Taylor Ayers

‘I will be back as soon as possible.’ I nodded.
‘I just don’t want you to leave. But I know you have to.’ He tucked a strand of my wet hair behind my ear.
‘I will be back before you know it.’
‘Pinky promise?’ I asked. I stuck out my pinky.
‘Pinky promise.’ We linked pinkies and shook on it.

We landed at seven in the evening Ethelburgesa time and the sun was setting making the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen with pinks and oranges everywhere. We were sent to the palace straight away.

‘Taylor!’ It was my father. ‘There is a party in an hour. Go get ready.’ Chris only heard the words party and was excited.

‘Not even five minutes home and invited to a party. I am in.’ He walked off towards the palace. My Dad put an arm around my shoulder as we walked towards the large building before us. The grounds looked slightly less magical than when I had first seen them; The flowers had wilted and died, the leaves had fallen off the trees and everything was looking cold like the weather.

‘So what is this party for?’ I asked as our feet crunched on the gravel.

‘Well Vanessa and I got closer and closer with deeper affections and I asked her to marry me. This is our engagement party.’ I think I had a mini heart attack. Dad had known Vanessa for months and was getting married. I had known Chris for roughly half a year and we were not even thinking about the contract we signed.

‘I feel so sorry for her. She could hardly turn you down.’

‘People think they are coming to a welcome back party.’

‘Were you always this cunning?’ I asked. We were walking up the front steps now.

‘No. Not always.’ He went one way as I went up the stairs towards my rooms.

‘Taylor. Great. Now we were thinking of this gorgeous black and creamy beige coloured dress.’ Mary held up a cream coloured dress, with a black bodice and was quite short for what Jane normally gave me but had this lace maxi skirt but the front was shorter than the back. It was quite short but respectably short. Not like Hannah short.

‘Yeah, whatever. I am game.’

‘JANE DID YOU HEAR THAT? TAYLOR SAID YES!’ Mary bellowed into the next room. Jane hurtled through with a pair of black high heels with butterflies on the heel.

‘Chris asked you to marry him?’ She asked her eyes shining with excitement.

‘No, dipstick.’ Mary hit her on the back of her head. ‘Taylor said yes to the dress.’

‘Oh. My bad.’ She handed me the shoes. ‘Anyway. How are you and ahem Chris?’ I looked up from my phone.

‘What? Oh yeah, we are great.’ They nodded as if to say go on. ‘No. I am not saying anything more. You guys are such gossips. The facts from the royal bedchamber must have a high price.’

‘So you have gone there?’ Jane asked.

‘No! God no. Look just give me the dress and get out.’ Mary gently handed me the dress like it was a baby. I got into the dress and the shoes as Jane bounced back into my room to do my hair.

‘Come on your majesty. We have to get you down to his Lordship.’ I rolled my eyes.

‘You do know he is just like you and me. No, big difference.’ Mary rolled her eyes.

‘We don’t care. Anyway, go get him.’ I slid down the staircase. Chris caught me at the bottom. My father glared at me. I sighed as I walked all the way back up the stairs.

‘Her Majesty the Princess of Ethelburgesa.’ The announcer called. I walked down the stairs with my hand lightly gripping the bannister. Chris took my hand as we walked into the large ballroom which was full of people in expensive clothes.

They all clapped as I walked into the room. I gave them a gracious smile. A waiter walked past with a tray of champagne. Chris got one for me.

‘You do know we have to dance at some point.’ I grinned at him.

‘Can’t be that hard can it?’

‘Taylor!’ I heard being squealed across the room.

‘My least favourite person. Rose!’ I said sounded excited to see her even though I pulled a face at Chris.

‘Taylor! I do want a dance with your scrumptious boyfriend. He has got fabulous arms.’ I  gave her a forced smile.

‘Well I am very sorry but he is all mine.’ Rose was your typical blonde hair girl who gets all the guys and steals them away from people like me. She gave me puppy dog eyes and pouty lips.

‘Pwease. Just one?’ She asked putting her hands together like she was begging with a pout on her thin lips.

‘No. Sorry.’ Chris dragged me out onto the dance floor where many people were dancing. He took one of my hands and put the other on my waist.

