed my hand, "You sure?"
I nodded and forced a smile on my face.
"Harry! Over here!" I snapped my head to see a tall lanky boy with long brown hair make his way over to us.
"This is Volupta. She's my...my girlfriend."
I felt heat on my face as a slow gleeful smile spread on my face. Now that I know what it meant, I'm glad Harry gave me that title and to someone so close to him. Girlfriend.
"Oh.." the boy grinned, scanning his uncomfortably blue eyes down my body, "I'm Will" he greeted, slightly waving at me. I nodded and smiled, "Nice to meet you."
"Get your clothes off and get in the pool. My mum's coming out with food soon."
"Alright" Harry replied.
"Let me get back to Nat and I'll see you in the water?"
When Will was gone I looked up at Harry questioningly. "What does he mean about our clothes."
His eyes slightly widened before he said a curse under his breath, running a hand through his hair. "I forgot about a swim suit. I have one already here but..."
"I don't want to be in the water anyway."
"No no no. I think his sister has an extra one. Follow me."
In the large room Harry held out two pieces of cloth that I wasn't sure would cover anything. "I can't wear that."
"Why not? I think you would look nice" he said with a smile that made me think he was teasing.
"Is there anything else?"
"You're suppose to wear something like this."
"O-okay" I said quietly and fiddled with the hem of my shirt. "Can you stay though because um...this place isn't very familiar."
"Okay, I'll just turn around or something."
I nodded and took off my shirt as soon as his back faced me. Of course I was nervous to be doing this in front of someone that wasn't my mother but I trusted Harry enough so he wouldn't turn around.
I gulped and continued to undress. I slipped on the bottoms and the top, huffing out at the difficulty of this thing.
"You almost done? It's taking you years."
"I'm just having some trouble with the top."
"I would help but I-I'm not sure if-"
"Yes, please help. I can't seem to snap it."
Harry turned and took a step towards me but seemed to stop as his eyes scanned over me. A much less uncomfortable look than his friend. It was more adoringly but it still made me fidget because I was nearly bare.
He blinked a few times as his cheeks turned a red color. "S-sorry. What is it you need help with?"
"The back" I stated, turning around so he'd see it.
"Oh I see."
Then there were dashes of warmth on my skin where he touched. Slightly calloused fingers worked deftly on the task. He then moved my hair back in its place.
"Thank you" I turned around and smiled up at him. "Let's get going yeah?"
Now down at the pool I was tempted to cover myself. I didn't mind when it was just Harry but suddenly --compared to the others-- I felt that my body was being shared. It was unsettling but I sucked it up because this is what Harry wanted and deep down I wanted it too.
Harry had stripped down to his 'swim trunks' and a burning feeling was rising inside of me when I saw all the other girls eyeing him. I didn't like it. Harry said sweet things to me and made me laugh. I couldn't imagine him doing it to anyone else. The thought of it hurt me.
At the edge of the pool I never felt so nervous. "How deep is it?"
"Uh...about eight feet."
"It's not that bad" Harry chuckled. "Here" he said, grabbing me around my waist and pulling me close, "I'll hold you the entire time."
"On three. One. Two-"
And then we were in the water. I wanted to scream because he went on two and not three but I amount of water practically engulfing me prevented me from that. From even breathing. I felt Harry's grip tug at me and then we broke the surface. I rubbed at my face and coughed at the slight burn in my lungs.
"It went up my nose!" I shrieked.
"Forgot to warn you about that." I opened my eyes to see him smiling with damp hair clinging to his face. "It was fun though, right?"
I bit at my lip and nodded, "Maybe a little bit but-" I wiggled my feet and began to panic, "Why can't I touch the ground?"
"I'm the one keeping us floating. I should get a thank you."
I hastily wrapped my arms and legs tightly around him. "Harry!"
"I won't let you go" he murmured into my ear, "Promise."
The day wore on and towards the end of the large gathering I was very tired. Some girls introduced themselves to me and complemented me on the strangest things. Something about my curly hair...
My blue eyes....
I shook my head at the thought. It was dark out and they must've been confused.
Picking up towels and our clothes we met Harry's mother towards the front of the house. She drove us home and knowing she'd be concerned I told her that my parents will be expecting me home in the morning.
Once we were at Harry's home I bathed the smelly chlorine from my body and hair. I slipped back on my clothes and met him in his room.
"So..." I began, sitting at the edge of his bed, "I'm your girlfriend?"
He shyly smiled as he gazed down at his lap. "I was hoping you didn't hear that. I mean, I wanted to ask you first."
"Then ask me."
He smiled and twisted his body so it would face mine. "V, you are possibly the greatest person I've ever met even though you're more than just human. These have been the best two days...ever. I'm so glad you found me even if it was for some kind of faulty mission. You are the goddess of beauty and I really want you to be my girlfriend."
And after the last word was said a tear fell from my eye. A girlfriend could possibly shift to a forever and I couldn't give that to Harry. I was practically born this age while Harry would grow older. I loved Harry but I couldn't let him love me because he needed so much more that I couldn't give him.
To love me he'd have to be like me. And to be like me would be to take him away from his mother, his sister, his friends. I couldn't do that.
"Harry..." I couldn't find the words I needed to say. I wanted shout 'yes' and kiss him until the sun rose but I couldn't. I needed to say what I had to say. To give him what he needed. "What's your favorite thing to do?"
An expression I couldn't read washed over his face as he replied, "W-What?"
"Show me. Something you do that seems so impossible to achieve but you do it anyway."
I..um...I like to sing."
"Really?" I beamed. "Show me. Sing for me."
He lightly smiled. "What would you like me to sing?"
"Anything. The first song that comes to mind."
"Okay." He closed his eyes and began to sing. My mouth gaped at the beautiful voice that flowed from between his rosy lips. It was perfect.
More tears fell as I slowly stood from the bed and grabbed my bow. I listened to the lyrics and bit at my quivering lip as he seemed to speak to me through song. I took the deepest yet shallowest breath I could take.
He couldn't love me. Not the way I love him.
Wait... "You deserve a love that will risk everything for you" I croaked.
He suddenly stopped singing and he opened his eyes to look around the room. "V?"
I raised an eyebrow because...well because I was right here. I was standing right here.
I took a step forward just as he stood up but ...my gods...he just couldn't see me.
"No..." I didn't want that. I didn't want him to never see me again. I wanted him to...to...What did I do?
I saw him run his fingers through his hair as he kept shaking his head. "No no no" he repeated over and over again, breaking me in the process.
I reached up and touched his face but it felt hollow and he didn't even seem fazed by it.
I cried as I stepped away from him. So far away that the portal --that I didn't even know was open-- tripped me into my room. It slowly started to close. I scrambled up and tried to go through it but it blocked me. It kept me away from him. "Please...No!"
I saw Harry drop to the floor in his tears as I did the same. And as the portal was only an inch open, the last thing I heard from him was a strangled cry.
I'm so kidding LOL. I previously was going to end it like that but what kind of person would that make me? A meanie! That's who.
Tell me what you guys thought of this chapter. I was seriously crying as I wrote this.
