The dreaded school term where many secrets were spread about
I looked around the large house for one last time. Because General Mosebush was out of power my grandmother had claimed the throne back and I could go where ever I liked. Two was carrying the bags out to the car. My grandmother had sent over Jane and Mary to look after me as I went back to England. They giggled a lot more often and especially whenever Two got out of the swimming pool after we had been racing. Mark was to drive us to the airport and from there we would take the jet back to England. It could withstand a nuclear blast from only a mile below it. With state of the art technology it was almost impossible to get lost or hijacked.
We turned into the airport and straight onto the runway after being sent through grandmothers private customs. Mark opened the boot and handed the bags to Two as Mary and Jane helped me out and handed me my sun glasses. I smiled in thanks and walked onto the plane. It was brand new and so I was on it’s first flight as a royal jet. It had a light theme of creams and pale yellows. Two sat in a seat by the window and immediately shut his eyes. Mary and Jane walked into the sleeping compartment and gossiped together.
Once the wheels touched down in England Two untensed.
‘Good that’s over.’ He said clapping his hands together and standing up. I had to stop a laugh which threatened to spill past my lips.
‘You are scared of heights?’
‘You are scared of small spaces.’ I squirmed in my seat.
‘Mother shut me in the smallest room in the house only it was the airing cupboard. It was always just before Dad came home that I was let out and told to act natural.’ Two took my hand.
‘Well she was not really normal was she?’ I shook my head.
‘Not really. Looking back she did many things that weren’t right.’ Two looked down at our linked hands and abruptly dropped mine.
‘Sorry. I- I will go and help Mark with the bags.’ He walked off. The back of his neck was pinker than normal. He had quite tanned skin from living in Ethelburgesa where the weather is always warm in summer and so hardly ever went more than pink. I smiled to myself. Two was different than when I first met him. He just to be cold and calculating about everything. Overthinking every small move but now he was more carefree. Jane sidled up to me.
‘You are good for him.’ She said watching Two as he moved the bags. I slapped her arm gently.
‘Yeah. I have known him for ages and he has never shown so much emotion or even held someones hand. There is more between you than you both want to admit. I can see it.’ She had a half smile on her face as she looked at me. I twisted the ends of my hair together.
‘I can’t be involved with someone. I have no choice in what happens to me; Who I marry and what I do when I am older. Hell I never even chose my GCSE’s. Dad picked them for me.’ The limos horn honked. I walked down the steps like Jane had taught me with my sunglasses over my eyes. I walked across the shimmering tarmac towards the now white limo. Grandmother has a white limo for summer and a black one for winter. Why not just have one? Makes life so much more simpler. I mean what classifies Summer and what if it was spring or autumn? I just give up with her crazy ideas. Back to the moment.
Don’t drive through a small town where everyone knows who you are in a limo with a royal crest and and escort. Not a smooth move.
All the school buses were pulling into William James as Mark pulled up. I got out as Two opened the door for me. I smiled at him. I wore sunglasses whenever in public as Jane thought it would give me an air of mystery and it annoyed the paparazzi whenever they were lurking because they couldn’t tell if it was me or not if I was alone.
I walked up the drive towards the school. Two was carrying my bag as normal. I walked along with Mark pulling away back to wherever he goes when I am school. Two smiled at me and then became stoney and impassive as I walked along the corridor towards my tutor. I took off my glasses as Phoenix bounded up to me.
‘HEYYY!’ She yelled at me waving her arms. Louis and Hugh walked around the corner with a very disgruntled Three. Louis glanced at me when he dropped off his bag. Three sneered at Two.
‘So. The legendary Lord Two is back with us. Screw the princess while you were away?’ I glanced up at Two: His jaw was clenched and he did not look very friendly. ‘Or did you find out that your family is alive and you are not a Lord anymore?’ Two was not the same ever since that episode with Shinji. That had really shaken him up. Phoenix smiled at me oblivious to the tension in the air.
‘Soooo,’ She drew out the so to make it longer. ‘What did you do over the holidays?’ I tapped my nose.
‘Secret. Oh yeah, Two they have opened a new White Tomato on the main street, could you run down and get me a hot chocolate for lunch?’ He nodded. I passed him the tenner my grandmother gave me. I went on tip toe and whispered in his ear. ‘Get something for yourself as well.’ He nodded and walked away. Three saw the opportunity to taunt me as I was alone.
