The dawn of a new terror
My father woke me up the next day at ten.
‘We have a garden party to go to. Remember?’ I shook my head. My father had obviously noticed my red eyes and ignored them. My dad went through a lot with me and yet we always worked through it together. Because that is what family is for; Working through the hard things and staying together.
‘I forgot sorry.’
‘Nothing to be sorry about. I don’t really want to go anyway. But Lord Whatshisface and his sons are putting it on. And we must be there.’ I looked up at my father. He was in a cream suit with a white shirt and no tie. His hair was messed up and curly like always and his blue eyes were concerned.
‘I’ll be down in a hour.’ He nodded and walked out.
I wandered over to my wardrobe debating on what to wear when Mary and Jane bounced into the room.
‘Taylor!’ Jane cried out. She flung herself at me in an effort to cheer me up.
‘Hi.’ Mary tutted.
‘What has her majesty said about saying hi?’
‘Hello peasants.’ I said. Mary rolled her eyes while Jane snickered.
‘That is a lost cause.’ I laughed but I never really meant it.
‘The dress, the dress.’ Jane chirped excitedly as she fluttered around my room like a bird. They pulled a brand new dress out of the bodybag Mary had in her arms. It had thin straps that went over my shoulders. It was loose fitting and had a black belt at the waist. The skirt flared out just a little. It fell to just above my knees. Jane grabbed a box which contained shoes. They were white ballet flats with a small bow at the front. Now I can’t complain that I like to dress up and look pretty but seriously dressing up like this just for a garden party is insane. It is a Saturday for petes sake. And I get a new dress every party we have. It drives me crazy. There are people out in Africa who have no food and bad housing and my grandmother is spending money on a new dress for me. And then out came my crown again. I swear I wear that thing for everything. I mean it is pretty but I hate wearing it. It just gets tangled up in my hair. Jane pulled all my hair into a side braid and then placed my crown on top. They took a step back to look at me.
‘Perfect. Now go get ‘em girl.’ I smiled.
Father and I got into the limo and drove to Chastleton. It was a large stately home owned by the Bardozers. It was a long ride and I spent most of the time texting Chris and staring out of the window.
We pulled into the drive to have a man open the door for us and yell to the whole garden:
‘THEIR MAJESTIES THE PRINCE OF ETHELBURGESA AND HIS DAUGHTER THE PRINCESS OF ETHELBURGESA!’ There was a large green maze down one end of the garden with many green animals made out of hedges around the garden. There were loads of adults on the large patio by a long table full of nibbles. There were some men in black but not as many as there were at the palace. My father lead me down the steps towards where everyone was milling around. He pushed me in the direction of the teenagers. They were all stood there in white suits holding cans of something. There were some girls who instantly descended on me.
‘So. You are a princess?’ This girl was blonde with white highlights. She had tanned skin and bright blue eyes.
‘Excuse me. But who are you?’
‘Lady Emilia Quart. Everyone knows who you are. That princess who ran away from a contract.’
‘I did not run away from a contract. I was going to be shot.’ I trailed off realising I had no weapon. If Chris found out he would kill me.
‘What? What is wrong?’ This girl also had blonde hair with dark roots meaning she had dyed it.
‘I forgot my- um- thingy.’ The girls looked among each other.
‘Whats a thingy?’ Emilia asked.
‘A gun.’ I said bluntly.
‘Girls should not know how to use one of them.’ Emilia persisted. I looked around for Chris but with a pang remembered that he was gone.
‘Damnnit. I need to go and find something hang on.’ I walked up to Uncle Barney.
‘Do you have a spare gun?’ I asked. He nodded and handed over the black revolver. I took it and pushed it under the belt of my dress. I glanced towards the door and did a double take. Chris was there. He stood next to his father. A loud voice announced them.
‘LORD BAENZIGER WITH HIS WIFE AND THREE SONS!’ Chris caught sight of me. He gave me a half wave. I raised a hand in greeting. He walked over to me with Shinji and Takeshi. He hugged me close. I put my arms around his waist.
‘Why did you not tell me?’ I whispered.
‘Because I am on the next flight out after this is over. I persuaded father to let me come.’ He whispered back. ‘Do you have a gun? Akki took mine away saying I was going to hurt her babies.’
‘Akki?’ I asked.
‘Right. I do have a gun.’ He held out his hand. All the girls were looking at us in excitement. It was not everyday that you see a princess hug a lord after all. And this one was hot and had lovely eyes. I pulled out the gun and handed it to him. Their eyes widened when I got out the gun. Chris took out the magazine to check the amount of bullets. He counted them and slotted them back into the gun.
‘I’m good. Neither am I leaving your side until I have to fly back.’ All the girls sighed.
‘Thanks. Wait what do I call you? Are you still my bodyguard?’ Chris thought it over.
‘Just call me Two.’ I nodded.
He held my hand and never let go. Even when the guns started going off in the maze. Uncle Barney drew his gun and ran to find my father. All the girls, men, women and boys started running around screaming. I glanced up at Two who shrugged.
‘I am going to get you out of here if it is the last thing I do.’ Two and I ran away from the gunshots and towards a wall.‘Do you have anything electrical?’ He asked. I pulled out my phone and ipod. He grabbed them and shoved them into a polythene bag that he had in his pocket. He put his phone in as well.
‘What are you doing?’ Emilia asked. Chris ignored her.
‘In a second I am going to push you into the swimming pool under this wall. I will follow you. Do you trust me?’ I nodded too scared to speak. He pushed me over the wall still holding my hand.
He let go on the way down. I landed in the water. A second splash told me Chris had landed beside me. I came to the surface to see it Chris and all the girls. They were “drowning” and calling out for Chris to help them. He ignored them and swam over to me.
‘Are you alright?’ He asked worried. I nodded.
‘Yeah. Yeah I am fine.’ I swam over to the edge and pulled myself out. He followed suit. I went to pull my hair out and have it to hang down my back but he stopped me.
‘You still have your crown on. It is tangled up. I’ll sort it out for you.’ He deftly pulled my hair apart and got out my crown. My dress was soaked and completely ruined.
‘Where is my phone?’ He pulled out the bag which was still airtight. I sighed in relief. We walked towards the back gate where we would walk to the front. He held my hand all the way. Just before we walked around the last corner he pulled me back. I looked up at his face which was dead serious.
‘I will be back as soon as possible.’ I nodded.
‘I just don’t want you to leave. But I know you have to.’ He tucked a strand of my wet hair behind my ear.
‘I will be back before you know it.’
‘Pinky promise?’ I asked. I stuck out my pinky.
‘Pinky promise.’ We linked pinkies and shook on it. He gave me back my phone and ipod and then pushed me around the corner. He followed a little way behind.
