I woke up at seven this morning, half an hour later than usual. Fuck, I thought to myself, I'm going to be late and it's only the second day back. If dad found out about how many late slips I had gotten last year, I definitely wouldn't be allowed to Eva's party on Friday. Lucky for me, I perfected his signature and no one has to find out anything. What he doesn't know can't, and won't hurt him.
Even though I only had half an hour to get ready, I still went for a shower. I looked in the mirror and started stripping down my clothes until I was standing in my bra and pants. Then I unclipped my bra, slipped off my pants and went into the bathroom.
I turned the shower water to hot and stood underneath it for a while before washing my hair. My hair clasped to my breast as the water trickled down the plughole and into the drainpipes underground. It always looked darker in the water, nearly black, and I liked it. I liked the mysterious feel to black hair. If only mine wasn't more of a dark auburny-brown colour.
"You have less than thirty minutes to get ready, Lil! School's don't participate well with late students!" dad knocked on the bathroom door.
"Okay!" I shouted back. "I'll be two minutes."
I washed the conditioner out of my hair, shaved, and stepped out onto the bathroom mat. I wrapped a towel around my body and started to blow dry my hair in my bedroom. The heat blasted onto my face with such urgency that it stung.
Deciding to put on make up or not was always a hard decision for me. I wanted to keep my skin free from bacteria, but going outside with a naked face made me feel so insecure that I ended up putting on make up nevertheless. Only foundation, concealer and mascara. I filled in my eyebrows and left my hair in its natural curls, before appearing downstairs to see my dad before I left.
"Good morning, sunshine," he said, kissing my forehead. "How are you?"
"Great, thanks. Are you still okay about letting me go to Eva's on Friday?" I pressed my hands under my chin and pursed my lips.
"Dad, please. Everyone's going," I started getting agitated as he had already said yes. "Seriously, fucking everyone."
"No swearing. I don't like you swearing."
"Of course not, but you will be perfectly happy for you to swear. Nice role model, father."
"Kid, you've got a lot to learn. Pleasing parents isn't easy, and with the way you're heading, it isn't working at all."
I hugged him and left for school. It was a cool October morning, not too frosty, but not warm enough for no jacket.
Arriving at school, I saw the usual groups of girls and guys standing around outside. I met up with a few friends and we sat on a bench to see the boys walk past us, just to check and judge them. There were always this one group that I had never talked to before, they were these four guys, extremely well kept and good looking. I wanted to say something, but the problem with high school nowadays is that you get judged even by what you order for lunch, so I kept my distance.