‘So. Two has finally got back to England.’ I gave Three a smile.
‘Well seeing as there is an arrest warrant for both you and Louis for holding me at gunpoint, I would stay here if I was you. Home is different than what you remember. You can’t get away with many things anymore.’ Three cracked an evil grin. I used to think he was a nice guy with blonde hair and blue eyes but now he was malicious with a twisted mind. I had never questioned how he trained me. Looking back Two was constantly watching me more when he was training Louis than me.
‘Oh. I know very different. So different nothing seems the same anymore. Everything will change someday. I will be watching from a nice place.’ I took a step back and trod on Phoenix’s feet. I stupidly turned my back to Three to apologise.
‘I am so sor-’ Threes fist came out of nowhere towards me. I grabbed it and twisted it. I heard a sickening crack as his wrist snapped. Louis stupidly drew out his gun. Hugh grabbed Phoenix’s arm and dragged her away. Everybody else in the corridor where crowding around us but at a safe distance.
‘Are you trying me Louis?’ He nodded nervously not meeting my eyes. There was a commotion at the back of the crowd. Someone was pushing through. Louis glanced over to the movement. I grinned at the memory of training where Two was drilling into my head of “Rule number one of training. Never ever take your eyes away from your opponent.” I had not taken him seriously but now I knew why. Louis was distracted the gun was not held as tightly as he normally held it. I hit his hand down towards the floor.
‘Wha-?’ I punched him in the mouth to shut him up. He tried to retaliate but I just slammed my fist into his mouth again. There was now blood coming from his mouth. There was a nasty cut from the royal ring on his lip.
‘Where did we go wrong?’ He asked. His teeth were red from the blood on his lip.
‘When you decided to become cold hearted and sell me out.’ Louis’s eyes widened.
‘I am so sorry. Can we be friends again.’ I looked him up and down. Louis was never cut out to fight. He was weak and could not even get in a good punch when we were training in the Easter holidays. Probably why Three wanted to teach me more. Out do Two, but no Two gets in there first.
‘I will think about it.’ And with that I turned and walked away towards Two who was stood at the front of the crowd. He had been pushing through the half of the school who had turned up. I walked back and picked up Louis’s gun. ‘And little boys should not be playing with guns.’ I lobbed it to Two who caught it one handed. He smiled at me.
I got many stares that day. Great. I come back from the holidays and I am already being stared and whispered at because I beat up one of my best friends. I did feel bad for Louis; He used to be top of the boys in our year only now he is pushing at the middle of the pack.
Once the third lesson was over Two grabbed my bag and walked me towards History. Lucy caught up with me.
‘So Taylor. How was your holiday?’ She winked at me.
‘What?’ I asked sounding stupid.
‘You had your baby.’
‘Wait what?’ She linked arms with me.
‘You and Mr Number over here had a beautiful baby.’ I wrenched my arm away from hers.
‘Well you should not believe petty rumors. I have not even had a baby.’ I stalked off leaving a very confused Lucy behind. Two caught up with me.
‘What was that about.’
‘I am always in the public eye and now I have a non existent baby which never existed. Why am I always picked out?’
‘Because you are that fabulous and really likeable. I just said that out loud didn’t I?’
‘Wait. What did you just say?’
‘Yeah I did.’ You are saying wait what a lot right now. Are you feeling okay?’ He stopped walking and placed a cool hand on my forehead. I grabbed his hand and pulled it away from my head.
‘You said I am likeable.’
‘No I did not.’ He kept walking but the back of his neck was slightly pinker than normal. I ran the conversation through my head and came to a decision.
‘Yes you did!’ I called out and I ran after him. Mr Strong saw me running.
‘Don’t run Taylor.’ He said absently as I passed. I slowed down to a walk.
‘Sorry sir.’ I said quickly. Once he was gone I kept running towards Two. I caught up with him.
‘Seriously. I am not that stupid. I know you said likeable.’ Two kept walking.
‘No I didn’t. You are imagining it.’ He was more like the guy I first knew when we met for the first time in the grounds running from the General. He was not telling me something. But that would mean… No he could not we are just friends. But then there was that moment when he told me tense my stomach last term and there was some kind of electricity between us. I stopped walking and pondered on the facts rushing around my brain. I finally came to the conclusion.
Two liked me.