‘You put one arm on my shoulder.’ He muttered. I rested a hand gently there.

‘Thank you for saving me from Rose. My most hated primary school enemy.’

‘That is a double negative.’

‘Shut up.’ As the night wore on Chris and I danced more. I ended up resting my head on his shoulder as we swayed in time to the music. When the reporters turned up scouting for a juicy story we left for the grounds.

We lay down on the cool grass even though it was slightly damp from the cold.

‘Nobody will ever remember us.’ Chris said looking at the stars.

‘What do you mean?’

‘Well, six hundred years on and people won’t remember Christopher Castiel Balthazar  Baenziger are they? They will probably going to remember you and her boyfriend who nobody knows.’

‘I will always remember you.’ Chris smiled.

‘Pick a star. Any star. Anywhere in the sky.’ He said waving his hand around in the air. His other hand was holding mine.

‘Okay. That one. The North Star.’

‘Every time we are apart I will know that you are watching me and making sure nothing can go wrong. And in a million years when it dies I will still remember you. Whatever happens to us.’ He took my hand.

‘That is the most adorable thing somebody has ever said to me.’

‘That is why I am here.’

‘I have never been in any relationship with a guy which isn’t friends.’ He dropped my hand and propped himself up.

‘Neither have I. I might look like that guy who always gets the girls, had millions of  friends, loved by everyone and that crap. I am just a normal guy really. The name and the hella lot of land and the most beautiful girl in the world change everything, though. Don’t you say there are more beautiful thing because I beg to differ. The whole world lights up when you smile and I can’t begin to explain how much I love you. It can’t be put into words.’ He helped me to my feet. Once up he closed the space between us and kissed me. I put my arms around his neck and kissed him back. I could hear the expensive firework display going on above us. Lighting up the grounds. I heard a cheer from the front steps which made Chris break off the kiss.

‘I am going to kill your maids some day I swear to god.’ I laughed.

‘Be my guest. You do know you can back out at any time.’ I offered, Chris looked at me like I was crazy.

‘Are you kidding? You are the most beautiful girl in the world I am not giving you up anytime soon.’ I raised an eyebrow at him. ‘Ever.’ He leaned down to kiss me again. ‘My Taylor.’

‘My Chris.’ Chris and I spent the rest of the evening dancing and drinking champagne to celebrate Dad and Vanessa’s engagement. I bet thousands of photos were taken and sent to publishers for large sums of money but hey it is the life of royalty.

Her majesty is off the market. Young Lord Baenziger has snapped her up fast. We assume the restaurant incident was a fluke. No baby. Her majesty went for a walk alone in the gardens. When the fireworks went off announcing His Majestys engagement two figures were embraced on the front lawn. The two had been dancing in a crazy dance together for sometime before this latest installment in their relationship. More on this new couple page 5. What was she wearing page 6. ‘Seriously? I thought we were very obvious unless they are all blind.’ I muttered folding up the paper. Chris smiled. He had given me the paper. I think he had forgotten to go to bed as Jane found him sleeping on the floor of my sitting room.

‘Yeah. Sorry about crashing around here.’

‘No problem. Anyway. I doubt that anyone will know.’ My father stormed into the room  looking like thunder. Chris was sat on my bed beside me. I was still in my dress from last night under the covers. He was in a rumpled shirt, trousers and blazer and his tie loosely around his neck. Chris moved more towards the edge.

‘Taylor. I have heard from the large rumor mill that this palace is, that Mr Baenziger did not go to his own room last night. Is that so?’ Chris moved to make a quick getaway. ‘No you are staying.’ He said. His cold eyes never leaving mine.

‘Well I could say that I know what you are on about but that is lying and I cannot lie to the king.’

‘Taylor, just answer me.’ He growled.

‘Ask Chris. I woke up and he was coming into my room.’ His eyes flicked to Chris.

‘Alrighty then. Christopher why were you in my daughters rooms last night?’ His voice was calm and a calm father is a scary thing. But being chewed out by your girlfriends father who happens to be the king must be bloody terrifying.

‘Well I just remember saying goodnight to Taylor and then going to sleep. I can’t remember anything. I promise. I swear on my life I never did anything.’ My fathers gaze softened.

‘Well make sure it never happened. I have now got to go and head off the horde of  reporters who saw you leave together. And god forbid the ones that bugged your room.’

‘Okay. I am going to get changed so everyone can you please leave. Thank you.’ They walked out chatting about the new jet coming over from America. I actually don’t know why I still live here. I mean it would look weird if I suddenly left but then I wanted to stay for as long as possible. I wanted to go to university. Getting into Cambridge could not be too hard with my free pass but then I had until christmas to start panicking. Chris had already taken his A levels and GCSEs or the equivalent so he had nothing to worry about.

Once dressed I walked out onto my very large balcony which ran across my four rooms. Chris was sat on the patio beneath me. He had a cup of something steaming and reading a book. There was a climbing rose climbing across my balcony which was strong enough for me to climb. I was in jeans and a t-shirt despite the chilly winds. I started climbing down the roses avoiding the thorns. When Phoenix walked out onto the patio and sat beside him and took his hand I started climbing back up to my balcony. I could hear every word they were saying.

‘Are you okay?’ She asked.
‘Not really. I am worried.’ Chris replied.

‘Why? Come on you can tell me.’ She prompted.

‘I just can’t deal with the stress of everything right now. I mean I love Taylor but then there is the small issue about being a princess, and the press, and everything else. It is so hard.’ I heard the sound of the wooden chairs on stone.

‘I don’t know what to say-’ She was broken off by a new voice. Hannah. How the hell?

‘You should have fallen in love with someone like me. I mean there are no strings attached to this.’ She said. I could hear her shoes clicking against the patio.

‘No thanks.’ Chris said pushing his chair back slightly with a screech of metal scraping against stone.

‘Come on you know that Taylor is a stuck up brat who gets what she wants. I mean she has this place’ I glanced over the edge. Hannah was sat in Chris’s lap.

‘If Taylor was a stuck up brat then I would be very worried.’ Phoenix commented.

‘She has such an ugly face. Her ginger hair is so ugh. Horrible. Why does she not dye it? I would if I had hair anything like hers. Her nose and boobs are too small. I could go- Ow!’ Chris had pushed her off his lap.

‘I think Taylor is perfect. She is smart, witty and keeps me on my toes. I can see why you are jealous. I just can’t keep up with the fact that I fell in love with one of the most influential teenagers in the world. The press won’t leave her alone yes but then that is a small price to pay. I broke the guidelines I grew up with for her. I made my whole world come crashing down because she changed it so much. I chose her and would do over and over again. Do you want to know why? Because she thinks she is noone special and gives most of her time to others. Being a perfect role model for people all over the world. You know what got this country through the period of time when the Genera was in charge? Taylor. She may not look much but she is a beacon of hope. When she was locked in a high security prison nobody gave up hope in her because she is strong.’

‘It is okay Christopher she has brainwashed you.’

‘No. She hasn’t brainwashed me We can’t go out and do anything nice or what she wants to do because of the press always on her back. Imagine going out and having your photo taken all the time. It is insane. She can’t go out without looking smart. Even a game of lazer tag in the woods is harder than it used to be. She is such a strong person who deserves so much more than me who has a messed up life.’ He moved away leaving Hannah and Phoenix alone.

‘I do think she has a large nose. Really unattractive.’ Hannah commented.

‘I think she has her flaws as we all do have but Christopher sees her differently to everyone else. She is perfect and means the world to him. She does loads of things for other people and never gets a thank you or a grateful smile. Her father hardly ever has time for her nowadays because of politics.’

‘Well I think she gets enough attention anyway.’

‘How do you get there? What has she done to you for you to be so annoyed at her?’ Phoenix snapped. A knock on my door brought me away from their conversation.

It was Chris.

Jane opened the door as Chris walked in I walked out. He caught my arm.

‘Hey wait. Where are you going?’

‘What is wrong?’ There was concern in his voice.

‘Nothing. Only you should not have a conversation about someone below their rooms. Sound carries well.’ I pulled my arm free and walked down towards the library. Because the staircase spiralled I caught a glimpse of Chris. He was leaning against the wall with his eyes closed and his hands in his hair.
